Mr. Pierce says that he is dealing out a quarter of a ton of coal per month to those applicants who are not known to him or the commissioners, and when the cases are investigated and the applicants are found to be destitute, as they have representod themselves, the allowance of coal is increased to one-half ton per month, In some cases where two fami- lies live together, a quarter of a ton has been given to each family. The coal, however, is of a very poor quality, and 13 furnished to the county under contract. There are about 150 destitute persons who are being provided in Omaha by the conuty, whiefi is a very small number for a place of 650,000 people. The suit that is to be inatitu in a fow days will be against the Brighton ranch company, located about thirty-five miles from ]{numie. Wyoming. This company has enclosed 52,000 acres of the pu{;lic land. The suit will proba- bly be a test case, and the cattle men of the west will look for the result with con- siderable interest. THEY ARE AFTER HIM On a Clear Trall, and Cannot Help About one month ago a young man named G W. Siebenstein, who was en- gaged by Mr. P. A. Gavin, book and FACTS FROM FREMONT. Fducation, Enterprise and Law in the Ascendant, The G. A, It. Executive ampment —The Solled Doves Fly Away- A New Rallroad and Other Martters. Correspondence of the I3em. Fremoxt, January 30.—Our beautiful city is thronged with Grand Army boys, who are here as delegates from tho vari- ons posts in the state, attending the exec- utive encampment. Most of the posts aro represented by their full delegation of select representatiues. Over 300 dele- staticnery dealer of this city, to take the road for him as traveling agent, it seems first took in the town of Fremont and canvassed by sample. The price of the books were $6 each, and $1 was to be paid down upon first delivery of the same, and $1 per month afterward until full payment had been made. In Fre- mont he recoived quite a number of orders, and among them one from Mr. J. F.Gabler, who is now in Omaha. After the delivery of first book he went about, and re-collected those of hia deliv- ery upon the required supposition thathe needed them, as his samples were short. Mr. J. F. Gabler paid him in full for his subscription to the work, and refund- ed to him the book when asked for it upon the reasons above stated, supposing all would bo right. Mr. Gabler, in addition to his sub- acription fee, is also out on this modern “‘Canada Bill” two first-class passages to Fremont, inasmuch as the young *“‘cuss” was busted. The book which Mr. Gab- ler bought and paid for was intended for a lady friend of his at Fremont for aNew Year's gift, and Mr. Gabler feels quite sore that he was so much disappointed, and in defense of himself had to purchase another gift at renewed expense—of course Mr. Gabler never mentioned this, inasmuch as he is an ex- tremely modest young gentleman, until Mr. Gavin secured tho services of officers, and then Mr. Gavin promptly rafunded to Mr. Giabler tho book which he had lost by the treachery of his traveling agent. He loft Fremont with all tho books and money secured. Ho is indobted to Mr, Gavin, his em- {:loyor, about $100; to Mr. Brooks, hotel eoper at Fremont, $25 or more; a hotel keeper at Blair, $20 or more. And, upon inquiry, since learning the above facts from a friend of ours, there are numerous smaller accounts about town yet unpaid. If caught he will probably join the gang of the two “‘quack” doctors, R S A Prosperous Life Insurance Com- pany. The statement of the Mutual Life Insur- ance company, of New York, shows assets of 8101,148,248.25 ut tho closo of the year 188 and during tho year hna paid S13,150,360. to polioy-holders. If the New tai ard of 43 per cont. be used, the surplus ls gates responded to roll call, and the re- port of Department Commander J. C. Bonnell showed the Nebraska depart- ment in a most prosperous condition. New posts are being organized in all parts of the state, and old posts are con- stantly receiving new memboers. In the past year over sixty new posts were or- ganized and over 2,000 new members were added to the roll of Nebraska's Grand Army boys. The council or en- campment will close its work to-day. The principal work and strife appears to be in selecting officers and the place for the reunion. Kremont so far appears the destined place. THE SOILED DOVES GO, For som time The Tribune of this city has been making vigorous war on the sporting houses of our city. It's work has had the desired effoct, as yesterday several of the madams were officially es* corted to police headquarters and re- quired to put up a fine of 85 each and costs, and advised by his honor to pre- pare te depart from our city at once. Our city fathers, in council last night, authorized chief of police to see that all houses ronted to such women should be vacated within twenty-four hours, or the extremest penalty of our law would be administered on the owners of such prop- erty. Our citizens say amen to such vigorous work to purify the moral influ- ences of our city. EDUCATION AND ENTERPRISE. The Fremont normal school and busi- ness college is an assured establishment. The $12,000 donation and site are se- cured, and the buildings will be erectod as soon as possiblo. This gives Fremont another attraction, and is destined to be one of our many permanent and prosper- ous institutions. NEW RAILROADS. The Salina, Lincoln, Fremont & De- catur railroad is now reported a certain- ty. The parties who went easttoarrange for raising means to construot the road, have returned and reportthat everything is arranged, and that the road will be completed to this point inside of a year. The B, & M. is the road most wanted to come here. Our citizens would give that road the greatest encouragement and assistance. We all expect the B. & DL over $12,000,000. The company has hitherto restriotod its business to the healthy portions of the United States—the north and west chiofly—and proposes to adhere to a policy which has wrought results so satisfactory. e —— MARRIED.
