The stolen acls hmwll saw him in the store, and saw him run out. If thieves are to be allowed to escape thus easily, the city will be overrun with them. [If Michaels Bros. have another and heavier robbery they should not complain or find fault not caught. The girls of the sewing school and industrial society connected with the church entertained and —_—e——————=| woro entertained at the church parlors Congregational Saturday afternoon, the pupils who numbered about thirty. The entertainment was very creditable and at its close they were served with rofreshments, candies, cake, lemonade, ote. All seemed to enjoy it muchly. A number of articles made by the girls were offered for sale from a little booth very prettily decorated. Theso articles consisted of sweeping caps, aprons, hold- ors, ete., and they met with ready sale, The ladies having this schoolin charge are doing a nobls work, as they not only help these young girls but help them in such a way a8 to make them more inde- pendent, better fitted for the duties cf Strawborries retailed at & number of |life and more able to help themselves. stores on Saturday for fifteen cents per quart, and two for twenty-five. R. has a new banner, it being handsomely finished in black and gold on a back- ground of blue silk. The post has also presented itself with a new national flag. James Donehoe, H. Hammer, John Smith, S. Sampson and —— Evens are invited to appear in police court this morning to answer the charge of being drunk. The LeFleurs, who bothered Council Bluffs so long with their [quarrelings and drunks, have been ordered out of Platts- mouth, whither they went from here. They are a hard couple, The C. B. & Q. is to build a handsome new depot at Shenandoah this summer. It is to be hoped that the ‘‘Q.” will not forget that Council Bluffs is in need too. The rickety old shell now called a depot | ; is a disgrace to both the road and the city. The police made 175 arrests during May, a larger number than in sny month in the city’s history, but many of these were fellows found sleeping in box cars and vagrants who were driven in by flocks and let out about as soon as ar- rested. The board of trade meets in regular session this evening. There should be a fall attendance. If the members of the board would only turn out to these meet- ings and take hold in earnest much more might be accomplished for the good of the city. The attendance at the opera house Saturday night at *‘Otto,a German,” was not very large. The play was somewhat superior to those which are generally put on the boards here, but there have been s0 many poor shows that the public has lost confidence. A mad dog caused excitement at Hen- derson, It bit two other dogs, one be. longing to Mr, Damell and one belonging to Mr. Baungarten, and a steer belonging to Carter. The bitten animals have been tied up, and the original mad dog was chased nearly to Maocedonia, where it was overtaken in the woods and killed. P, ciation need chairs, table, stands, pic- tures, books, parlor ornaments, ete., and At the Congregational church yestor- day morning, the pastor, Rev. Cyrus Hawlin, preached an unusually strong and interesting sermon, in the course of which he touched up the city council for its proposed ovasion of law. It is well- known that the city council is contem- plating the passing of ordinances to ovade the prohibitory law, and to make a prac- tically licenso system in this city, despite the law of the state to the contrary. The council, too, has been trying to evade the state law in other matters, such as the paving of the street car track, etc. This attempt of officials to evade law caused the speaker to tell some very plain truths, and to comment sharply on the low grade of moral life thus indicated. A community which will sit thus quietly by and permit those who are chosen to exe- cute law, and who are sworn to obey law, needs some shaking up. As all know, Mr. Hawlin is honest and fearless in giving his opinions, and it would have caused the city officials to do a little thinking at least, if they had heard him yesterday. ———— PERSONAL. This is the first observ- anco of the day at this place since the 30th day of May became a national holi- day. The attendance was moderately fair and the weather fair. The old flag was raised at half mast over the postoffice block, and people generally seemed to appreciate the significance of the occa- sion. The greater part of the business houses were closed from 10 a. m. until 2 p. m. in honor of the day. At half past ten o’clock the procession formed at the opera house and marched to the fair grounds where a very appro- propriate servico was held consisting of singing, prayer s.d orations by each of our ministers, reading the muster roll of the dead heroes from this vicinity, and short addresses by veterans who survived the mighty contest of '61 and 65, Miss Girty Baird recited the poem, ‘‘The Blue and Gray” in a very happy and entertain- ing manner which reflected great credit upon the young declaimer. After the services of the post was over at the fair grounds a special detail of the post re- paired to the cemetery and thero dis- charged the sad but pleasant duty of strowing spring's rarest blossoms on the graves of our noble heroes who so willing- ly gave their lives that we might enjoy the blessings of a free and untrammeHled people. Peace to their ashes and hon- ored be their names. Day before yesterday the railroad com- missioners of this state, and the super- intendents of the C. B. & Q. and Wa. bash railroads met here to confer with our citizens in regard to putting upa union depot at the crossing of the two observed roads, at this place. Our citizens, as a majority, are in favor of the depot being erected, and much was said pro and con on both sides of the question. But as to what the honorable gentlemen will do in the premises remains to be seen in the dim distant future. We feel like the old maid who was on the hunt of a husband when she exclaimed,;*‘ Anything, O Lord, will do!” Yes, anything will suit us so that it will brace up this dull monotony of the dullest season that ever struck our part of the world, The muchly independent farmer is busy in his broad acres and tilleth dili- gently from morn till night, and hence our streets reminds one of Goldsmith's “‘Deserted Village.” But we are perfect- ly thankful that it is so, for in an abund- ant_harvest this fall we see a new boom inall branches of business. Crops of all kinds are in a highly pros- perous condition and fruit bids fair to be an abundant crop. I think I am safe in uglng that nothing short of a cyclone or a hail storm will cause a failure in crops (‘flnull kinds in this part of the state this all. The political pot has not got very hot here yet, but from the rumblings and mutterings that can be heard from center to circumference it bids fair to be a red- hot campaign this fall and all of our citi- zens have their eyes and ears turned Chicagoward and are anxiously awaiting with bated breath the mighty edict that shall go out from the great republican wigwam proclaiming the next president that is to be.
