Tho case of Philip Reagen, arrested for mayhem, will not be heard until next Saturday before Justice Schurz. Thomas Nelson was arrested yestorday for kicking up a Sunday row in Jansen's saloon, on Broadway, and thumping A. Johnson. A young man named Fred Oaks, who has beon housekeeper for J. At 7 o'clock last evening the river had risen fifteen feot, ten feet of the rise being within the last twolve hours. It has covered Gumbo point and has filled Tack channel. Tack channel was ‘made by the great rise of 1881, The board of education has decided that during the coming year the supplies ahall be purchased by the appropriate committoes, This will relieve Pettibone of the dutios of purchasing agent and card contractor, and be a relief to the people also. A Missouri valley merchant tailor in a flaming advertisement in Bob Harris’ paper announces that he gives bettor fits than any tobe had in Omaha, Sioux City or Chicago. He does not include Council Bluffs for he knows that Smith & Teller ave located here. W. D. Thomas, a well known resident of this city, has returned aftor a yea's absence, looking after tho intorests of the Union Consolidated Mining company. He brought back some specimens of ore which are declared to be very fine, and they must be assayed at once. Tho Milwaukee and St. Paul company is making many improvements between here and Neola, stone being laid 30 as to protect the embankments, and new oul- verts, ote., are being put in—in fact, overything possible being done to protect against flood or rush of waters. Alvin Joslyn's company has come and gone. The band which is advertieed so greatly is very attructively uniformed and made nlore noise than twelve men can ordinarly. Davis showed up some elegant diamonds over which he seemed to feel prouder than even over his show, and well may he. The senate committee on judicial dis- tricts roported Saturday i» favor of hold- ing adjourned terms of the circuit court at Avoca. This report was adopted when there was not a full committee present. All the absentees are expected to join with the minority in a report which will then in fact be signed by the majority of the committee, Mrs. Maynard, on Washington avenue complained yesterday of a confidence game played on her Saturday night. A boy, claiming to be hard up, piteously ‘begged for the priviloge of sleeping in the hayloft of the barn, and she consented, but yesterday morning, found that he had skipped out and with him had dis- sppeared a set of harness. ‘The bill introduced at Des Moines, for the granting of additional powers to cities to straighten and improve oreeks, and the Yill authorzing boards of supervisors to expend not to exceed $5,000 a yearon the improvement of such creeks running through cities, will probably not be reached at this session, unless perchance by a *‘sifting” committee, and a pushing lobby, 0, M. Druse, of Lincoln, Neb,, Is ar- sale of Gallowsy cat- tle at Maoce Wise's stables April 3. The ranging for a g ulon lor Mr. Page and one for Mr. I.lnn. Mr. Linn said on Saturday that his dog was going mad and he had got to kill him. Mr. Page has killed both of his dogs. To-morrow evening the fourth contest for the gold watch is to take place at the rink. As the excitement at the previous contests has been the increase from the first, and the crowds of spectators also, there will, no doubt, be an unusually Miss Kittio Whitney was awarded the watch March 4th, re- ceiving the largest number of votes by those present for being the most graceful lady skater; on the 11th inst Miss Mat tio Palmer won the watch and carried it for one week, wnen on the 18th Miss 1da Tostevin obtained the prize. Oscar Sprink, the boy arrested for stealing & draw-shave from a cooper shop, was before Judge Aylesworth Sat- urday. 1t was proved against him that he was in the shop and was fooling with the shave, and it disappeared with him. Soon after he was caught selling it at a secondhand store for a mere trifle. The boy claimed that he did not steal it, but that another boy, whose name he does not know, but whose face is familiar to him, met him on the street, and gave him the shave to scll, saying it was his father's and he had no farther use for it. This story seomed very gauzy, but the caso was continued to give the police a chance to find this mythical boy, if pos- sible. on large attendance. The old city scales aro being ropaired 80 that Weighmaster Galvin may open up business. It is probable that the city council will repeal the ordinance licens- ing city scales at $10 a year. Itis claimed that this general licensing of scales cuts into tho welghmastor's busi- ness, and makes the office almost worth- less, while it gives room for fraud and misunderstandings, A purchaser who thinks ho in safe because ho has a cor- tificate of the “city scales” as to weight, finds on investigation that tho load has been simply weighed on the scales, per- haps of the very man of whom ho has purchased, and that all there is to itis that the dealer Las got a liconse at 810 a year, which makes his scales ono of the “eity scales.” It is reported that Walters has aban- doned his ambitious designs on the chief- tatnship of the firo department. It is to be hoped so. In view of the law which states that the chicf can only be removed every business man and the board of underwriters signed remonstrances against a change, in view of the fact that many of the department have threatened to resign if Walters gets in, in view of the fact that now the department is working harmoniously, and Chief Tem- pleton is doing well, it would hardly seem that the counal would dare to make the change simply to reward Walters for working for Vaughan's elec- tion, Councils do just as strango some- timos, though. Fisher took the lead at the start, followed by With- erall, Stevenson and Nason., Stevenson foll on the second lap and withdrew. The contest at this point began to be very exciting, the audience applauding loudly at every spurt. Witherall passed Fisher on the fifth lap, and gained the lead by one-half lap. Nason helped ma- terially in pushing Fisher to the front in trying to pass him on the twelfth lap, and he succceded on the thirteenth, being three-quarters of a lap be- hind Witherall, Fisher slipped shortly afterward and withdrew, giving Witherall and Nason a clear track for tho contest. Nason, amid loud cheer- ing and applause, gradually decreased the the distance between himself and Weth- erall, but on the twenty-hirst lap his limba refused to carry him farther and he fell all in a pile. Witherall slowed up and comploted his twenty-second lap in four minutes and twenty seconds, win- ning the prize, a commutation ticket of twenty admissions. Then came the first exhibition practice game of polo between the two Bluffs clubs. The club composed of the older boys made a very fino appearance with their new uniforms, consisting of white flannel shirts, laced with red cord, and dark panta. There was o tedious delay in starting the game, caused by a delicacy on the part of the white-shirted boys in appear- g in their new uniforms. Tho audience, noticing this, took great de- light in applauding vociferously, ns each one separately appearod, causing the hue of the faces to rival the chord with which their shirts were laced. Game was finally called, and after_considerablo effort on the part of the Whites they suc- ceeded in gaining the goal. Harry Ward, of the yotingor club, los- ing his skates twice, retired, but did not roturn before the Whites gained the oal. The break for the goal was very excit- ing. Three fouls were claimed, two of which wera allowed. The Whites won the second goal also, which gave them the first game they have won during their the boys heretofore winning everything. Mr Covall, of the boys' club, did not play, he being out of town. The clubs consist of seven players each, and us the rules state, each club has one oal tend, two half-backs, one covor- pomnt, ono point and two rushers, by which they aro designated The game consists of placing a ball half way botween the two goals which are situnted at cither end of the hall—they aro six feet long and mmne inches high. Ata signal by the referce a rusher from each sido goes for the ball and the play- ing then becomes general until the ball is driven under a goal, which counts one for the successful side. In caso a foul is * | claimed the referee places the ball in the conter again and play is renewed, pro- viding he allows the claim; if not, play continues at the point at which the ball was when the foul was claimed NOTICES.
