Bee has already given the outline facts of the murder of J. M. Shelley, which occurred on Silver Creek town- ship about four miles north of Malvern. Some further particulars are learned from The Malvern Leader. The victim of the murder was a feeble old man aged 77 years, who sometime in November got permission of Joseph Bannister to put a little shanty on his land, and only about twonty-five yards from Mr. Bannister's residence. Thin shanty was an old port- able picture gallery made of light boards, and the sections fastened together by hooks and staples. In this little build- ing the old man kept a small stock of tobacco, candies, canned goods, ete., and lived there entirely alone, he having no with 8. T. Walker & Co., has a new boy at his house. The gqld watch for the most popular assistant yardmaster Will be awarded at the fair this evening. W. Dr. Jefferis now wears a fine slk tile, it having been awarded to him at the Cathelic fair, he receiving the largest number of votes of any of the physicians of the city. The only news offered at fire depart- ment headquarters yesterday was that the firg alarm was tried in the morning and would not work. As anews item that is very stale. If it could only be made to work just once, that would be the foundation for & sensation. Justice Abbott has before him a glan- dered horso case. About 10 o'clock last Sunday morning Mr, Bannister called at the old gentle- man’s house, and receiving no response to hig knocking, entered and discoveres to his horror that the old man had been brutally murdered. The body was lying face downward on the floor, the head in a pool of bleod. There were two wounds on the head, each from two to three inches long, and the skull smashed in. A bloody axe found standing by the door was evidently tho weapon used, and there was blood also on the old man's bedstead. No clue was gained as to who committed the crime, or for what pur- pose, A coroner’s inquest was held, but no fresh facts were brought out by that, and thare only remained the sad duty of lay- the remains away. A service was he d Monday afternoon at the Liberty church, the daughter and her husband being in attendance as mourners, The citivens are much puzzled as to ‘what possible motivetherecould havebeen for committing the foul deed, and whowas the murderer. It is not lik '»ly that rob- bery was the motive, az the old man's ossessions all told would not amount to 5100 and even if it had been, murder was not necessary, as the old man was so feeble and palsied as to be defenceless. Some think 1t was for some old grudge, or fancied offence, but this has no facts to substantiate it more than the other. The citizens have held a meeting and appointed a committee to draw up a peti tion to Governor Sherman and obtain signatures thereto, asking him to offer a roward of £500 for the capture and con- viction of the murderer. A committee was also appointed to solicit money in the county for the same purpese. The petition to the governor has secured 150 signatures, and the committee to solicit funds in the county expect to be able to secure enough to be able to offer $1,000 reward in half the county. e —— Another invoice of new type received at Pryor's Bee job office. T —— A 8AD NEW YEAR. A Minneola Citizen S8hot Through the Head by a Ramrod, Minncola was thrown into a state of unusual excitement on New Year's day, by the sad shooting of a young man named Chri indeman. A number of men were in a saloon, and loaded their guns for'the purpose of shooting at a tar- get. One of the party neglected to draw his ramrod from the gun, it being a muz- de-lond-r, and as he stepped out of the nlonn he said, *‘Look out, bo, 8, I'm going O.o shoot,” and pulling up his gun fired. Young Weideman, who had out -han!y before, was struck the ramrod in the eye, it passing through his head, killing him instantly, A coroner's 'y was impannelled, and the verdict to the effect that it was an accident wholly. e —— The City's Bill To rur HoNoranre Mayor axp Crry CouxciL oF THE City oF CounciL BLurrs, Iowa—Gentlemen: I herewith submit the following report of city warrants issued during the month of December, 1883, a8 well a8 the total amount issued by order of i present goungil, viz.; General fund for Decomber. LEAVES FROM RED 0AK, Some of the News Items Gathered There in the New Year. Rep OAK, Ia., January 2.—The holi- days have come and gone, and Red Oak, like most of her sister towns, felt, to some extent, the tightness of tite times, though two of the heaviest dealers in holiday goods told the writer that their holiday trade was but little less than last year, and one of ,our jewelers, on the day before Chriltmu. sold $1,000 worth of goods—this was a fair day’s trade for ‘*hard times.” The friends and admirers of Jack King, the telegraph operator, conspired together and made Jack a present of a nice gold watch and a $10 golden eagle. Jack is popular because ho is accommo- dating, and accords to the public some rights that corporations ought to respect. No. 2, of the fire laddies, made a grand success of their holiday ball, enjoying a good time and clearing lomethmg more than §80. Red Oak is now equipped with a board of trade. Some call it a' *‘bucket shop,” but, whatever it may be properly called, there is an office where (uotations from the board of trade of Chicago are received every fifteen minutes.
