IThe Railway Pools, H1cAGo, February 6.--The notice which the Union Pacific gave of its in- tention to withdraw from the Trans-con- tinontal Association expires to-day, and the officials of that road announce that they will abide by the notice and report no more business to the pool. The Rock Island road has given tho usual thirty days notice of its intention to withdraw from the northwestorn traflic association and tho Northwestern road has given a similar notice, with reference to control of Towa traftic assoiation® Theso two asso- ciations are not pools but traflic agroe- ments for maintenance of uniform rates with hoavy penalties for violation. A, EAruy,” ——— Phillips Death and Funeral, Bostoy, February 6.—At an early hour this morning people began to gather about the late residence of Wendell Phil- lips. None were admitted to the house but intimate friends and relatiors. There were no services in the house. At 11 o’clock the coftin was borne from the house to the hearse. Several hun- dred persons, including many co-workers, followed the remains to the old Hollis street church, where the funeral services took place, conducted by Rev. Samuel Longfellow, of Cambridge. Among the preminent clergymen present in the pul- pit were Rev. Edward Everett Hale, C A. Bastol, James Freeman Clark, A, M, Miner and Minot J. Savage. The inte- rior of the church was jammed to suffoca- tion by tho friends and relatives of the dead orator. Among those attending the services were largo commiitees from both houses of the legislature, the com- mon council in a body, delegates from the Women's Sufirage association and labor organizations. After the services the body was borne to Faneuil hall, and as soon a8 the crowd wero gotten into order by the police the public were formed into lines and admit- ted. The coflin was guarded by four col- ored soldiers. The face of Mr. Phillips wears a placid half smiling expression, but its appearance is most natural, People passed reverently by the coftin before the guard of honor, and then quietly departed from the hall. After the public had withdrawn, and just pre- vious to the removal of the remains, a plaster cast of the head was tazen at the request of the family. The funeral pro- cession ro-formed and the comn was borne to the 0ld German burying ground on Tremont street. The strects were again crowded, and streets in the vicinity of the burial ground were denscly packed. There were no formal cere- monies at the tomb. The ooftin was placed in the Phillips’ fanily tomb, 1t is understood this disposition of Phil- lips’ body is only temporary, and it will soon be transferred the burial place of his wife’s family in Milton, Mass. e e— A Put up Job, Sr. Louts, February 6,— Further in- quiry of the arrest iu Detroit, Sunday, of Dennis Downer, for robbing the Pacific express on tho Wabash road, last Sep- tember, discloses the fact that Manuel Beaucbigh is none other than Burt H. All factories have shut down, the schools are mastly closed, trains are abandoned and it is still rain- ing to-night. WueeLiNG, February 6.—The river has risen all day at the rate of eight inches an hour, The Seventh ward on Wheeling Island is almost entirely sub- merged. Residents have abandoned their houses in many cases, others have moved into the second story and reach their dwellings in skiffs. The Jow por- vions of the Firstand Eighth wards have been under water all day and the river is now encroaching on the heart of the city. DBridges over Wheeling creek are in the water, railroads are under water in places and travel is altogether sus- pended. No mail is received or deliv- ered, The locks have been taken off the mail boxes to prevent them being clogged with mail. Freight is refused by all lines. Many houses are surrounded by the waters. A flood as great as the famous ono of 1882, is expected. Residents of exposed local- ities are abandoning their homes, and merchants are removing their stocks to places of safety. 'Throe mills and facto- ries have been stopped by the water reaching the fires. Gas is already shut off from the Island.
