e OMAHA DAILY BEE--MONDAY ULY 7 1884, b SPORTING EVENTS. The { Chicago VRessrvns Meot 4 Second Defeat at the Hands of the Union Pacifics, Duffy Wins the 100 Yard Race With McCombs of Council Bluffs, Smith Pitted Against Hailey at Des Moines for $250 a Side. Cocking Mains—The Whereabouts of Pugilist Fell. Base Ball, About, twelve hundred people witnessed Saturday’s game between the Chicago Reserves and the home team. The game though interesting up o the seventh in. nings was not exciting and barring a wild pitch by Rockwell, a wild throw by Santry, and a poor throw by Rockwell to first was one of the finest exhibitions of tho national game ever in Omaha. The spectators who in former games have always beon partial to the home nine laid aside their prejudice for the Omaha club and applauded a fine play by the visitors tho samo a3 ono made by their favorites, The home nine won the toss and the first innings reeulted in a whitowash for both teams. In the first half of the second innings Whitney made a fine drive to right field for one base, stole second, made third on Bryd's hit to first base and crossed the home platoon a passed ball by Young. There was no more run- getting until the seventh innings, when Hillery made a fine drive into conter field for one base, made second on a passed ball by Bandle, and came home on Kane's two bagger toright field. Kane crossed fthe home plate by stealing third and a poor throw by Rockwell to firat. This concluded the run getting for the visitors. The home nine scored one more this inuings and four moro in the one following, In the third innings Lee, the pitcher for the Chicago’s was attacked by a hem- morhage from his throat and the box was filled for the remainder of the game by Carr the right fielder, Loe retiring to the out field. Below is the score: UNION PACIFIOS. * | where stakes were twenty-five dollars a side and the distance seventy-five yards, The race was won by Gibson by two and one. half feet. Time eight seconds, Yestorday's Main, On Saturday afternoon in a much fre, quented room on} Douglas street, the lovers of game towls were given a treat in the way of a cocking main between a couple of local birds, Ono was a black- breasted, owned by a well-known fancier of this city, and the second was & white pile owned by a workman in the U, P, shops. The main wes fought for ten dollars a side, and after a long fight was won by the dark-colored bird, ending in the death of the white pilo cock. Yeaterday afterncon the black-breested red was again brought out by his owner this time for a conflict with a silver- gray, the property of the owner of the white pilo in the conflict of the day be- fore. The dark fowl, although laboring under the effect of its previous battle, showed its superior powers, and ended the fight by breaking the leg of the pale bird. Several bird fanciers in this city have of late been turning their attentions to rearing fighting birds, and some good cocks have been the result. The dark- breasted red, tho winner of tho two maina just fought, is a bird brought from Wau- kegan, Wisconsin, some time azo, and is looked upon us one of the best fighting birda in the west. Thoe Das Moines Glove Fight, On next Saturday night an entertain- ment a la Sullivan will take place at the Grand Skating rink in Des Moines be- tween O. I1, Smith, the Chicago puglisit, of this city, and Mike Hailey, who train- ed Fell, and was his second in his fight with Hanloy, The fight is to bo with soft gloves, Marquis of Queensbury rules. the stakes $260 a side, Smith's backer being John Comack, a large grocor in lowa's cipital city. Smith contracts to knock out his antagonist in four rounds or forfeit his stake money and the re- coipts of the house. The fight will come off in one of the largest halls in the city and will take place on a stage erccted for that purpose twenty-four feet squore, Quite a number of Omaha and Council Blutfs sporting men now intend to be present and a; more than ordinary glove fight is looked for. The Whereabours of Fell, James Fell, the prize fighter whom the Saunders county authorities were not destrous of taking from the mines in Missouri and bringing back to answer to the indictment for prize-fighting, is now of Nebraska's governcr cannot reach him, Soveral weeks ago he laid aside his pick and shovel and started for Canada where he now is. He has been traveling the provinces giving exhibitions in the =man- Iy art and his bills one of which was sent to this city a shor! time ago displays tho the requisition name of his vanquished, prominent amorg which are those of O. Wild pitche: Lo 1, Rockwell 1, Unmpire—Bran¢ The Daffy -McOomb Race. About three hundred people, princi- pally members of the sporting fraternity of this city and Council Bluffs, went out to the cricket park yosterday afternoon to see the 100 yard running race between P. M. Dufly, of this city, and Archie McCombs, of San Francisco. This race which had been on the to- pis side, nedy, proprictor of for soveral weeks was for $250 a Duffy was backed by Hiram Ken- one of the club rooms iu this city and McCombs, it is eaid, by Tom Bowman of the Blufls, A beautiful track 100 yards long was stepped off on the west side of the To or grounds, running north and south, keep the sprinters from interfering fouling one another in the race two small ropes, about two feet apart and decor- ated with flags, were stretched from goal to goal. The toss up for side was won by Dutly who took the east stretch, James Madden, of the Blufls, and Pat Ford, of this city, were ohosen judges, who elected Jack Morrison as referee. The start agreed upon was a scoring one and one half hour was given to get a send off in that way, and could it not be made in that time the men were to ‘‘go” by pistol report, At about half-past four the men appeared in running suits and took their respective positions at the north end of the stretch. After scoring about ten minutes they finally crossed the soratch together and the word was given to go. At the end of the first fifty feet yards the men were breast and breast, but Duffy seemed to be runuing easy, while M- Combs appeared to be doing his best. Dafly near the middle of the stretch made a spurt and kept the lead to the end, crossing the string two and a half feet ahead of McCombs and winning the race. Time, ten seconds. Taking it all in all this was remarkable time as the wind was blowing a strong gale from the south. For some time before the race took place pools were sold in which McCombs was slightly the favorite. Beside the five hun- dred putup by thebackers, about five hun- dred more changed hands in pools and side bets, and the money was handed over to the winners without a murmur as it was conceded that Duffy had won the race in the fairest manner, Dauffy, the winner, is a professional rupner. He has lived in Omaha about one year and came her from one of the interior towns of Michigan, and is now a member of? the John M, Thurston hose company. He has been pitted against some of the best sprinters in America, among whom were McQuigan, of Boston, and Stone and Kittleman, runners known to every sporting man in the West, McCombe also procures his substance by his fleetness of foot and has won seve ral races from noted runners. On the geventh of last June he ran a race against Reed, in Salt Lake City, for a thousand dollars and won the race easy, Aftor the Duffy-McComb race another took place between Sidney Peet, of Oma- ba, and Gibson, of the Bluffs, The The Chicago Reserve nine, which has been under engagement to play the Hasting's club on its grounds, the first threo days of the week has canceled its conuract and entered into an agreoment to play three more games with the Union Pacifics, This afternoon these two clubs will again cross bats. Salisbuiy will fill tho pitcher’s box for the home tcam and Lee for the visitors, A good game is looked for and willgbe called at 4:30 p. m. An Abortive Attempt, A stranger in the city, and a guest of the Metropolitan hotel, was attacked on Seventeenth, between Capitol avenue and Davenport streot, Saturday evening, by acouple of ruflians, who attempted to rob him. To stiflo his cries they tried to geg him, but assistance came to him and the highwuymen fled. The stranger seemed perfectly bewildered and dazed, and wes unable for some time to talk rationally about the incident. At length ho related it, and gave the name of his hotel, when a good Samaritan put him in the streot car and paid his fare, He arrived at his hotel safcly, but has not since ventured out after dusk.
