The doctor pro- nounced his disease smallpox. He quar- antined the patient and an attendant at once. Next day he found out the disease was not smallpox, but he kept the pa- tient in quarantine till he was pro- nounced cured, then he burned about $500 worth of government property, all to save himself from ridicule for mis- taking some kind of skin disease for smallpox. Another man, Gus Gutzmacher, had contracted chronic dysentery ~ and was taken from bed and ordered to Fort Brown, Tex., and to travel overland in the worst kind of weather. The liquor that was taken along for the sick men (of which there was quite a number) never came insight of a patient, it was drank by tho officers and the doctor, the sick men were allowed 1o get along the best they could, and live on fat pork, hardtack, coffee and beuns, This was not the diet 8 man suffering with chronic dysentery should have, but it was all he got, and he slept in the open air on the cold ground every night. Just before the man died he told Lieut. A. C. Tay- lor of battery E, Second artillery, and as near a8 I can remoember, he used the following language: ‘‘Lieut, Taylor 1 am going to die, and you are my mur- derer. If you had given me the proper attention I would have been a well man now, but you took me on o march from San Antonio to this placo when I was not fit to be out of my bed and the con- sequence lu you are the direct cause of my death,” This Licutenant Taylor bought two cows, one for himself and one for the company, with the company's funds. His cow ran off and then he took the company’s cow and said the company's cow was the one that ran off. He then s0ld his cow and put the money in his pocket. Thereis not one company in every twelvo that knows how the compa- ny funds are handled, and if they should have the nerve to ask any questions about it, they would be fired from a cannon, 80 to speak, Lieuteuant Taylor, by ac- cidont, got to be commanding officor, r|unrturumntur commissary and ordinance officer.
