The whole system ought to be abandoned until a good one can be secured. The Council Bluffs Herald, while not denying that nearly all ita *‘telegraph” reports came in the form of plates ship- ped by express would fain make the pub- lic believe it all comes over the wire, Its telegraph editor should drop his saw and plane long enough to explain how the outs which appear in its ‘‘telegraph” are sent by the United press over the wires, The case of Mrs, O'Rourke sgainst the city, for damages on account of slipping and falling on the sidewalk in front of the Empkie building on Main street, was to have been tried at this term of court, but has been continued, it being under- stood that the ocouncil would allow her something without s 1t is claimed by some, that there is enough evidence to be had by the city to show that she was not entitled to any damages, Tuk Beg, in showing up the bills of Justice Vaughan, made one or two typo- graphical errors which the evening pa- pers, in their eagnerness to gobble the artiole, failed to notice. His bill was cut down to $197, instead of $97. Juatioe Schurg's bill for the same period was about $100, and Justice Abbott's about the same. The papers whioh gobbled Tox Bre's news will please make the correction also. Complaint is again made of the old man conductor on the street car. Foster, Council Blffus, Send for price list, FAMILY FUSSING, Due Cause, A lively little racket is reported as having occurred at one of the asmaller hotels of the city, the chief participants of which were a husband and wife who were boarding there. The affalr has been smothered as much as possible, but as nearly ao the facts can be learned it appears that the husband has been strug- gling slong in a business venture here, while his wife has been retatning s position in & store in St. Louis and sending him what she could save from her earnings to help him to make the businces hero a succees, A day or two ago she came here to sce him, and to learn the prospects for making this their By some chauce she found in his grip some letters iu feminine hand writing other than her own, and which indicated to her that love rather than business had been commanding his atten- tion and money. The Monday Mnrnlnz Grist of Poller Business. A trio of young men, Jim Murphy, John Tracy and L. C. Taylor were before the bar yesterday morning, having been arrested, for a row at Kate Herbert's place on lower Main strest. The ovi- dence was decidedly muddled, and indi- cated that moet of the participants in the Saturday night rumpus were in a similar As near as could be learned one fellow struck another, and there was talk about Taylor drawing a knife, but there appeared no one whocould tell who was to blame, and the judge discharged the prisoners. Jim Hughes failed to appear to answer to a charge of heing drunk, and his se- curity was declared forfeited. F.'E Baruey, charged with disturbing the peace of the lower hotel, was dircharged. The fellow who made such a bellow about having been robbed at Ida Story’s house, and who was himself charged with g drunk and disturbing the pence did not appear in court yesterday morn- ing and his bail was forfeited. Probably on getting sobered he concluded that he had made a fool of himself and did not care to have anything more done in the matter. A fellow named Vanness was fined $10 for having a rumpus at Ida Story’s house, Frank Stevens arrested for insulting condition, Mrs. G. Haller was discharged, John Biack for slapping & boy Adol- phus Kaaner, waa fined $3 and_ conta. ikl LOSING TIME. Mrs, Davis Complains of Another Watch being Sneaked from Her. Mra. Davis, who keeps a second-hand store on Upper Broadway, seems to have much trouble from thieves. On decora- tion day some fellow snatched a diamond ring while being shown some goods. Yesterday & young man named C. M. Hollingsworth, who had borrowed some money of her, was there paying the interest, which proved to be at the rate of 120 per cent. a year or 8o, one dollar a monthon $10, and after paying up, was looking at some watches. ~After he had gone out, Mrs. Davis missed a gold watch, valued at $35, and getting Officer Morse hunted the young man up and arrested him. The young man de- nied taking the watch, but offered to pa; the price of it rather than be nrelwdy saying it would hurt his business more than that amount. He wanted the offi- cer to go with him and see about ralsing the money, but the officer told him *‘that isn't buumen, and took him over to stand trial. On examination Mrs. Davis wad pos. itive that the watch was there when he came in, and that it was missing when he went out. The young man denied taking it, and explained his proposed settlement by the fear of an arrest hurt- ing his business. It appeared that he had been here about eight months, can- vmlnu for orders for enlarging pictures "Xhotngnphl, and that he had borne ugo character. He was discharged, the judge remarking that it was one of the most puzzling cases hehad been called on to decide for many a day, and he glva the prisoner the benefit of his oubt. —— OOMMEROIAL, COUNOIL BLUFFS MARKET, Wllu':—Nn 1 milling, 75@80; Nox 3 65@ et Eooal purposes, 10245, orn— urposes, Onta—For losal purpases, $5@40, Hly —810 oo@uoo per ton, iR o per 100 pounds, Wood—Good supply; prices at yards, 6 00@ 700, Uuu—seuvmcx hard, 1150 per ton; soft, Lard—Fairbank's, Tholesaling at 0.
