The Colorado Pool in a Condition Rapidly Approaching Dis- integration, How-the Union Pacific Threw an Ami-BurIingrton Firebrand Into the Towa Poo'. Another Pool In a Very Shaky Con dition, 1 DU — | The Colorado Pool association, com- posed of the roads botweon tho Mis souri river and Colorado points, is in as procarious a condition as tho Towa pool, and unless steps are speedily taken to stop tho suicidal competition now going on between the Union Pacific and the Denver & Rio Grande on the Utah busi- ness it will soon go out of existence. The Colorado pool got along tolerably well until the completion of the Denver & Rio Grande to Salt Lake City and Qgden, Utah, Since then there has boen 80 much trouble that Commissioner Dan- jels has almost been driven to despair, and now admits his inability to carry out | tiup provisions of the pool. The Utah busingss does not go into the Colorado pool, buy the fight on the former is af- focting the Colorado ratos most soriously, It wa9 learned yesterday that all clasaon of frenib 8o now buing taken by the Union Pacin, ™"} 50 GuRi river points to Salt Lake City .’ °0 018 per 100 pounds, the regular rate in the neighborhood of $3. 'he Rio srande having no line cast of ['enver, is unablo to competo for the busi. 1¢s8, its conneotions not being willing to p. ™ rate on a 50-cent rate. It isnow claime. that much of the business taken by the Union Pacific at Missouri river points at cut rates, ostensibly for Utah points, is dropped off at Denver and Colorado points included in the Colorado pool, This has caused much bad blood among tho compotitors of the Union Pacific, and it is claimed that they are also cutting Coloradorafes. Itisnotbelieved, however, that the Union Pacitic desires a disruption of the Colorado pool as far as freight business is concerned. 1f the pool should be broken the Burlington, which has its line from Chicago to Denver, would have all the advantage, as it could Sanders J K Sharp J W Stephenson W B Stowart It A Schmack S M Swansson N Schnack M Touton A C Tarner T Terry J O Taylor & M Tuma F Taylor | J Veshurgh 1 Vennaman J A Vandorkrock M W Wetmore J M Werscham A Woollens W Wilkine M I, Waléh A ‘Wharton N White I’ 3 Wangh R E WhitedJ K Wehher 1 E Ydesen N P Zimmerman K Znlacoffer C FOURTH CLASS, Mrs T C Rivining C A Boland C Flower A H Smith LADIES, Aylesworth Mrs A—2 Allen Mra H own Miss [, Benediet Miss M Brownell Miss C Browning Miss M Baldwin Mrs L J Diumqvist Miss B Comes Miss I, Catlin Miss A Daley Miss A Donahoo Miss A Dunn Miss I Durnot Mrs H W Ldwardtsen Miss Franklin M Ferguson Miss M TFashorg Miss C Forsting E C Foulks Mrs F—2 Franklin Mias C B Grant H. Stewart, of the coast survey offloc, who has beon seriously ill for soveral months, died at ten_o’clock last night at his residence, No, 204 Fourth street southeast. 116 had long been a sufferer from rheumatism, con: tracted while in the army, and spent part of the past summer in New York undergoing treatment, which fora time appeared to give him considerable relief. Hoon after returning to Washington, however, the disease again developed itself, this time in the direc- tion of the heart, and in such an acute form as rendered a fatal result only a question of a vory fow duys or weeks. Col. Stowart had “zn excellent army rec- ord, was a writer of considerable ability, and as a good and true man was univer- sally respected by his official associates and the citizens of Capitol hill. He was a native of Obio and for some years a nowspaper publisher at Des Moines, lowa. Sale will continue evenings util completed. Terma cash. W. B. Grino, Auctioneer, quote through rates to Denver and Colorado points which the Union Pacitic would be unable to meet. The Denver & Rio Grande, however, has but little interest in the Colorado pool, and will forco a fight if the Union Pacific con- tinues to fight it on the Utah business. Mr. Lovojoy, the new president of the Rio Grande, when in this city a few days ago, stated emphatically that he meant to make war on the Uniou Pacific at all competing points, whether they aro in Utah or Colorado, and that he was bound to break the Colorado pool if the Utah troubles were not settled at once. The Rio Grande would no doubt have commenced hostilities against the Union Yacific in Colorado but for the fact that by so doing it would help its hated rival, the Denver & New Orleans. Under the Uolorado pooling agreement nonoe of the Colorado roads can interchange busi- ness withthe Denver & New Orleans, and this road is, therefore, compelled to occupy an isolated position. 1f the Rio Girande withdraws from the Colorado pool the Union Pacitic and other roads will join hands with the Denver & Now Orleans and give their business between Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pucblo to the latter road, instead of to the Den- Deing t pool. The Southwestern Association, however, is not likely to be affeoted by the fight, as no serious dissensions exist among the lines in this pool, and the Milwaukeo & St. Paul has no indepen- dent line to Southwestern Association points, and will therefore not be able to give this pool much trouble. How She Proved that She “Was mo Wax Figger.” An Amusing Incident on a Uusion Pacific Teain, Cheyeune Lotter. Tho evening train on the Union Pacific drew out from one of the little desert stations of Wyoming a fow days ago, leaving behind a group of merry young- sters, who had como to see off ' nowly- wed young man and woman. The de- partiire of the trainwas signalized by three rousing cheers by the forsaken young men and maidens, and in a cortain manner strongly emphasized by the start- ling roports of soveral pistol-shots. "o bridat party in the car were intor- estod witnessos of this grand demonstra- tion in their behalf, and, lovingly locked in each othor's arms, leanod from the same window, smiled, and waved their respectivo headgear in adien. A bend in the rond soon removed the married pair and thoir friends from view. The former siowly lowered the window and sought their soats, Immediately they becamo the cynosure of almost every eyo in tho car, and they justly merited the atten- tion. His faco was devoid of that black-walnut complexion peculiar to members of his calling, and its expression was such that it might but recently have bidden good by to what Mark Twain would have term- od a gospel duck's smile, The twain had hardly taken their sats when the young lady burst_into tears. The feoling of lomesickness had already come upon her. She sobbed aloud, and attracted even more attention, thereby— the undivlded attention of the crowded car. The newly-made husband was trained in business in such cases made and provided. The next instant his arm encircled her waist, and the fair form was gently moved as & consequence m a re- clining position, until the drooping head rested upon her protector's bosom. Then the s a prisy ver & Rio Grande, s at prosent. For reason, it _is believed, the Denver & Rio Grande will not dare to carry out its threats against the Union Pacific. Still, with & war with Iowa lines east of Missouri river and a war between the Union Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande west of Denver, it will hardly be possible to maintain the Colarado pool. The Unton Pacific Said to be Stir- ring Up the Strife Among the Iowa Lines, ) “The real causes of the present troubles among the Iowa pool lines. said a prominent oflicial to s ropresenta- tive of The Chicago Tribune on Friday, “have not yet transpired.” While the expose in Tuesday’s Tribune showed that internal dissensions have existed in the Towa pool for nearly a year past, which necessarily Had to lead to serious compli cations in the end, yet 1t did not reveal the truo inwardness of the row. The trouble has been caused, not so much by the competition between the ronds in the pool as by the rivalry between the Burlington and tho ~ Union Pac regarding the Nebraska live- stock business. The business from points on the Union Pacific in Ne- braska goes into the pool, but the busi news from points on the Burlington in Nebraska south of the Platte does not. The Union Pacific has alt along been dis- satislied with the arrangement, claiming that the Burlington did not act fairly, and therefore has beeri stirring up strife anong the Council Blufl lines by giving most of its business at that point” to the Milwaukeo & Paul and the Rock Is- land, The two lust-named roads heing a8 jealous of the Burlington as the Union Pacific, were only too glad to act in har- mony with the latter.” That there is something in the above explanation seems to be indicated by the fact that as soon as it becune known that a rupture had occurred in the Iowa pool General Manager 8. H. H. Clark, of the Union Pacitic came here aud for threc days had private conferences with the genoral managers of the Milwaukee & St. Paul and the Rock Island, The fact. also, that the Rock Island has carried almost as much ot the live stock businers s the Milwaukeo and 8t. Puul, though it readily paid into the pool the amou of its wurplus earnings, and has rather sympathized with the Milwaukee & St Paul, in this matter, indicates that it would rather see the pool go to picces than not. The claim by the Milwauke: & St. Pauy, that its main grievance is the refusal of the Rock Island and the other lowa lines to admit it into the Council Bluffs passenger j.ool on fair terms, is be- lieved to be simply a_blind to eover up the secret understanding that exists be- tween the Union Pacific and the Milwau kee & St. Paul and Rock Island roads. Some’ of these whispers found their way into the damsel’s mouth, because it was noticed that several times the lips of the twain met in closest con- tact. By degress the disconsolate maiden re- turned to her former self, and there en- sued such ascenc of embraces, and kisses, id whispers, and hugs as is witnessed only on a well-appointed-bridal-tour.
