As usual in this tribunal the fiest day was spent in calling the law One hundred and eighty-five cases were called, quite a number of which were marked for trial at this term, To.day District Attorney Lambertson will have the grand jury impaneled and instructed by the court. There are now three persons imprisoned whose cases are awaiting investigation by this jury; Sie- ve.tes, recently bound over by Commis- sioner Anderson for using the mails with intent to defraud; Vannie Hare charged with embezzling a registered letter from the mails at Nemaha city, and the deputy postmaster at Ainsworth, charged with the same offense as Hare. Other mat- ters where the parties interested are not under arrost will also be brought before the grand jury. Judge Brewer, of Kan- sas, the newly appointed circuit court judge arrived in the city last evening and will sit with Judge Dundy this morning. THE STATE DISTRICT COURT, Yesterday was the day appointed by Judge Wakely for hearing the argumenr. of counsel on the application of James Fox for an order restraining the buard of public works from performing their sup osed functions, and Hugh Murphy & Co., from carrying out its contract with the city, Mr. Cowin, Fox's attorney, was ready to go on with the argument. but Mr. Connell, the city attorney, said others might§wish to be made parties de- fendant, on account of which he wished more time. yThe case was continued until next Monday by consent, the judge making an order that all papers of de- fendant should be filed by Thursday morning. COUNTY COURT, This morning the dooket for the May term of the county court will be called. The present term is a light one, there be- mg only twenty-three cases to be dispos- of. THE POLICE COURT. A complaint was lodged in the police court by Officer Sullivan against A. J. Simpson and M. M. Marshall for keep- ing and maintaming nuisances, James Creighton, chairman of the board of pub- lic works, filed against C. W Stevens for obstructing the street without first having obtained permission to do so. Peter Tattle, failing to appear when hia case was called, hisi bond of $100 was forfeit- ed. A complaint also was filed against Hans Young for keeping a disorderly house. ) — NEATLY DONE. Mr. Hill Relieved of $120 on a Street Oar by a Couple of Mis- taken Strangers. A gentleman named Hill, whoze first name could not be learned, drew $120 out of the First National bank on last Saturday afternoon. After drawing his money he started up Farnam and had gone scarcely a block when a gentleman came running up to him and told him some one inapassing street car wascalling him, Hill said he thought not, but the siranger affirmed there was, Hill ran afier the car and jumping on the rear platform was accosted by a couple of men who asked him if were not Mr. Jones. When he said he was not, the strangers said they must be mistaken and crowding past him jumpped off the car. Mr. Hill then proceeded to the county treasnrer’s office to pay his taxes and was surprised to find his purse and' money gone. The incident with the stranger flashed upon his mind in an instant and told him where his money had gone, e Army Orders, Recruit Joseph R. He seemed to grow worse, and being out of money it was thought best to take him to the county poor house. e was taken out on last Friday evening, and died within an hour and a half after his arrival there. It was thought by those who at- tended him he died of heart disease. From papers found upon his person it was learned his namoe was Oharles M Lee, laborer from Florance cut-off, He was buried on Saturday afternoon, and his parents, who live in Mazeppa, Tenn, notified of his death, It is also thought he has some children living 1n Minnesota somewhere. For some reason not as yet known it is thought he came to his death by violence or unlawful means. To appease theiwr demands Coroner Kent has determined to hold an inquest, It was to have been held last evening, but from some reason was postpoued.
