RouLer Skates—Vineyard, Henely and other styles, at Brackett's, 224 and 226 Broadway. A man named Cotes was arrested yes- terday afternoon for being drunk and using obscene language. There are 226 cases on the docket for the coming term of the superior court. Of these 109 are old and 117 new cases. Iron doors are being put in the opera house, so that in case of fire parts of the building can be cut off, and thus savelife. Fred. Witzki, who was bruised by be- ing caught under a falling stone at the new Masonic temple, proves not to be so badly injured as was at first thought. The boards across the sidewalk on Broadway, near the Herdic barn, have at last been pulled off. It is no longer necessary to go into the muddy street to pass there. The same old programmes appeared at the last entertainment at the new opera house, and as a cousequence not half the people could read the cast of characters, the type being so small. The report of the chief of police shows five arrests for burglary last month, Four of these, however, were the little boys who broke into Dohany’s hall on the lost day of the month. The old cannon to be used for corner pieces for the soldiers’ lots in the ceme- tery are being taken up to the grounds, and will be put in position soon with due ceremony and formalities. Tue Beris in recept of the Webru- ary number of the Pocket Railway guide of lowa, published by Nelson & Ben- zinger, of Cedar Rapids. Itis hard to conceive where it could be improved in convenience for the traveler. Dr. Rice, while walking along Seventh avenue, had a bad fall on account of an abrupt break in the sidewalk. Somo of the small bones of the foot were injured, 80 that the doctor suffers much pain, though able to be at his office, The social gospel service will be hald in the rooms of the Y. M. C. The blank bonds which are to be filled out and filed by those bidding on the paving contracts, were not even printed yesterday, and the bids are to be opened Monday. This makes it rather close for those even who are on the grounds, ‘while it seems “‘clear off” for contractors r’hfi”‘.l‘lmunflyflnhflfly ‘got the blanks, have them filled and ro. turned, in time. Rev. J. G. Lemen gave another lecture vt Glenwood on Thuraday evening which was largely attended and proved highly pleasing. The citizens of Glenwood have taken a deep intesest in the Home of the Friendless, and after the lecture Mr., Lemen presented the matter and the fol- lowing were elected to serve as a local board of directors in Glenwoon: J. V. Hinchman, the banker; 8. C. Osborn, county auditor; A, J. Russell, merchant; A. H. Brent, stock and grain dealer; T. The Amonnt Fiencen From an English Farm Hand by a Forgery, The Accused Forger a Young Man and Now in Jail, A young man giving his name as Chas. Wilson was arrested yesterday by Deputy Sheriff Chatterbuck for forgery, and for fleecing a young Englishman out of £50. It appears from the papers in Justice Schurz's court that young Wilson had been at work on the farm of Daniel Mec- Dermott, a prominent resident of Silver Creek township. Becoming acquainted with a young Englishman named E. Lavington, working on a farm not far away, it is claimed that young Wilson forged his name to a due bill reading as follows: “JANUARY 12, 1884. “Due C. Wilson, 8168, for labor for me during 1883, “‘DaN't, McDermorr,” Taking this bit of paper to Lavington he induced the latter to lend him 850 on it, leaving the bill as security. He then skipped out and came to Council Bluffs, Here Wilson, under another name, stopped for a short time at the St. Jo house, and then left there without r{)ly- ing his bill, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on that, so that now he is under a double charge. He was placed in jail here yesterday. The date of a hearing has not been fixed. The forging appears to be a crude af- fair, and yet it worked so successfully that the young Englishman advanced $60 on the strength o being good secur- ity. The prisoner is a young man, who does not have the appearance, at least, of having been at the forging business very long. SHENANDOAH GLEANINGS. How the Oollege 18 Ohanging and New Enterprises Starting Up. SuexANDOAH, Iowa, January 31 —The Western Normal college opened the third term on Tuesday with a large attendance of students, and four new professors. Prof. Croan, from Valparaiso, Ind., who resigned the superintendency of public schools of Anderson county and pur- chased a half interest in the Shenandoah school, was on hand. Prot. Longwell, who resigned the presidency of the Bloomfield school, in this state, to come here, takes charge of languages. Prof. Clark, ex-principal of the Normal school| of Stanbury, Mo., takes charge of mathe- matics, Prof. \incent, of Ames, Iowa, takes charge of the commercial depart- ment. These teachérs, with Profs, Wil- son, Disney, Farr, Wormwood, Strong, Black and Packard, make a fac- ulty unusually strong for a school s0 new. The recent elocutionary entertainment and the musi- o1l matinee given by the students at the close of last term were greeted with full houses and highly appreciated. The public printing agony is over, and the provender was secured by The Post, which showed the largest circulation of any Klpsl’ in Page county. The success of The Post is noteworthy, and is an en- couragement to any paper endeavoringto stand by the better elements of society and to publish the news, the whole news —including that of the superior sort, and nothing but the news. The arrival of Mr. A. B. West, to take charge of the Q" depot here, has not yet happened, although The Nonpareil seemed to know all about it and stated so clearly that he had returned that no one could fail to understand, The postoffice has been temporarily located in the implement oftice of Monk, Anderson & Co. The location is not as convenient as the old one in A, J. West's building, and the office has too fearn that 8 new room has been secured te which it will be moved as soon as is practicable, More room and greater convenience will be se- cured in the new locatlon. A neweshirt factory has been estab- lished by a new firm, Matthews & Cure. A Leap Ycar Woman Takes a Novel ‘Way to Get a Husband. Loap years are always productive of some playful changes in society customs, peculiar to thefyears dividable by four, but there has strayed into Tur Bre office a novelty even for leap yeas, Ad- vertisements for correspondence are com- mon at all times, and personals for matrimonial prospects, but this is differ- ent from either, It isa printed circular, the lady evidently being dotermiued to advertise her matrimonial wants exten- sively, 80 as to be sure to secure an en- gegement. This oircular, neatly printed, is as follows: Dear Sin This is leap year, and I wishto get married, I am nearly 30, under medium size, plain lookin; healthy.
