The saloon ordinance was so well en- forced in Clinton last Sunday that “‘scores of thirsty individuals were de- prived of their customary back-door nips.” J. R. Van Meter’s large flouring mill, at Van Meter, Dallas county, was under- mined by the freshet on Saturday and fell with a crash. The building contained 1,00C bushels of wheat. Marshal Morris, of LeMars, arrested two Swedes on Monday, and_recovered between $600 to $700 worth of property, stolen from the Richards house. One of the men was an employe of the house. Shortland Harris, who keeps a drug store in Mason City, has been convicted of violating the liquor law. His plan was to let customers help themselves to whis- ky and then pay for it by buying a cigar at double price. The revival meetings in the First Me- thodist Episcopal church in Keokuk lasted eleven weeks. The church gathered in about twenty-five new members. There were fifty conversions, but many of those joined other churches. Two Catholic priests of Des Moines, Rev. J. F. Brazll, of St. Ambrose church, and Rev. M. Nugeni, of St. Michael’s church, are assailing each other anonymously through the press of that city, relative to whether or not St. Patrick banished the enakes from Ireland. The Iowa democratic delegation to the Chicago convention has secured the reading-room of the Palmer nouse, on the oflice floor, for headquarters. The Dubuque Herald, in reporting this fact, says Towa is the only state that has boen ablo to obtain headquarters on the office floor.
