Wishing toknow how the afiair atood, he took a street car of the south- ern line to go to the house of Lelong, who resided upon the heights of the Arc ae I'Etoile. Tt was raining fiorcoly that morning Twice in succession the young man, seated in the interior of the car, had given his place to ladies stauding on the platform; then somo of tho passengers having got out in front of the Church of Invalides, ho was ablo to seat himself anew near the door. This time 1 will not budge,” said he to himeelf. “I am damp and chilled; enough of sacrifices to politeness!” At the station of the Ecole Militaire, a stout lady hastily got on the car and strove to push into the interior, *‘No crowding on the plarform!cried the con- ductor to her. She cast covetous looks upon the occupied seats, and particularly upon that of Georges, who was the only one of his sex 1 the midst of fifteen wo- men, The young man stiffned himself. “No, no,” thought ho. “I will stay where I am! 1'd rather give up riding in the cars if, whenever its rainy and cnld‘l must always remain outside, If she were a protty woman now 1'd gain a word of thanks or a smile, along with a cold in the head, but with this lump of fat the gamo isn’t worth the candle. You needn’t 1ook at me with a supplicating air;I don’t caro whother yow're warm or not!” Gradually the stout lady’s looks ceased to bo imploring; they grew dark and con- temptuous; she muttered broken sentenc- es between her teeth. “The politeness of tho day! The re- spect due to age and sex! They leave a weak woman exposed to all the inclemen- cy of the weather, and make themselves comfortable without deigning to take pity on her sufterings! It's shameful, it’s dis- gusting! Ah! we live in o villainous epoch!” Inritated by these attacks that could not have been more directly aimed at him, Georges said: *I have already given up my seattwice, madame; your insinuations, therefore, have no effect upon me!” “Not to do one’s duty to the end,” an- swered the stout lady, “is exactly as if one had done nothing at all!” ““The persons I have obliged are not of that opinion.” “Will you permit those you leave out in the rain to differ from them?” “‘Certainly; differ as much as you want to.” “Thank you! At—at—atchi! Some people would let others stranglo to death without offering them a glass of water!” orges had the bascness to reply, with asmile: “At least I have the consolation of knowing that where you are you have no lack of wate: #The executioner is mocking his vict- im!” ¢ Enough, madame, enough!” ““At—at! At! —at!—" The stout lady’s sneezing was lost in the noise made by closing the door. Georges thus cut short this agreeable con- versation. But through the glass the an- gry woman’s eyes did not cease to riddle him with ficr{ glances until the last sta- tion was reached. As he made his way to Lelong's resi- dence Georges was still laughing at the exasperation of his stout enemy. There he learned that the conferences would soon result in the desired interview; he would see and be seen. In short, the following week ho was summoned to at- tend a representation of “La Dame Blanche,” The letter gave him the num- ber of the box, together with a minute description of Mlle. Clementine Perrach’s toilet. When sheappeared he loveled his opera glass and saw that his friend, far fro having exaggerated the young lady's besuty, had rather underrated it.
