Jane 14, SUBSORIPTION RATES, 20 nonts per week «" . $10.00 per yoar By Carrler By Mail OFFICE: No. 7 Pear] Stroet, Near Broadway. et MINOR MENTION. See J. Reiter's Spring Goods. Oity council to-night, if a quorum can be had. The Bavarian band goes to Papillon on the Fourth, 1t doesn’t look as if Council Bluffs was to have much of a Fourth of July cele: bration. B. R. Scott's black mare either strayed away or was stolon from his barn Thurs- day night. David Tostevin has been adjudged in- sanoand taken to tho asylum at Mt. Pleasant. The last matrimonial permit issued is to Detlef J. H. Kroll and Mary Reiter, both of Council Bluffs, Justice Abbott was yesterday busy hearing the tedious evidence of doctors in a glandered horse case. H. H. Horno & Co. have engaged the services of Mr. Frank P. Whitney, who now travels on tho road for this firm. Business in Council Bluffs is by no means at a standstill, Yestorday H. E. Seaman handled about 38,000 pounds of paper. In tho district court yestorday the case of Wells Cook vs. the Equitable Insur- ance Company of the United States was still on trial, Judge Aylesworth has been having his residence supplied with water pipes and all the needed conveniences, both for cold and hot water. The heavy rain early yesterday morn- " SLEEPY SEATON, He Gets Acquafnted Witha Man Who Robs Him of His Roll, A fow days agoa young man named Seaton, whose father is sheriff of Linn county, and whose home is in Marion, Towa, arrived hore searching for a man who is wanted there, young Seaton sorving in the capacity of deputy sheriff, After spending some time herein looking for pointers, and interviewing the police, he took the dummy train and went across the river to hunt there. While sitting in the Union Pacific depot waiting for a train he fell in conversation with a very pleasant wsort of a gentloman who seemed very courteous and free-hearted, and who furnished a treat of bananas, and they ((-Mm_l and chatted until pretty well acquainted. Young Seaton had been up for two or three nights, travelling, and was pretty well tirol’f out, and soon dropped into a doze. When he awoke, his companion had_disappeared, and also his pocket book containing between $40 and $50, —— Refrigerators and ico chests at bottom Ww. 8. prices. Homer & Co., 23 Main street, at in Politics, Evrron Bee:—I notice by tho oty papers that a Blaine and Logan Club has recently been organized in this city, at the “Ogden Houso parlors,” and after the usual spread eagle spocches, by-laws wero adopted fixing the initiation feo at 85 head—provided one is accepted as number, wo suppose! This, it seems to me, is something new in ropublicanism. It looks very much as if the object of theso plug hat and silk stocking fellows was to have a club com- posed of only a select fow—of men who are too fine haired to asscciate with the mass of the peoplo—those who cast the bulk of the republican vote, and without whose support the party would be doomed to suro defeat. They aro evidontly new hands in the president making business, Barrett & Oo's Great Railroad Shows, We clip the following notice from the columns of one of our exchanges in ref erence to the big Barrett show, which will exhibit on Friday, July 4, at Council Bluffa: “Undonbtedly the finest show that ever exhibited under canvas in this city visited us on Wednesday last and gave two unparalleled performances. Every- thing was new, sparkling and vivacious, oontrasting so much with the one recently here that the people were jubilant with excitement and joy. “‘The stock was the finest we have ev- er reen with a traveling circus, and it is impossible to exaggerate in speaking o ita merits, in 8o far as their claims ex- tend, for they fulfil every promise made in their paper, which is more than can be said of any circus company visiting the south since the war. Ihe performance throughout is as fine as could be wished, the clowns (ten in number) are very fun- ny, and each and every employe does his part with the precision of a well disci- plined soldier; and every patron is treat- ed as a gentleman.among gentlemen.” Such a_hearty indorsement as the above leads us to infer that we aro going to have a good show this time. | —m— Attend the auction cigar sale, Where to Spend Your Evenings, “Should young men spend thoir even- ings loitering around the street corners telling stories, ete.” “No.” “Should they visit the saloons aud gambling dens in search of amusement, orto listen to the music from such places?” “No.” ““What should they do then, will you please answer?” “They should seek somo place where they can be benefited physically, mentally, morally and spiritually.” “‘In there any place in our city where they can do that!” “Yes.” “Where is it?” ‘At the Youfg Men's Christian Association, No. 12 North Main Street.” “May anyone go there!” * Thoy may.” ** Would I be welcome there ?” *‘You would ; and, more than that, you will find some one there to greet you and to and might with profit take a few lersons from some older but less officious republi- cans, There are enough republican working- men in the city to organize a large club and it should be done at once. Lot every man who wishes to support the republi- can ticket bo admitted, bo he black or ing washed away a part of the south wall of the foundation of the residence of D, M. Connell the undertaker. There was another racket at Boekem- per’s saloon yesterday, and John Mogan and P, M. Brady were arrested but soon aftersettled thomatter and were released. A. T. Flickinger, who is probably the only man in the city keeping a rain gauge, found by measurement that the white, and with a_plenty of campaign speeches and good mansgement the ro- sult of the election in November will be gratifying to overy repnblican and will surprise tho plug hat politician. At the meeting of the grand grove of Druids of Ottumwa, this week, W. R. ‘Vaughan was unanimously chosen as noble grand arch of the state, There are now 48 groves in the state, and a mem- bership of nearly 2,000 members, There was no opposition to Vaughn, and he went to the front with a good deal of en- thusiasm, W Gates. was arrestod twice Thursday on complaint of his wife, who claimed that he was threatening her life, and raising rows at home, all of which Gates denied, Ho claimed that all his wife and mother-in-law wanted was to get him out of the way while they run off some of his property, a buggy and other availables, No one appeared agalust him yesterday morning and he was released, rather cor- roborating his statement that they only wanted him locked up so that they could do as they pleased. 1t is reported that Mr. David Mottaz has decided to soon resign his position as custodian of the ity jail.
