The defendiug at- | torney exerted himself in their behalf in order to obtain a writ of habeas corpus, and Sheriff Cannon was detained at Lin- coln for some timo on this account. Bat the governor, viewing things in their proper light, ordered the issuance of the proper papers to Sheriff Canuon, and the ‘‘quacks” go back to where thay are wanted for their dishonesty, and they will, in all probability have an opportunity of learn- ing good trades at the expense of the state of Tennessee, which will, porhaps, make more useful men of them in the future. They employed an honest fellow named W. B. Kerley prior to their coming to Omaha, and brought him here with them as their servant. They promised him great things and borrowed all the money he had, which we ars informed by Mr. Jones, clerk at the Metropolitan, was about fifty dollars. Mr. Jones informs us that the poor fellow is now here and without a nickel. The Motropolitan also has an nccount against these two would-be limbs of Esculapius to the amount of forty dol- lars, N DEFENSE. Its Advantages Sot Forth in Glowing Terms, The great number of persons coming into the Loup country at this season looking for homes on the sunny slopes of these beautiful rivers, is a fair indication of what may be expected tho coming spring. The reports of our magnificent crops for the past eight or ten years are commencing to dispel the prejudices heretofore formed that the State of Ne- braska was a sterile and barren wasto. Wo loft Towa, the bess agricultural state m the Uniou, with some regret, for wo left doar friends, who will ever hold a bright place in our memory. We have the advantage of soil, climate and society. The veay best men and women that ever trod the green earth of God, the forerunners of a yreat and advanced future generation, the intelligenco and enterpaise of the east are here; and their shining wims and sublime ambition is to educate their children, beautify their homes, and with ewoot_humanity and unselfish purposes beuutify life. They enjoy the conven- iences of life, and some of its luxuries: and with their plentiful stores and gen- erous hospitallty they are ready to say: Sweep down with your storms frowm the north ward, Come vut from your ice-guarded lair; Our lardors have food for a nation, Our wardrobes hive clothing to apare; Far off from the corn-bladed prariv, And out from the valloys and hills, Tho furmer hus swept us his harvests, The miller has emptied his mills, A friendly hand is stretched out to the Edward. While we heartily endorse what he says in regard to railroad extor. tion and The Omaha Republican, we re- gret that he should make his article an excuse for a personal fling ac M. J. Thompson. 1t looks as though *‘Alpha” was & recent convert to anti-monopoly principles, and had not learned the great truth that personal abuse is not argu- mont. Your correspoudent has nover voted any but the anti-monopoly ticket since he came to Nebraska, and voted and worked against Thompson, not because he believed him to be a scoundrel, but because he did not be- lieve that any man who was elected by the straight republicans of Boone county sould be anti-monopolists, But in jus- tice to Thompson, let me say that he never voted tor a steal of any kind, voted consistently for all anti-monopoly meas- ures that came before the house, and although he had two railroad passes ten- dered him he refused them both, and paid his way like a man. We have known him ever since we have been in the state, and hayve never known him to stoop to a mean action. He is universally respected, and has oppréased people of all nations, and the needy of all states, and they are invited here to obtain homes. This state will not b far_behind others on regulating tariff for the transportation of our pro- duce to market, for there are influonces at work now which will ere long accom- plish this beneficial end, and which will do more to mould the destiuy of the stato than any man uncrowned by power of eloquence can possibly effect. Tho comfortable and commodious farm dwell- ing which has taken the place of the sod house, the blooded hogs, cattle and horses which have taken the place of the old-time prairie rooter, the Texas steer and Broucho pony, is a true indica tion of the prosperity of our people. The sparkling eyes, the chubby forms and rosy cheeks of our children caused by the bracing and salubrious air, is a true indication of the healthfulney of our country, and persons coming hol?| for the improvement of their health have been benetitted beyond their most san- guine expectations, Our friends from the east who are able, whether for health or pleasure, would do well to take a summer tour througb our state and enhale the balmyand invigorating air see in the eastorn and central portions the confidence of the people of this town to as great an extent as any man herc, In regard to that “Bristol transaction” I want to say that what the U, P. rail- road did in that case greatly rejoiceth the soul of your scribe. For the reason that Bristol has declared to me on several oc- casions that the auti-monopely party was composed solely of *‘sore-headed office- seekers,” and that it was all bosh this howling about railroad exteation, eto.
