THE DAILY BEE---COUNCIL BLUFFS, TUESDAY., DECEMBER 25, 1883. fHE DAILY BEE. COUNCIL BLUFFS. Tuesday Morning, Dec. 25. LSUBSCRIPTION RATES: 20 cents per weok £10.00 per Yoar |OFFICE: No. 7 Pearl Street, Near Broadway. & MINOR MENTION. Merry Christmas, See Joseph Reiter's fall goods. Additional local on seventh page. Cheap Railroad Tickets at Bushnell's, The dummy trains run to-day the same as on Sunday. ® Remember the printers’ masquerade this evening. The alarms of fire thus far this year number thirty-five. The city council will meet Wednesday night if the aldermen get over Christmas n time. Much fun and a good time everyway is assured all who attend the printera’ ball to-night. The exercises of the Episcopal Sunday school are to be held in Bloom & Nix. on’s hall next Thursday evening. Tho new warehouse of Van Brunt, Thompson & Co., near the Northwestern depot, is almost ready for occupancy. One of the news gleaners’ of an even- ing paper is expected to visit another state to-day—the state of matrimony. A Christmas ship was the novel way of bringing the Christmas gifts to the children at the Methodist church last evening. Justice Schonz yesterday slipped the matrimonial yoke over the necks of J. W. Anderson and Hattie M. Terry, both J of Mills county. Although Dr. Pondson is absent, his office is open as usual, and Dr, 0. W. Gordon continues the practice there at the usual office hours, Stern & Kohn, expect on the first of January to move from Main street into Marshal Key's building on Broadway, lately occupied by Brewsater. Rev. Mr. Mackey, the rector of St. Paul's church has one the best Christmas gifts—a bright, bouncing boy—n big stream of sunlight in the house, St. Paul's Episcopal church has been very handsomely decorated for the Christ- mas festival and services, which are to be held this morning at 10:30 o'clock, The drop curtain at the new opera house is hung, the chairs are all set in the family circle and parquette, and the interior begins to show what it will be ‘when completed, The second annual ball of the Bluft City typographical union is to be given this evening at Bloom & Nixon’s hall, It will bea uerade, lots of fun, d music, and ;’h‘:‘q boys -h:'uld have a Jr:::i. The postoftice will be open to-day from 11 a. m. t0 12:30 p. m, No carrier delivery. Office open in the evening from 7 to 8 p. m. The carriers will col- lect mail from the boxes between 3 and 5p.m, 'm.‘-u; ‘which appears in another col umn will doubtless result in the many friends of Miss Stevens having an oppor. ‘tunity of hearing her before her return to New.York. Such a musical event will prove a rare treat indeed, Justice Abbott yesterday had before him a drunken sort of a vagrant, giving his name as McAllister, The fellow was fined 850, and given four hours in which to get the money. He seems to have gone out in the country to borrow it, The ice skating rink has eight inches of solid ice and will be flooded every night. The fence and house will all be completed by this eve and if the weather rl.'mih there will be skating ‘to-night. tis the desire of the proprietors to have the electric light put in if they will run it dewn Broadway. The freight platform in course of erec- tion at the Broadway dummy station, will be completed in a day or two. This is located on the north side of the pas- sengerjplatform, and the engine, when it comes in, will not frighten horses as heretofore, because the freight cars and - platform will be between them and the n:fm. It will be a great convenience to shippers, In moving about one of the big safes hole, The city has 0 long had a build- ing with holes in the floor, that it would hardly know how to get along without them, and 'Squire Burke who has been in the d'dm lfl since its finhthncuu- in a‘“mn' without a hole or two, Hon::: be undisturbed, A post of the G, A. R. was established at Tabor Saturday night by Colonel Ab- bott. The new post starts out with twenty-three charter members, and com- posed of many leading men ot that place, 1t is officered as follows: John P, Smith, Wdi 8. V. C; F. S, Jones, J, V, C.; C. H. West, Q. M.; M. Pinkerton, ; P.H. Drake, O. of D.;J, , 0. G Davié John Glover, Q. M. 8, “tables, One thing is noticeable in the there treme the public has swung to one of ex- treme oarelessness, and some of the patrons have got to fooling and tinkering with the lamps themselves. The man- sgers have been obliged to warn the pub- lic to let the lights and wires entirely alone. The company has employes to look after them, and some very serious accident may result from inexperienced persons fussing with the apparatus. One of the aldermen wanted the city marshal yesterday to make the bands of music stand in the street and play, as there were too great crowds on the side- walks in front of the businesshouses thus advertising. Council Bluffs does not have any Lot the crowds come and go, 8o long as they be- too crowded sidewalks. in the city building, one corner of the | Pear! safe went through the floor, staving a ;. C.; Charles P, Will, adjutant; Charles Elson, 8. M,; Some of the new furniture for the city ~ building has arrived. Among’the lot are new individual desks for the alder- men, & great improvement over the old have themselves, It gives the street something of the air of a city, and a crowd of men buying goods 18 not half so bad as a crowd of men buying votes, and yot there is nothing said on election day about the crowds around the polls—es- pecially by the aldermen. An information was filed before Jus- tice Vaughan yesterday charging Frank Good, an employe of the Milwaukeo & St. Paul, with assault and battery and assault with intent to kill, the battered one being E. D, Phillips, son of R. V. Phillips. Young Phillips claims that after taking a drink or two with Good, the latter assaulted him in the street near Mr. Engle’s store, pounding him up badly, closing hoth eoyes, and almost crushing in his skull. He did not re- cover conscionsness enough until yester- day to give dotails of the assault, and is now unable to be out. . Miss Jennie Flemming, whose stair- way, leading to her photograph gallery, were lately torn down by order of the city council, as an obstruction in the strect, has roplaced the same by a narrow pair, which do not encroach on the strect in fact, though they doin appearance. The council ought to go to work tearing down the other stairways, which are technically obatructions, if they do not want to stand chm:}ed with inconsistency and spite. Why did they not pick out The Nonpariel stairway, or the stairway of some staunch citizen, instead of that belonging to a woman! Miss Floming, by putting up this narrow stairway, evi- dently dares the city fathers to try again. TR R Ladies' and_gent's_clothing cleaned, dyed and repaired at Hurlburt's, 34 Pearl street. —— PERSONAL, Mrs, Aylesworth, sister-in-law of Judge Aylesworth, of the superier court, left last evening for her home in Crescent. D, H, Vail and wife, of Wisner, Neb., are at the Pacific. J. M. Rice, son of Dr. Rice, has gone to Minneapolis on & trip, and it is expected that he will bring Mrs, Rice back with him, the young Indy to change her name from Miller to Rice, W. R. Chadbourne, of Leadville, Col., reached the Ogden yesterday. R. B. Windham, of Plattsmouth, the Ogden yesterday. Ernost Grant, of Minneapolis, arrived at the Ogden yestorday. C. W. Colson, living on First street, is ill was at with an attack of fever, e —e— Highway Rebbery on Broadway. On Broadway yesterday afternoon when the street cars were crowded with lestrians, a stranger accosted a finely ressed gentleman and offered to buy the clothes off his back—a proposition the gentleman would not accept. The stranger began to take them by force, but was informed he could obtain just as stylish and well fitting clothes by calling on Smith & Toller, 7 and 9 south Main street, the leading merchant tailors. GENEROUS GIVERS. How the Appeal Made in Yesterday's Bee Met With Responses, In yesterday morning's BEE there was an appeal for the remembrance of the Home of the Friendless, during holiday season especially, The statement was mude that there were $150 of bills to be met, and no cash to meet them with, Yesterday Horace Everett drew his check for 50 in favor of the Home, and Thomas Officer contributed a like amount. This leaves but 850 for some thrive man to take. Of course the expenses are run- ning right along, and after these bills are paid there is need of cash and other con- tributions to keep the Home going, so that there is still a large chance to show g:nerouity in supporting a work which longs to everybody, and is hence more liable to be neglected. The fact that such representative men contribute is a youcher for the character of the work being done. e —— Go to Hurlburt's fancy steam dyeing and French dry cleaning works at 34 1 street. S — A Yook at Bethlehem At St, Joseph's academy there was pre- sented last evening a novel sight, which interested many of the little folks great- ly, and many older people have never seon the like before. It isa miniature repredentation of Christ in the stable, with the wise men of the east, Mary, Joseph, and other figures, together with the figures of animals of various kinds, while little houses arranged on a hillside represented Bethlehem. The figures are all very lifelike, though smaller than life nize, and the glistening of snow, the sheep, the sheppard and his dog, horses, eam-pl;, and all, make quite & :gv-l oumz bination, and a striking representation of the event nmow being commemorated. Besides this re) utation of the stable at Bothlehem is a beautifal Christmas tree, brilliantly lighted and pleasingly admirea. These sights can be seen again this cvonil:g and Wednesday evening, and none of the young folis should miss seeing them, while the older ones will find scarcely less to interest them. In the district court yesterday morning arrangements were made for a hearing to morrow on the question as to whether Dr. Cross, charged with the murder of Dr. McKune, shall be admitted to bail or not. There have been all sorts of reports about Dr. Cross’ bail. The facts seem to be that his old bond was signed by Phil. Armour, J. M. Palmer and John Keller. After Dr. Cross had been in- dicted some of Postmaster bondsmen objected to his being on Dr. Cross' bond, and Armour accord- ingly went to Judge Aylesworth, before the bond was originally given, he having held the ex- amination, and asked to be released, Judge Aylesworth then accepted a new bond, signed by J. M. Palmer and John Keller. These facts being known, it was claimed that Judge Aylesworth had no Armour’s whom right to take this new bond, and that if Dr. Cross should skip, there would be no valid bond on which to recover. A bench warrant was issued, Dr, Cross was arrested, and now remains in jail until the question of bail can be determined. The prosecution is to be strong, as District Attorney Connor is assisted by Col. Dailey, W. F. Sapp, and N, M Pusey. John N, Baldwin is for the d fense, and will probably secure other as sistance, y Jack Smith was tried yesterday. He was the fellow who robbed a man of $85 at the Broadway hotel. Hes was found guilty. In the case of Arnold Jesse, charged with conspiracy in trying to get 8100 out of John Nicholson, the attorney for the defense, Mr. Sears, raised a demurrer to the information, and it was sustained, the young man being discharged. It secms an_outrago that such an attempt to not only defraud, but to break up a family, should go unpunished, but the law is full of holes, and Attorney Sears was sharp enough to spy one large enough for hia client to crawl through. Floyd Coxzens, the negro, who had a slashing match with another colored em- ploye of the Ogden house, was tried yes- terday on a charge of assault with intent fo kill. He was acquitted. Court then adjourned until Wednes- day. il Innocent fun at _the opera house this afternoon and evening. STARTED IN EARNEST. Water 18 Now Flowing Under Broad- way—The Glen Avenue Res- ervoir Being Filled. As, announced in Tee Bek at the time, the engines of the water works were started up some time ago, but there were vexatious obstacles to be overcome aris- ing from the fickleness of the Misseuri and its waters, but yesterday the big Knowles pumps were set going, and water began to flow through the mains, There are twenty-three miles of pipe, which requires 3,000,000 gallons to fill, but they were soon given their full ca- pacity, and water began to rise in the Glen avenue reservoir, For all that can be sesn now the city will be supplied with water to-day, and the hydrants can be turned on, nuking & Chrismas event, which shall be chronicled as one of the most important in the history of Council Bluffs. Mr. Harry Birkinbine merits ‘‘three times three and a tiger,” for with pluck rarely equalled he has met obstacle after obstacle, overcoming one only to meet a fresh one, and still keeping his grit and enterprise. It is to be hoped that no fresh one will arise to mar his happy Christmas, Madame Harden's double troupe of Royal Marionettes at Dohany’s this after- noon aud evening. —— A Shight Misunderstanding. There was a little row at the Western house between the cook, Billy Smith, and a guest, T. W. Castor, of Under- wood. Smith in ringing the bell to awaken the guem, nspged into Castor's room and dinged the bell in his ears, whereupon Castor raised up and indig- nantly ordered him out. A little later the two met in the office below, and after a few words clinched. Castor got his face rather badly smashed up, and Smith ot arrested, e was sot clear again, owever, TTA e 'or Miss Stevens, Miss Neally Stevens: Learning that your visit among us, on account of your many engagements, is to be very limited, and appreciating your superior musical attainments, we thus early express the hope that you will favor us with a rehearsal, at a time and place to be designated by you.
