Grote had his house broken into a fow days ago and 810 taken. Yesterday another attempt was made to secure some plunder there, but none was obtained. The park policeman has received or- dors to arrest everybody lying down in the park at night. The stocks yards here now give only capacity for thirteen cars, while they used to accommodate 24 cars, The Y. M. C. A. of this city, is plan- ning with the association of Omaha for an excursion to Glenwood at an early date. Jacob Harb has bought out the inter- est of Jacob Schmidt in the barber shop, in which both have heretofore been in- terosted. Mr. Covalt, the guardian of Bayliss park, has already gathered 300 pounds of maple seed which he has sold at five cents a pound. The city was full of sewerage contract- ors yes! , it being the time for clos- ing the bids ‘on the work to bo done by the city thid season. The rece ‘wf the city clerk's office for May were about $5,000, of which $450 was from criminal cases, the rest from saloon licenses, eto. Charles E. Taylor, one of the engi- neers at the transfer, has captured a fel- on, and has it imprisoned on his big toe. Charles now has a graceful limp. There were seventeen extra policemen put on duty last month, costing the city $95. This was malnly on account of the races and of special raids on tramps. The hose for the W. R. Vaughan team arrived yesterday, and the boys are busy practicing, expecting to start in good trim for the tournament next Monday. The Rescue steamer was out practicing a little yesterday, and getting limbered up. It threw a pretty fair stream, but not such a stream as the water whrks can throw. ‘There were only two cows in the pound yestorday and no dogs. The enthusiasm about enforcing the ordinances seoms to be dying out, like the fever of working tramps on the stone-pile. Sixth avenue is in about as bad shape asitcould be. It has been filled in patches, so that it is almost impossible to get over it even with a light buggy and especially at night it is dangerous, % 5 When thespollesiéaart finished up Ita ulws,hl& M:l}ory], whotwul formrlg' with Monday i el 610 A sinql b 0 u&n;m mr lomont company, has re- ner was lott in tho city jail, tho first urned s city, and purposes opening time tho juil has beon empty in six week & branch here of the fur hat manufactory e Biod: Bitldg: ap. The company would like to accommedate all and start up all the lighta, but it can at present only use the two new dynamos, the third dynamos ha%ng boen injured in the fire, That is now being tested and the nuisance muet be adjusted and the dynamos put in per- fect order before it can be used; hence the delay of a part of the lights. Mayor Carey, of Des Moines, who is grand noble, order of the Grand Grove of Druids, writes to Mayor Vaughan who, holds the second chair, that on account of the firemen’s tournament at Des Moines ho will be unable to attend the meeting of the Grand Grove in Ottumwa next week and Mr. Vaughan will have to pre- side in his place. Mayor Carey closes with ““We will take good care of the W. R. V. hose team in Des Moines."” Tt cost the city $69 for meals furnished the prisoners in May. The bill for feed generally runs between $10 and $15, but this unusual increase is due to the tramps which have been run in during the past month, Financially it doesn’t pay to run these tramps in, and possibly it doesn’t pay in any respect. They are run in, given a night's lodging, a meal or two, and then they are turned loose, with full stomachs and rested legs, ready to continue their idle wanderings. ‘Wm, Davy, on behalf of the Ballast Co., of which he is the senior member, has sent a petition in equity to Judge Loofbourow, to enjoin Mr. D. Tedder from selling liquor in Hastings, alleging that said saloon is a damage to his busi- ness in demoralizing his force of men, thereby preventing him from filling his contract with the C. B, & Q. R. R,, he having given a bond of $5,000 for the prompt performance of his contract. The petition will have a hearing next Tuesday.—Hastings Chronicle. There 1s quite a clamor for a fountain in Bayliss Park. The fountain is already ordered by the city under the contract wich the water-works company and lo- o und, cated by the old council which made the contract. An effort is being made to got two or threo other fountains with the view of having one of them located in Bayliss Park, where there surely ought tobe one. Five of the new fountains cost $100 each. And the other one which is to be located in front of the Masonic Temple cost $350. The fountains will be useful as well as ornamental, as they far- nish water for drinking purposes for man and beast, The fellow Johnson who snatched $200 of an Indianan named Donnelly, on the outgoing 0. The Union Pacific Not So Much In a Hurry as 1t Was, While the Union Pacific wes trying to induce the city council to grant several years time in which to pay for the paving Jf the street car track owned by the U. P. company, the promise was made that in & few hours of the perfecting of the agreement the new rails and stringers would bo landed hero. The city was as- sured that the old track would be taken up at once, and thatthere would be no delay to the other paving, as by a few hours notico the company would keep ahead of the paving. The company does not seem to be in much of a hurry now that tho ¥ has made the desired agroement. It was eaid on Saturday that a car load of new rails was already loaded in Omaha, and that the wait was for some stringers, Yesterday the contractora m_ul the alderman were anxiously waiting still for any indications that the U. P. com pany waa about to commence work. The contractors are at work now on that portion of Main street where the track is, and there is need of all that promised haste on the part of the com pany. If the promises made are not bet- ter kept than the company’s promises in regard to Union avenue and the dummy trains, it will be a long wait. porbfint =t PERSONALL 8 B. A number of young bloods were brought to front yesterday for dis- turbfng the p oo Sunday night. There was a gang of them who in coming from the boer garden broke i upon the stilly night with attempts at winging, cat calls and other hurrah actions and they wholly fgnored the warnings of Officer Brooks. As a result Frank Cloud, William Swal- len, Long Dave Hentz, and Beauregard Miller were fined $9.20 each. John Ma- her was discharged for although he was in the party yet there seemed no evidence that he took any active part. S Good-Bye, Old Landmark! Yestorday the workmen commenced tearing down the old frame building next to Neumayer's hotel on Broadway, This building was one of the old landmarks. It was put up in 1851, and was for years known as Beebe's hall, thus named after the builder, and it was here that many who are now greyhaired, and are ranked among the old citizens, indulged in merry dances in their youngerglays. Here it was that the first thu‘mfilows were given in Council Blufls, When it was built tho town, as it then stood, was all east of it, that building being then considered on the wegtern side of the city. The old building h len sadly into decay, and for several yeats has been anold yookery. It is now to be replaced by a fine brick building, to be put up by lra Platner, and to be occupied by the grocery house of Parks & Platner, ——— The City Wallet, The following report of the city auditor was prosonted at the meeting of the city council last night: 70 the honorable mayor and city couneil of Counci Bluffs: - GrntLEMEN:—1 herewith sub. it the following report* of clt.y warrants is- sued during the month of May, 1854, also the total amounts paid out by order of the present council to May 8lst: General fund Police fund, Grand totals, ~ $7,904.79 §18.
