She has made herself up with a desire to look pretty, but the result is that she looks hideous. The reason is very simple: She dosen’t know how to make up in day-time. There are thousands of women going around New York every day pamted and powdered in a way that makes a clever actress laugh. The trouble is this: They do not realize that a day make-up and a night make-up should be altogether dif- forent. Any one can sce that there is a difference between gaslight and sun- light, Isuppose. Mr. Booth's make-up as King Lear is an exceedingly good one, but 1 think that Mr. Barrett's, when he played the part at Booth's theatre, was much more striking. His ecffect was gained, however, by the use of s wig and beard made of a very fine quality of fluffy gray hair. Dear dead-and-gone Harry Beckett's make-up as Harvey Dufl, in the *Shaughran,’ was fine, and Harry Mon- tague’s face as Captain Dudley Smooth, in ‘Money,” was a study. He worea full beard and dida’t look a bit like him- self. It made his female admirers moan, and they didn’t like him in the part one bit, but the whole thing was artis- tic. I have seen others, though, who know how to make up both by day and by night, I don’t want to mention any nawes, but the cleverest of them all at this art is a woman who is less distinguished by her acting than by her writing, and less, per haps, by either than by her ability as a painter.” ““But,” remarked the student, “‘people on the stage do not always have to make up 80 as to look pretty.
