Railways—Firmer, Stocks—Market opened comparatively firm for some shares; shade lower for others, A® the first call a weaker tone prevailed, owing to the sharp decline in Vanderbilt's shares, which broke & for Lake Shore, 2§ for New York Central, and 1} for Canada Southern. These stocks were unfavorably affected by re- ports; the Lake Shore earnings for the quar- ter were equal only to § of 1 per cent on capital stock, and consequeutly no dividend will bo declared. Speculation was also ad- versely influenced by reports that the paper of & well-known railway capitalist had gone to protest. In the afternoon there was a rally of $@3, but in final sales, lowost prices of the day were generally obtained, while the Cen- tral Paclfic rose to 40}, and Missouri Pacific to91§. Compared with last night’s closing prices aro 38 lower for Lake Shore, 2 Rock Tsland, 2§ Quincy, 2 New York Central, 1§ Northwest, 13 Union Pacific, and 3@1 for the remainder of the list, except Readiog and Wabash preferred, which were 3@§ higher.
