THE I)AILY BEE-~ COUNC L BLUFFS, MONDAY, MARCH 3, 1884, BEE. 'RAH FOR VAUGHVN The Gatheriog al lhs Conrt House Saturdey Night, v H]‘l GOUNCIL BLUFFS. Monday Morning, March, 3. [)AII Y Somo of (he xtid the ing. PTION RATES: - 90 conts per week - 1000 per Yoar The court houee was well filled with Saturday night, some drawn | from an enthusiasm over Vaughan, and many out of curiosity: All shades of political faith were thero but it was generally recognized as a Vaughan meot- ing and 0 conducted. John Ahles call- ed to order after Vaughan had appeared with his band and the musio had ceased. By Carrler = x By Mal - - citizens OFFICE: No, 7 Pear] Street, Near Broadway. MINOB MENTION. Additional local on seventh page. The Chautauqua club meets this eve- ning. New spring goods just receivedatJ. Keiter's, the tailor, 310 Broadway. New goods arriving daily at the carpet store of Casady, Orcutt & French. Father Clark, of Red Oak, has been appointed successor to Father Ryan, who died recently at Shenandoah. If the city want a rattling good adver- tising agent, Vaughn is the man. If they want want a good mayor, Flickinger will do. There were Gl arrests by the police during February, of which 19 were drunks, 9 disturbing the peace, 7 tres- pass, and the rest for various offenses. Secretary Curtis has hit a good plan by devoting the noon meeting of the Y. M. C. A., every Saturday, to the considera- tion of the Sunday school lesson for the next day. Alexander Sullivan, president of the Irish National league, is to speak at the opera house next Thursday evening and steps will be taken to forma branch league here, The Bachelors club had a merry time at the institution for the deaf and dumb last Friday evening, Soap bubble blow- ing and a candy pull were among the amusing features of the evening. A special attempt was made yesterday at tho Broadway Methodist church to raise 4 deficiency of about $160, there having been extra expenses during the revival meetings, A goodly portion of it was raised. All 0dd Fellows are invited to attend the ball to be given by Hawkeye lodge at Bloom & Nixon’s hall next Thursday evening, but outsiders will be expected on invitation only. The affair promises o be an unusually enjoyable one. Vaughan says he has no criticisms to sanke on the present city administration. * That was a bad slip of the tongue. If, as it would appear from this, he endorses the present administration, then where is the hoped for change for the better. Burglars wero detected at Shenandoah the other night boring through the rear door of a store. The burglars opened fire, sending a bullet through the coat sleeve of one of the officers, who re- turaed the compliment, but the burglars made good their escape. It Pettibone can be elected alderman at large, and then secure the position of purchasing agent for the city at $260 a month additional salary, and keep the position of purchasing agent for the achool board, he will be a good deal of a monopolist of the buying business. 1t is now stated that J. M. Palmer has concluded to withdraw as independent candidate for alderman in the First ward. This leaves McGargar a pretty good show for being elected. He has the making of an excellent alderman, having enlurprha coupled with integ- rity. N. C, Phillips will get more votes than many expect, and may got in, Many object to Pettibone on account of his previous record, and others find fault with Siedentopf because of his being in a be chairman, and accordingly nominated him as such, John Jay Frainey, think- ing that there ought to be some editorial wreath surrounding tho namo of W. Mr. Parsons, Hymns were sung by a quartotte consist- img of Mrs. Seaman, Mrs. Hanchiett and Mensra. and Berger Fitch, with Miss Berger as accompanist. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, among them being a harp of cut flowers, a tribute from the ladies of the Bethel society. Among the touching details of the arrangements was the picture of the aged mother of Mr. Cole, which was placed by the casket, and Rev. Mr. Hamlin very feelingly al- luded to her necessary absence, The emblems of mourning attached to the large easy chair in which Deacon Cole was wont to sit also spoke silently and tenderly, yet imvressively, of this broken link in the family circle, Many friends followed the casket as it was borne to the cemetery, wherethe remains were laid away in a vault, the Odd Fel- lews, of which order he was a member, conducting the services at the grounds. i e A Boston contemporary says, that the maker of the Hardman piano is a Hardman to beat—a bottom fact.
