A special meeting of the city council is to be held at 11 o’clock this forenoon, the hour being set to accommodate Geo. Mec- Mahon, who has another engagement this eyening. Justice seems to have at least one eye shut sometimes. Yesterday one fellow, for stealing an overcoat, was sent to the penitentiary for a year and a half, and another one, for attempted rape, was fined $20. A number of shade trees are being cut down. Persons anticipating the slaught- or of trees along the curbing especially, should remember the trees go a long way toward beautifying the city. The Boston Operatic Minstrels ought to return to Boston and stay there, that is if they belong there, which is very doubtful. The show proved a slim one, with but few redeeming features. Tur Beg is under obligations to J. F Barke for a series of his photographic views of the interior of the opera-house, which are excellent, giving a faithful re- presentation of the house, the stage, galleries, eto. The most important decision rendered was to begin missionary work in Africa, and ex pend there this year £50,000. Mr. Le- men, on last Friday, presented the cause of the Home of the Friendless, of this city, in the interest of which he attended the meetings. The sherifl from Ida’Grove expected to ship back the mortgaged team and wagon last evening, but the property has been replevined by the woman who had been deterted by her husband, having secured legal advico. Much sympathy is ex- prossed for her, and in view of the value of the property, it secms as if some ar- rangement could be made by which she should save enough out of it to enable her to her friends in Kansas George Holmes has taken hold of the case, and it is hoped that he may suc- protecting and helping the woman, althongh her husband merits no sympathy at all. reach ceed in When John Johnson, colored, was be ing sentenced in the district court yester- day, one of the court attendants thought he saw a diamond glisten under the curly hair of the prisoner., He informed Jail- or Schontz and when the fellow was taken down in the jail to serve his ten days an_examination revealed a loose ncalo hanging from the negro's scalp, which had, while in the court room, re- flected the sun in such a manner as to deceivo the attendant. Mr. Regan naturally foels sore about the trouble which is brewing about the paving of the street car line. Until the matter is settled he cannot go on with his contract. Many of his expenses keep on. He brought on from Washington, D. C., expert pavers, paying their expon- ses and guaranteeing them $4 a day dur- ing tho season. Now, in the very bost sort of weather, he will be obliged to be idle unless the matter is adjusted at once, On decoration day, Friday, each of the public schools in the city will join in exercisos to be held in Bayliss park at o'clock in the morning, the exer- cinos to consist of music, readings, etc., and will then decorate with flowers a large cross, which will then bo presented to the G. Theo- dore Bockman proved the good Samar- itan, and attended to the little fellow until the boy was brought to. Jailor Schontz has seventeen boarders now at his mansion, but four of theso will in a tow days take trip to Fort Madi- son. Clifford Hough would like to go probably, but will be compelled to remain in jail five months longer on the sentence by the federal court and tho thirty days ho received yesterday from the district court, before he can begin his two yoars’ sentence to the fort. Jailor Holloway, of Plattsmoutk, was in the city yesterday. To-Day's Programme, The attendance at the races yestercay was larger than on the opening day. The track was in excellent condition and all things seemed to work together for good to those who love turf sport. The first event of the afternoon was the half mile dash for the Bluff City cup stake, tor two-year-olds. In the pools Celsus was the favorite, selling for £10 in The horses which started Howard Arnett, Wm, Ills.; Irish Lass, Denver; Alameda, a 817 pool. were as follows: H. Arnett, Sharon, Holly & Carlile, Eugene Leigh, Minneapolis, Minn,; Ad- venture, L. W. Benson, Maquoin, I1L.; Guydett, M. Nusbaum & Co., Maryville, Mo.; Kentucky Bill, Wm. Boyd, Hills dale, lowa. Jense J., entered by Jesso Crall, of Atchison, Ka., was drawn, The starters were placed as follows : Kentucky Bill, Alameda, Guydell, Howard Arnett, Celsus, Irish Lass, Adventure. Tho same judges, starters, and timers sorved as on the day before, with the ad- dition of Colonel Sapp. Colonel Abbott served as marshal, and as on the day betore, did eflicient service in that capa- city. '{'huru was the usual delay in getting off, without which a running race wouldn’t be a running race, but finally the horses got the drumtap, and away they sped, with Trish Lass in the lead and Celsus close upon her. They kept pretty well together, the others bunched close be- hind, It was a lively dash, but Irish Lass was evidently too speedy, and camo under the wire the winner, her rider not touching her with the whip. Celaus was lapping her, but only by much urging. Alameda came in third. Time, 50§. Mr. Haley, one of the winners. was present to receive thefelogant silver cnp. Besides this was the $15 entrance with $150 added by the association, The wecond took $50, and the third saved stakes. The others in the race came in as fol- lows: Guydotte fourth; Adventure fifth, Kentucky Bill sixth, Howsrd Arnett was left at the post. The second event of the afternoon was the § mile dash, put in place of the special pacing race on the programme, The starters as placed were as follows : ‘‘St. Paul,” Robert Deacon, St. Paul, Minn.; “Lena.” Holly & Carhle, Den- ver; ‘‘Beeswing,” S. C. Ball, Macedonia, Lowa; *‘Roxella,” Wier Bros., Maquoin, IL; “Niphon,” R. Jervis, Le Mara, Lowa; *‘La Belle N.,” Eugene Leigh, Minneapolis, Minn, ; *“Titus,” S. 1. Wil- liams, Comanche, Iowa. In the pools La Belle N. was selling at §5 to the field’s $6 and $7. It was aslow and tedious start. Ni- phon led from the start, and kept the lead to the finish, the horses being pretty well bunched. The race was rather slow, the finish being a little lively, however. Niphon won; La Belle N., second, and St. Paul, third Time, 1:03. The third event was the hotel stake, a threo-quarter mile dash, for three-year- olds, vhe first taking the $15 entrance with $150 added, the second $50 and the third saving stake. The starters drew places as follows: *“Woodie Hugens,” Gray & Co, Mary- viile, Mo, ;*Lady Tompkins,” L, C. Ball, Macedonia, Iowa; *‘Vircoln,” M. Nus- baum, Maryville, Jarilla,” John Soden, Yale, Kan.; ‘“‘Fletch Taylor,” W. J. Scoles, Muberly, Mo.; ‘‘Jim Shelby,” Holly & Carlile, Denver; ‘“‘Anna H,” Weis Bros., Maquoin, Tl ; “Emma H,” Harvey Pickerel, York, Neb. The pool selling cn this race was rather feeble, Lady Tompkins being rather the favorite, but not very strongly so. The race was a bunched one, and on account of the huddle there was some poor riding, Flotch Taylor took and kept the lead, winning the race in 1:18; Jim Shelly second, and Lady Tompkins third. The rider of Lady Tompkins claimed a foul of the winner, but it was disallow- ed, The closing race of the day was for the Omaha stake and more interest was taken in it than any other of the day’s programme. It was for all ages, tho = winner taking $10 entrance with $100 | a: added, the second money being $30, and [* the third saving stake. It was a dash of 1} miles. Tae starters named as placed wel Clla Rowe't,” S. E. Butcher, Cam- anche, lowa, “Prix,” L. W. Benson, Maquon, Il ; ““Veron” Joe Van Bus- kirk, Shenandoah, Iowa; *“Black Prince’ Harvey Pickerel, York, Neb.; ““Aliunde,” Gray & Co., Maryville, Mo, In tho pools there was lively bidding, with Aliunde as first chance, Trix for second, The field selling slow. There was a good start, and on pass- ing under the wire the first time Vernon was in thelead and Ella Rowett close upon him. Aliunda came up’well though and soon got his nose ahead, and held the lead, widening gradually the gap between and Trix, who was neck and neck much of the time with Ella Rowett for second place. Aliunde passed under the wire the winner by two lengths, Trix second, Ella Rowett third, Black Prince fourth, and Vernon fifth, The mile was made in 1:443, and the mlleand a quarter in 2:13, This closed the day's sport.
