A Large Number of New Buildings Now Being Erected, The building boom in Omaha this sea- son promises to be larger than for many years previous, Not alone in building will large sums of money be expended. Many thousands of dollars have already ‘been spent and many more will follow in grading down and filling up lots, which has been made necessary by the grading of the streets, A number of the architects were vis- ited yesterday to ascertain about how mapy new buildings would erected and Ly whom. One of the most exciting games of ball ever played in Omaha was witnessed yes- terday afternoon at the U, P. grounds by about 500 people, the Rock Islands of Rock Island and the Union Pacifics being the contestants. A close contest had been looked for, and the spectators were not disappointed. No one conld name the victors until the third man had been put out, closing the ninth inning. The game opened with the Paciffcs at the bat. McKelyy on a hit and an error of short-stop reached first. Bandlo touched tho first bag also on an error, McKolvy reaching third. 1t now looked as if the Union Pacifies might at least save a whitewash, but Funkhouser and Carroll were fielded out and Mec Kelvy was caught between bases, thus putting the side out. For the Rock Islands, Walsh and Cavanaugh scored in this inning, getting until the fifth inning when, with McKelvy on third and Bandle on second, and after two strikes had been called, Funkhouser made a magnificent drive to centor field fora life bringing in the men on bases. Whitney then hit the ball to the lefi field fence, Funk- houser reaching third, Carroll then made a three-bagger, Funkhouser and Whitney ecoring. Carroll reached home on Dwyer's fo hit, who was lcft on base by Gag- ins’ catch of Rockwell’s fly to right field. The Rock Islands scored another run in the sixth, and four more in the seventh innings. In the eighth the Union Pacifics, by McKelvy’s three baser, were credited with two runs by Dwyor and Bryan, who each reached baso on single safo hits. In this innings the Rock Islands were unable to score, thus making the game at this stage atie. In the ninth Funkhouser was given a life by a passed ball by Cavanaugh, and was brought home by singles of Whitney and Dwyer, who failed to score. None ot the Rock Islands in this innings were able to cross the home plate, the Union Pacifics thus winning the game. The contest, interesting from the be- ginning, was interspersed with many inexcusable errors aud an occasional bril- Mant play. Rockwell was in fine form and pitched a great game, retiring no less than nine Rock Islanders on strikes. Hudson, for his team did equally as well putting out the same number. An unpleasant incident of yestorday’s gomo was tho hissing and ‘‘kicking” againat the umpire. The managers should 8eo to it that this disagreeable feature hereafter be omitted and if persisted in these indulging in it should be summarily ejected from the ground.
