Soe Joseph Reiter's fall goods. Additional local on seventh page. Cheap Railroad Tickets at Bushnell's Work on Bryant street is now going on pretty well. The Round Table ovening at the residence of Dr. Mont gomery. Those hand painted tidies in the show windows of Harkners Bros., are making tho ladies all say, “‘Oh, my!” meets to-morrow The nuptials of Alphonse Medgar, the rew partnerof A. Louie, to Miss Mario Campordon, are now announced. Marriage permits were yestorday given to Fred Brunow, of Boone township, and Martha O, Brunow, of this city. Three new members have been added {0 the family at the Home of the Friend- less, one a widow and the other two or- phans. The funeral services of Mrs, Willard, er-in-law of Mr. George Marshal, were held yesterday, Rev. A. K. Bates ckson has bid 8113 for the nt city building and the old barn ck of it, and the council has promptly rejocted it. Mrs., M. Carroll, Luking, Cutting and fitting a specialty., Apprentices wanted, No. 826 First ave- nue, up stairs, Wickham Bros. have done about 810 worth of mason work for the Home of the Friendless, and genorously sefused the proforred cash and donated their ervices, fashionable dress: Charles Nicholson has so far recovered his fall through a hatchway in Fos- ter Bros', store as to be eut and about sain, but he has a pitiable sort of a Jimy. There to:ms to have arisen some mis- understanding about the date of the next Royal Arcanum social. Ttis to be Friday, December 14th, one week from next Fri- day night. A little babe, nine months old, daughter oi Jack Hurly, the night yardmaster of the Union Pacific, last evening got hold of a can of ye and got some of the torri- bi istic in her mouth, causing sovere injuries, ‘I'wo new safes have been put into the new city bullding—one weighing about 7,000 pounds in the clerk’s office, and the other about 4,600 pounds for the audit- or's use. A vault is also to bo built for the old records. Tho report that Theodore Lund had died in his place of business proved to have been started from the fact that he fainted away, having been sufforing some from illness. He lives to smilo as usual, Capt. Hayes, of the polico force, is on duty again after a week's lay off on ac- count of a badly sprained foot result- ing_from too much of a strugglo in landivg & drunken wau inside the cala- hooss, Rev. T. J. Mackay is to lecturo in the wood opera house Friday evening, if Glenwood people only knew him as well a8 Council Bluffs audiences do, the house would surely be packed. Ho is, indecd, @ most popular and very taking spenker, In tho district court yesterday, thero were a number of default cases, and varis ous motions_entertained, and then the case of Richards & Son, of Mobilo, Ala,, inst John T, Stewart, was put on trial, aud will probably tako most of to-day. 1t I8 @ case in which damages are claimed in weme shipment of pork, Tioro was a large masquerade party ‘Thanksgiving night in Boomor township, isome of the guests forgot to take away all their things. L. Tenson, the stock dealer there, finds himself provided wvith an overcont, a buffalo robe, a hat and a quilt, for which he has found no owners yot. The city's finances are now in such #lapo that there is no cash in the police fund for the payment of police officers, and they were yesterday given orders on tle general fund, The council is using the cash of the police fund to pay other bills with, and the men who huflp greatly ) bring in the cash, must be content with discounting their orders, Hd. Grimes, who was arrested for saulting Kaeller, another C., B, & Q. employe, with an iron poker, had his trisl bofore Justice Schuez yesterday, and was discharged, The evidence showed that Kaellor was intoxicated and came for Grimes, threatening to demolish Lim, and Grimes in turn drow a poker on him and hit him over the head, By one | of those provoking freaks of the type occuring in the best regulated priating office, Tie B yosterday stated that the next lecture of the serios being delivered by Rev. J. G. Lemon would be next Friday eveui Notso, Of course nof, Sundav night is the time, A Sun. A evenir ture on Friday night is Lardly consiient, The lostur hext Sun- day evening is to be on the **Absurdities of Boience.” The wire for the electric lights is quite Low at the corner of Main and Broadway, and Ald, Bicker, chairman of the com- iuittee on streets and alleys, has notified 0 company that it must be put up When that wire is raised, the elephone wire should be raised too, and the fire alarm wires. All the wires in th are too low, and ought to be Hans Poter Jensen seoms to have got into deep trouble. A. A. Smith, of Bosmer township, claims that Jensen #old Lim a mower which he found after- THE baker. 1. Jensen, a stock dealer, also of Boomer township, complains of Hans Peter for selling him a wagon also mort- gaged to the same party. The accused | has been arrested and is to have a hear ing boforo Justice Vaughan on the 12th inst, The newspapar men whoso duty it is to after during the ings of the city council pre sit evening evening dreary dra ceedings have tired of sitting around on the window-sills and leaning against the railing, and have modestly joined ina request for the city couucil to provide |a reporter’s tablo and chairs for their | accomodation, The council will doubt |less grant the request, ns it has doubtles been a mere oversight on its part. A visit to the cated the power fo the electric light, re veals a scene of busy The dynamo is already in place, and the building where is lo business. | lamps aro being adjusted ready to put {up and let Blaze. The only cause of de- lay now is the doubt as to the cngine be ing of sufllcient power te drive the dynamo machine, 1f it does net prove strong enough another engine will have to be provided. Despite this, thero 1s every reason to believe that Council Blufls will, within a few days, have the light in active operation. Chief ¥ield yesterday arrested a man who scomed crazy drunk and who was driving at so wild a gait along Pierce strect that he would have run off a precipice and been dashed to death had not a dirt wagon stopped him. The fellow was taken to the calaboose and saved from further endangering his life It seems strange that while a drunken man was saved from driving recklessly into the jaws of death, a good, sober. hard-working boy should be crushed to death by a falling bank. Late revelations show that one theory concerning the robbery of Judgo James' house will not stand, It was supposed that the man who on the day previous, called at the house under the pretense of fixing the pump, was the same ono who burglarized the house, that the pump excuse was morely to give him a and chance to see the interior of the house. It now appears that the man who called at the house to fix the pump was an hon- est employo of J. C. Bixby, and that be- ing sent out to fix a pump, made a mis- take and got into the wrong house, and his visit had no connection with the rob- bery in any way. Among the bills presented at the last city council, was one of Wright & Bald- win fer £30, for drawing up a city ordi- nance. The council has also retained Sapp & Lyman to look after all the city's cases in court, Tt soems as if there was little or no use in having a city attorney under salary all the year round, if the city has to get some one else to draw or- dinances and attend to suits. There are cases in which any city attorney may need help, but it is vencrally supposed that a city attorney can draw an ordi- nanco and attond to some of tho city's nuits. The officer in Bayliss park has been re- lioved for the season, there being no grass to clip, and but little to watch ox- cept a few fallen leaves. The park po- liceman in Fairmont park is to be re- tained a while, it boing thought that it will pay to keep a man at $40 a month to watch tho trespassers and prevent them making tho trees into cord wood. The worst loss tho park ever suffered in this respect was from the acts of a park po- liceman, who being ordered to thin out the trees, cut down a number of tho larg- est and best ones. If a reward was of fered for the detection and conviction of any one cutting trees there, it would probably serve the sa.ne purpose in the winter as a $40a month man, and be much cheaper. —— THE NEW DYEWORKS, F. R. Hurlburt has opened, at No. 34 Pearl streot, a steam dying and French dry cleaning works, Plumes and tips, velvots, silks, satins, gent's clothing, merchant's sholf worn goods, all made as good as now. Paving Oakland Avenue, There is considerable talk and some planning in regard to paving Oakland Ave- nue. Some of the property owners on that beautiful residonco strcot, are vory dosir- ous of having it paved as well as graded. City Fngineer Tcstevin was-at Omaha the otherday in their interest, talking over the matter with Mr. Girant, who is doing macadamizing thero. He has reported to the property ownors very favorably, and one of the difliculties being that the ex- penditure would be heavy, it was found that it could be arranged so as to give a series of years in which to pay for the work. It would bo a big thing for Oak- land Avenue if this improvement could be carried through, and would not only reflect great credit upon the enterpris- ing and thrifty residents, but would doubtless rapidly increase the value of their property there, beyond the cost of grading and paving. 1t is encouraging anyway to sco the citizens waking up, and eager for better thin, o s LY Do not fail to see Santa Claus on Sa- turday evening, Dec, 8th, at Crockwell's openivg, at 316 Broadway. Almost Time for Some Precaution in Digging. Yesterday afternoon another of th fatal made (1 accidents occurred, which have the blufls, a This time the victim was a Loy named Chester Clark, digging away of work of terror to ny. aged about sixteen, a son of Daniel L Clark. The boy was at work with his father and othera at a bank in the rear of the Ogden house, The boy was driving a wagon, ‘and as it was brought up by the bank to be loaded, one of the men warned him to back out, lest the bank should fall. The boy replied that he would not could get his that drive 8o close. thought it tumble before he remarked time he not He spoke oniy too truly about his “‘next time'. To him there load, and next would will be no next time, for even as he spoke a largo quantity of dirt came tumbling down upon him, burying him alive, and covering partically the wagon and horses. As soon a8 possible the poor fellow was dragged out, but it was too late, life had fled. The body was taken to Connell's undertaking establishment, and a coro- ners jury impanelled, consisting of C. W. Mitchell, C. F. Adam and F. B, Fulton, o few wittnesses were examined, and the simple verdict returned that ‘‘he came to his death by being smothered by the falling of a bank while excavating dirt in the rear of the Ogden hotel.” The body was then removed to the home so suddenly saddened, and which i8 located near the Wabash depot. It seems as if these frequent fatalities would prove sufficient warning, not only to those employed in this kind of work, but to the contractors and the city authori- tios. Moro lives have been thus lost here than by almost any accidental cause, and yet the work is pursued in the same old way. It scems as if appliances and machinery might be set at work, which would do away with the necessity of men thus rigking their lives. ————— Six per cont city and farm 1oans, S.
