The streets are wide, regularly lsid out, and well paved with stone, which has been made to take the place of wooden sidewalks and pave- mont, since the yellow fever scourge; since then, too, the city government has made every effurt to etfect perfect sower- age and cleanlness in the streots,and haa #pparently succeeded weoll in tho wnder- taking. The postoffice is a dark, dingy looking building both within and with- out; a new hotel, nearly completed, & very handseme. Thero are a great many fine busincss blocks, cotton exchange, chamber ¢f commerce, lange elevators, and numerous handsome churches. The residencos on the avenues leading out Irom the business portion of the city are large and attractive, surrounded by green fawns end extensive grounds.
