Friday Mornmg, Feb, 29, S SUBSCRIPTION RATES: 20 conts per woek $10.00 per Yoar OFFICE: No. 7 Pear] Btroet, Near Broadway. MINOB MENTION. Cheap railroad tickets at Bushnell's. To-day is the last day of registration. Lot every voter register. John T. Oliver is to ocenpy one of the stores in the new Masonic temple. The city election promises to be a still hunt and as shch “‘mighty onsartin’.” “Unknown’ was yesterday fined $9.60 for disturbing the peace at Stella Long's place. The Lay Templeton company appeared last night, and will appear again . to- night. A number from this city went over to Omaha last evening to hear Lawrence Barrett, A portion of the Shiel Agar company were at the Ogden yesterday en route for St. Louis, The Bluff City engine has now been housed in the Rescue building, as the old building is to be torn down. The Council Blufi's Hunting and Fish- ing club is to have a meeting this even- ing at P. J. McMahon's office, To.morrow evening there is to be another meeting at the court house to finish making up another ticket. 1t looke as if it was going to be pretty close for Auditor Burke to get thore, being nominated by both parties. Jacob Koch yesterday declared his in- tentions of becoming a full-fledged Amer- ican. He will make a good one. A number of the roller skaters went over to Omaha last night to attend the masquerade carnival at the rink there, Mrs. Mary Jones, milliner, and Miss Emma Palmer, dressmaker, are to occupy the store of J. T. Oliver, on Main street, aftor April 1st. The last returns make the majority against the new court house and jail over 300. The offisial canvass of the vote will be noext Monday. Saturday evening the little folks of Broadway Methodist church give a musi- at cal entertainment, assisted by the Misses Oliver and Tostevin, Yesterday the Platner diyorce case was heard in the circuit court and a decreo granted Mrs. Platner, the ground being neglect and cruelty on his part. There is a great chance for improve- ment in the programmes furnished for the opera houso entertainments here. Small type and poor printing makes the most of the trouble, Justice Abbo't yesterday got hit in the eye with a bit of hot coal flying from the fire which he was poking. The in- jury was quite painful for a time, but he will not probably lose the sight. Next Monday is the time that tells, Those who have been howling for reform can then act ay well as talk, The result will show how badly the majority of the citizens really want a change for the better, Little Corrinne is to appear in a mati- nee next Saturday. Her last appearance here was rather a disappointment to many, but perhaps she may do better this time, or have a better company, It i to be hoped so. Tux Bre wasin ercor in saying that the Omaha Glee club was at the skating rink Wednesday night. They were ex- pocted but did not come: The evening papers which copied the erroneous item from Tur Bee will pleass rise and cor- rect themselves now, Casady, Orcutt & French here arrang- «d to move on the 1lst of April, and will ocoupy the first floor and basement the new Masonic building, This will make large and elegant quarters, and will bein keeping with the growth of their business and the front rank which they have gained in their line, The wtores to be occupied by them have a frontage of 60 feet and & depth of 100 feet, Charles M, Harle, who is the republi- can nominee for city attorney, is cer. tainly » self-made young man and he has mot the conceit possessed by some, and hence does not consider himself finished. The city noeds a careful, painstaking attorney just now, and while Harle does not dash off his opinions on the spur of the moment, he is pretty sure he is right belore he goes ahead, and that has been & great lack with some in the past. J. C. Bixby has secured the agency of the Beuner & Cole fire escape, This is the one now in use in nearly all the principal buaildings in Chicago, and which wras recently shown up so satisfactorily in At consists of & stand-pipe with ladder and plasform attached, and connections for hose on each floor and on the moof, there being a Biamese for two lines of hose for the frst floor, - There sre many building here and in ~ Omaha -M wfln tobe thus psoteoted, propared to make ollll he should & w b,thwinumud OF course evening democratic pa- )y point l‘m'mfl' for nuyur tion, said “that he should try, if elected, to fill the office #o as to be of benefit to tho republican party.” Flickinger did say something of that nature, but the democratic organ does not give the rest of what Flickinger said. He said also that he “‘should endeavor to act in the intorests of all'trua friends of the city.” Now, if Bowman and his followers do not consider themselves true friends of the city, they may perhaps object, but it is a slim pretext for a flop about. The democratic organ, in giving its glowing account of the many virtues of Pottibone, forgot to show up the way in which as a member of the board of elect- ion he tried to let coal contracts, It rlso neglocts to tell its readers how he has tried to help along the morals of the city by barring mission Sunday schools out of the school houses. There are several other matters in Pettibone's rocord which the democratic organ forgot to mention, but which the voters will remember. He may be & very nice old wan, but has he shown himself the kind of a man to rep- resent the people! The voters of the Second ward are anxious to elect him be cause they think he will get some im- provements for them, but they may be like the frogs who wanted a king. e —— For Alderman At Linrge, At the request of many citizens 1 hereby announce myself as Independent candidate for the ofhce of Alderman-at- Large, Naruan O, Prrnuirs, i MAD DOGS. Still Further Them, Theroe has been an unusual number of | g0 mad dugs in this vicinity during the past month, and in some sections there has been 80 great excitement caused and in- dignation raised as to make citizans al- most anxious to shoot down anything and everything that is in the form of a dog, unless muzzled. The trouble caused here, and espec- ially the loss of so many hogs belonging to Marshal Jackson, has already caused people in the city to be on the alert. 1In Gainer township there has been several cases of mad dogs and stock bitten. Wes- ton was a short time ago thrown into ex- citement over the rampages of dogs there. From The Malvern Leader the following is learned concerning another mad dog excitement: Charles Munsinger, Esq., the popular nurseryman from near Tabor, made The Loader an appreciated call Friday, From him we learned the particulars of a recent made dog scare in Rawls township. One Suudly, some three or four weeks ago, u strange dog made his appearance in Mr. neighborhood and manifested strong lynmwml of hydrophobia. He snapped Munsinger's dog, and afterward made a tour of the neighborhood, biting a dug belonging to Joseph Haines, als, some hogs belonging to the latter, and some cattle of Robert Hurlbutt's. On the afternoon of the same day the dog was chased down by somo boys and kill ed in Mr. Munsinger's dooryard, About a week ago Mr. Haines’ dog went mad and bit dogs belonging to Messrs. Mc- Pherron, Rice and Gates, when Mr, H succeeded in killing it. One of Mr Haines' hogs also died from what was supposed to be hydrophobia, and others have shown signs of the san.e disease The other dogs that were bitten, or sup- osed to have been bitten, are kept care- fully chained and muzzled, and it is hoped nc further trouble will occur. e — A Boston contemporary says, that the maker of the Hardman piano is a Hardman t({ beat—a bottom fact. B, Payton, of Lancaster, Mo., was at the firm of Cole Bros., who for thirty years have been in the lightning rod and pump business, the local firm here being R. 8. Oole & Oo. In business he has been very successful. He has always been rather conservative, but of wise judgment, a oxreful and just man. For nearly all his lifetime he has been a mem- ber of the Baptist church, and for years has been one of its strongest supporters, workurs and advisers, and in all church onterprises the name of Deacon Cole has been prominently connected. He leaves, besides his wife, two sons, one of whom, Jay, is connected with R, S Oole & Oo., the other isa member of tho firm of Cole & Maxwell, the livery men. Ho also leaves five daughters, Mrs. Ridpath and Mrs. Boone, who are at the Indian agency in Dakota, of which Mr. Ridpath 1s the agent; also three daughters, Misses Laura, May and Min- nie, who live at home.
