Why It Was Necessary to Drop An Iron Sate{From theFourth Floor, From the New York Herald, A singular accident necessitated the fall of an iron safe, weighing two tons and a half, which was being hoisted to the fourth floor of No. 30 Broadway, esterday afternoon, from the sidewalk {onnu(h. The safe had reached the de- sired hight, and an idle crowd stood in the street below watching with interest the motions of a workman who stood on the sill of the fourth floor window in an office used by the freight department of Now York Central Railroad Company. It was in this room that the safe was be placed, and the workman on the window ledge was altornately pulling and push- ing tho safo, giving it a slow, swaying motion, so that the safe might be swung over the window sill and lowered into the room. Suddenly the workman on the window Ernst Sanger was his name—gave a piercing and agonized shriek that startled all who heard it, and arrested the foot- steps even of the busy merchants and brokers who had not troubled themselves to look at anything so commonplace as a safe hoisting feat. A single glance at the writhing form of the workman was enough to show what had happened. Sanger had taken hold of the pulley to swing the safo, and his fingers had caught in the rope and been drawn into the sheaves of the block. His fellow-workman under- stood the situation at a glance. They knew that to turn the winch, either to hoist or to lower the safe, might result in crushing the poor fellow’s hand to a pulp. There was only one thing to do—the rope must bo cut and the safe allowcd to drop to the sidewalk. As quickly as possible the sidewalks on I)dll%’l sides of the street and the road- way also were cleared of pedestrians and and vehicles. Two stout fellows lay out upon _the sill and held the body of their suffering comrade so that he would not be carried down with the safe. Then the ropes were quickly severcd close to the block. Sanger’s hand was releazed and ho was drawn half fainting into the room and car.icd to a surgeon’s, The biz safe crashcd through the side- walk, smashing a heavy flagstone into powder , and buried itse!f in the earthy floor of a vault under the street. Be- yond having its bottom bent in, the safe was uninjured. Sanger's hurts, though painful, are not dangerous. | — Horsford's Acid Phosphate, in Constipation, Dr. J. N. Repinson, Medina, O., says: “In cases of indigestion, constipation and nervous prostration, its results are happy.’ —— Rooster Gallantry. Vallejo (Cal.) Times, A lady in this city hearing an unusual commotion in her poultry yard the other morning ran out and saw three roosters making frantic efforts to extricate a hen that had got her head fastened between the boards of a fence in an attempt to fly over it, while about twenty old hens were walking and feeding about the yard a8 unconcernedly as if nothing unusual was going on, The action of the roosters may be explained by the proverbial gal- lantry of the sex, while the hens were probably taking quite a delight in seein7 the belle of the flock and a hated rival effectually strangled. ‘ e — POZZONI'S MEDICATED COMPLEXION POWDER. Mr. Van Wyck has made sereral moves since he has been in the senate, for the benefit not only of his own immediate constituents, but the citizens of the northwest, and this proposition he now offers may meet with much opposition from certain quarters, but it s in the interest of the people, and they will sustain him, We trust that other bills may follow in its wake that will confine the land to actual settlers. For one thing, ho has been astonish the army by ordering a series of exchanges of sta- tions between regiments in the east and regiments in the west, Ho believes that for their mutual good, and for the good of the services exchanges of stations should be more frequent. An exchange means a great deal to the regiments con- cerned. One has been perhaps ten years at some eastern post—Fort McHenty, Baltimore, for example. It hes taken root. Suddenly, often with very little warning, it must go out in the Indian country to resume routine life under totally different conditions. At the same time a regiment which has been a fixture for a decade in New Mexico or Montana comes into civiliza- tion again. It is often quite as disagrec- able for the Western regiment to come East as it is for the Eastern Regiment to go west. “‘Why, sir,” said an old army officer to night, *“If the regiment at Fo Blank, Dakota, were ordered East t day it would bankrupt every oflicer in its roster. Lvery one of them has some local scheme for mauking money—a farm or a mine or a herd of cattle, or some- thing that they could not give up with- out great loss, From time imemorial army officers have always done a little monoy-making as they went along out on the plains, Take Dodgo City, Kansas. That is built on a town site purchased by an army surgeon from a_squatter for a few hundred dollars, and afterward sold by the army surgeon for more than $50,- 000. That’s one of numerous cases Most of those officers who have been long in the west, whers they have any shrewdness at all, have some money laid up against retirement day. e — riles Pilos are froquently procoded by a sonse of weight in the back, loins and lower part of the abdomen, causin 3,0 l:utinm. to suppose he has some affection of the kidneys or neighboring organs, At times, sym toms of indigestion are present, as flatuency, uneasiness of the stomach, efe.
