D, Oglethorpe, Pa, B0 L ‘War on the Wires. Vrom The Philadelphia Tines, Yes, nir; I had my men this morning cut every telegraph wire that crosses my roof,” said Mr, Dooner, the proprietor of Dooner’s hotel, on Tenth street, last vight. *‘These telegraph companibs scem to think that private propefty-owners have no rights which they are bound to respeet, A few months ago the Western Union company set up & pole in front of the hotel and in order to protect the vault under the sidewalk I was forced to spend $150 in building a suitable founda- iton for that pole, on which now nearly 200 wires are strung aleng before the up- per windows of the building, I couldn't prevent this, however, for they have the right of way along the sidewalks. But they wero not contented with this, and sent their men here to string their wires over the roof, and before I knew it there were twenty-five or thirty of these unis- ances, forming a regular network acros: the top of the hotel. Whenever the weather was a little warm down those wires would drop two or three feet, from the expansion of the metal, I suppose. On several occasions the entire hotel washing, which was hung up there to was ruined by iron rust from these wires. But the worst of it was the con- tinual running here of the linemen to re- pair the wires. Day and night they would walk in, as if they owned the bullding, and tramp up-stairs and around on the roof, with perfect disregard for the noise and dirt they made, ‘At last I got tired of it and forbade their wmin[‘; Then they left the front door alone, but camein at the side door. I couldn’t lock that, forit is the servants’ entrance, 80 I hired a watchman to guard it. This worked very well for a fow days, for after that 1 discovered that they went around to therear of the hotel and climb- ed up the fire-escape. Come around and look it,” and Mr, Dooner took The Times reporter to the alley at the back of the hotel, “l couldn't afford another man to watch that fire-escape day and night, so I cut off the lower end of it,and thought I had them barred out this time for sure,”” Mr, Dooner sighed and wiped his forohiead. “But they got ahead of we just the same, A day or two ago those linemen came around back here and climbed up on each other's shoullers until one of inquired the “friend of Maud 8. “‘Why, no,” said the young lady blush. ing violently—*‘that is—why, of course I haven't any daughters.” “Oh, you're out on the rond telling punlvlu wf;ut to do with their girls before you're even married, let alene the mother of a fow visions of loveliness?
