On February 26 there was the special election on the proposition to build a new court house and jail; one woek ago thero was the city election, and yesterday was the school election. The election yesterday was the most quiet of all. Notwithstanding the im- portance of the election, the citizens generally paid little attention to it, while many who are generally so enthusiasticin their work at the polls were not to be seen, there being apparently none of the common incentives of money or personal promises. The only teature of special interest was Olarendon had a ticket in pecial interest, as has been said on previous elections, he being cred- ited with having a chronic yearning for the position once held by him. Itseemed generally conceded that the ticket bear- the claim that A. E. ing the names of Dr, Macrae and R. T. Bryant was not in the interests of Clar- endon, while that of P. C. De Vol and F. W. Spetman was recognized as the Clarendon ticket. The majority of the citizens have got tired of having theClar- endon matter brought up each year, and as all seem satisfied with the presentcon- dition and prospects of the schools, no change seemed desirable in that respect. Many expressed themselves, too, as feel- ing that in case of a change ever being deemed needed, the control of the schools should not be placed in the hands of a man who was apparently over-anx- ious to get it. The feeling against any supposed Clarendon movement was rongly shown. Henry De Long claimed to have received a personal letter from Olarendon himself, enclosing a ticket bear- ing the names of P.C. De Vol and F. W. and asking him to work for e polls. This Jetter he made public by having it at every polling place. 1t was as follows: Hexky De Loxa—My Dear Sir: Can you consistently support the inclosed ticket? It is brought out against the ticket which is being urged on the voters by Pettibone et al. —and that iscomment enough on it. The enclosed ticket con- tains the names of two business men,who s believed will serve the people with honesty and fidelity. 1f you can do so, will you take charge of the ticket at the First ward poll during the whole of to- morrow? If yes, I shall reciprocate the favor in any way you may determine. Please tell the bearer what you will do. I called at your home several times, but failed to seo you. I shall not be on the streets much to-morrow, but Mr. Atkins, Folsom, Couch and others can answer any further inquiries. The bearer has can be had in t drug store. Truly, your friend, A. E. CuareNpox, Mr. De Vol and Mr. Spetman are both men who are held in high esteem here, and so many of their friends stepped into De Vol & Wright's store to learn for front of the store bearing the words, C. De Vol is not a Clarendon man. This denial satisfied y. Mr. Spetman also denied that he was connected with any plan to favor Mr. Clarendon, He issued a circular, as fol- lows: TO THE VOIERS OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, A circular having been issued intimat- ing that I am pledged to the interests of one A, E. Clarendon, as a candidate for 1 the oftice of superintendent of schoo! wish to emphatically deny every impl tion made in said circular conuecting me in any manner with Mr. Clarendon's persistent attempts to force himself upon the public schools of this city, as super- intendent. I never have been favorable to his candidacy in the past, and am under nv pledges for the future. F.
