fHE DAILY ’BEE. COUNCIL BLUFFS. Friday Morning. March. 21, SUBSCRIPTION RATES: = 20 centa per wock g s $10.00 per Year By M - OFFICE: No. 7 Pearl Street, Near Broadway. MINOE MENTION, Aditional local on seventh page. To-day is the last of school for ten days. M. Seanlan, for being drunk, was fined £7.60 yesterday, The funeral of Miss InezStewart takes place this afternoon. New spring goods just received at J, Reiter's the tailor, 310 Broadway. Regular meeting of Fidelity Council No. 156, R. A., this/(Friday) evening. Only twenty-five cents to hear Mrs. Brown at the Baptist church to-night. J. H. Dalton and Rebecca Ralph, both of Pacific City, were yesterday married by Justice Schurz, Elocutionary entertainment at the Baptist church this evening for the Home of the Friendless, The Presbylerian young folks hold a social at the church to-night and a pleas- ant time is promised. Casady, Orcutt & French can't enum- erate the many spring novelties in their new stock. Call and see for yourselves. Cortfidence men are said to be hovering abeut again. They ought to be fired out without any warning or waste of words, James Nichols, the upper Broadway ‘baker, has let the contract for a two-story brick store,:20 by 84, to be built at once. Ma, Stewart, of Scott & Stewart, was yesterday admitted to practice in the su- preme court. Wm. Sears was also ad- ‘mitted. The aldermen find quite a storm of indignation raised on all sides at the sug- :gestion to change the chief of the fire de- partment. Go to Casaly, Orcutt & French’s and be convinced that they have the largest and best selected stock of carpets you ever saw. It is the intention of Fred Bokemper to remove his saloon to the building he is now fitting up on Main street opposite First avenue. Froe lodgers are getting more and more plenty at the police station. Ten slept on the floor there Tuesday night and nine Wednesday night. Mias Berger has been obliged, on ac- count of ill health, to give up her posi tion as teacher in the public schools for the present, and Miss Swearinger is fill- ing the position. Philip Ragan was arrested yesterday on a warrant issued by Justice Schurz, charging him with mayhem. It is claimed that he tried to feast off the finger of Samuel Scribner. Permits to wed were yesterday given Neils L, Jensen and Anna Maria Jen. sen, both of this city; to Michael Seipel and Lue Simons, of Neola; also to J. H. Dalton of Pacific Junction, and Rebecca Ralph, of Mineola. Just as James Harrold and his wife were preparing for slumber Wednesday night, about thirty of their friends marched in on them. It wasa genuine surprise party, but the victims rallied, and a happy time was had by all, It is to be regretted tsat the old Bryant house is not to be torn down and replaced by an elegant building as was planned. 1t is being overhauled and re- paired greatly instead, so as to render it fit for occupancy tor two years or so. Those who have coveted the possession of cornice poles for their windows need covet no longer. George R. Beard is now selling beautiful walnut cornice poles, with rings, brackets and all com- plete at only fifty cents. That is cheap- er than doing without them. It was reported yesterday that the young woman who recently attempted ®uicide at the old Bryant house, tried another dose of poison Wedneaduy night, and sgain failed. She must be almost discouraged enough at her suicide failures to die anyway, without poison, A farmer driving along upper Broad- way yesterday, bringing his wife, butter, girls, eggs, ete., into town, met with an sccident. The end of the pole dropped down, the team kept on, the whole load went over, and live stock and produce alike had to be fished out of the mud, The Le Fleurs are back in the dug- out. Just what they are good for except to furnish cases for justices, and work for officers, it is hard to tell. Monsieur 89t to flogging madame night before last, and sho had him pulled, and as soon a8 he was sober enough to thump her, fshe wanted him let loose. Justice Abbott put him under $50 bonds to keep the peace. Will Mayor Vauhan resign his office of justioe of the peace! It is hard for 'V:lg:n himself %0 suswer, and harder anycne else. It appears that if he does resign the town trustees will be the ones to elect his successor, If they will elect John Jay Frainey the Vaughan * - seoms willing to resign, but it is said that M. G. Griffin has & majority of the trus- ~ tees pledged to him. Frainey claims the ~ position not because he run the Vaughan i ‘eonvention, and helped in the oampaign, - but he came near to be elected by the people et thelast contest. Vaughan _ Wauta to lot Frainey to, but if by slip- o ping out Griffin will slip in he wants to hold the fort. ¥t is a game of freeze out. The funeral of Mary Inez Stewart, who suicided on Monday last, has been postponed to this afternoon at & o'clock at the Baptist church, The Troy Telegram says: *‘Mrs, Brown is an elocutionist of rare ability, and her recitations on Decoration day at the City hall moved the vast audience to tears.” She is at the Baptist church to- night. 1t is related of one of the new police- men that he commenced blowing his whistle lustily, and after the others had hurried to him to give the assistance sup- posed to be needed, he said: “Say, boys, did you hear the news about Lawyer Cadwell being robbed of $800 by a man with a revolver”' He looked sheepish enough when they began to “‘cuss” him and informed him that that happened the night before, He had just got onto it, and felt it his duty to do something. As was announced in Tue Bex, the tailors a day or two ago presented their employers with a demand for a new acale of prices, some of which were an ad- vance. The employers deciding to grant some, but notall the advances, the tailors yeaterday quit work shortly before noon. Bome of the tailoring establishments are non-union, and hence it does not affect them, and the others will probably be running as usual in a day or two, as the matter will doubtless be adjusted in some way. There is no trouble, and no dispo- sition to create any. o — TALK WITH I'0OSTEVIN, The Observations Taken by Him Late- Iy in Reference to a System of Sewerage, Thomas Tostevin, before retiring from the office of city engineer, had by dirce- tion of the council been taking observa- tions, making measurements etc., for the purpose of getting the necessary date for the forming of some goneral system of sewerage. Fe has prepared a map with field notes showing the eleva- tions and various other needed informa- tion and has placed it in the hands of the council. An a rosult of this survey, Mr. Toste- vin suggested as a main drain, one run- ning from Broadway at the Northwestern depot, straight south a few hundred feet more than three miles, to a point where the old channel of the Missouri was sev- eral years ago. The fall for this distance would be four foet. The suggestion that has been made, that a drain run north to the lake, appears to be anything but feasible from the observations taken and from the map as it appears. The Missouri river just west of the lake stood 10.50 above the place of reference, while at the old river channel, south of section 12, at the suggested terminus of the draw south- ward, it stood 3.50, just seven feet fall. This drain proposed by Mr. Tostevin would involve the building of about one mile of drain outside the limits of the corporation. To avoid that necessity the channel of the creek could be brought at little expense, to a point sufficiently low at the middle of section 2 to turn and receive this main drain or sewer into the creek channel. The point feasible for such a juncture would be about a half mile inside of the southern limit of the city. This would be a temporary ar- rangement to avoid too great expense on the start. From that point he suggests that the channel of the creek be deepened some, and with the aid of a flood or two it would clean itself out well, and a few thousand dollars expended would carry the water there to a lnrgs pool at the southeast corner of mection 156, From there there are two courses open, one by a natural line of drainage to the south- there being a slough 4,200 feet, which would give virtually that much ex- cavation already done, but little work being needed on it. From there a chan- nel would noed to be dug 2,400 feet in nearly a straight line to the Missouri near Childs’ mill, at a point that prom- ises to remain unchanged, and which there has been no change in thirty yesrs, The permanence of this point ne of the advantages which Mr. Tostevin urges in this case. The course thus suggested is, however, larger than to go east from the pool, but the permanence gives it the preference, On the excavaton of 2,400 feet the depth would have to be on the average, eight foet. With this main drain or sewer running thus, the other sewers could be run into it, too, that it is a great necessity and must be had. A rough guess at the cost of this work suggested above would place it in the vicinity of $100,000, whqu is not one-quarter of the estimated cost of some of the plans suggested. _ With theso explanations and sugges- tions the map prepared by Mr. Tostevin and the field notes scoompanying it be- some an interesting study to those who are concerned in city affairs, . | Moines on THIEVES AND THUGS. Auother Atempt Made 1o Go Thnough Tenney’s Jewelry Store. A Victim Claims to Have Been Robbed of At an early hour yesterday morning another attempt was made to burglarize Tenney's jowelry store on upper Broad- way. A pane of glass was cut and a piece taken out and thrown out in the street. Billy Smith, the next door neighbor heard the nowse, and shoving up a win- dow looked out but the thieves had dis- appeared. His awakening had spoiled the plans. It will be remembered that Iast summer the same store was gone through while Tenney was at supper, and about $1,000 worth taken. LOST A FAT ROLL, Thomas Ford, whose father was a well known citizen here in years gone by, ap- peared at police headquarters yesterday morning with a _pitiful story of having been robbed of $350. He claimed that he slept at the St. Joe house, and when he awoke he found that his money was one except §10. The night before he fifid ko gt drinking prallg froely, and as John McAvoy was with him, the po- lice arrested John. No money was found on him, and as Ford would not prosecute he was released. Several other parties were brought to the front and searched, but nothing found on them, and no very satisfactory clue had up to last evening been obtained. i . Artists' Material of every kind at Bearn's, next door to postoflice. FUN AND SKILL. The Entertainment and Exhibition at the Roller Skating Rink, Last evening there was another big crowd at the roller skating rink, The great attraction of the evening was the presence of Prof. Goodall, who gave an exhibition of fancy skating which was well worth seeing and called forth en- thusiastic applause. He is a skater who in some respects is even better than Daniels, who so captivated Council Bluffs, and in all respects seems fully up to Daniels. He 1s very graceful and some of his movements show marvelous skill. To-morrow evening there is to be an exhibition practice game of polo at the rink, which will excite much interest. There will also be a mile race, being twenty times around the rink. 1t will be open to Omaha skaters also. A medal is being prepared_by Michaels Bros., the jewelers, who will “present it to the win- ner. — e —— PFRSONAL, W. C. Thompson, of New York, arrived at the Ogdon Yesterday. C.
