Yestorday an Towa farmer, who came into the city with a load of onions, was made the victim of a very clever confidence game at Homan's stable, wherefho had put up his outfit. He was approached by a horse-trader, who offer- ed to trade him a team of horses for his span of mules. While they were talk- ing the matter over, a third party step- ped up and said to the farmer: “If you make the trade I'll buy your outfit—the team of horses, wagon |and harness—for $260 cash.” The farmer agreed to do it, and the third partygave him 10 to bind the bargain, and said that he would go over to Council Bluffs and get the money and return as soon as possible. He then disappeared, and a few minutes after- wards another man took the farmer aside and told him that a swindle was being put up on him, and that he had better go and see the police. This occurred immediatly after he had refused to ex- change teams until he rcceived the full amount agreed upon. The farmer pro- ceeded up town and meeting the sheriff related the circumstances to him and wanted the rties arrested for attempted swindling, He was informed that no steps could be taken, as no swin- dle had yet been perpetrated. Upon re- turning to the stable he found the team of horses in the stall that had been oceu- pied by his mules, and the mules were gone. The herse trader was there, and upon being called upon for an explana. tion coolly said that he had exchanged the teams and sold the mules; that it was Phillips. Major Furay took the case in hand and Phillips was soon detected. About ten days ago he was arrested and confessod that he had been taking the ar- | articles. The articles taken were mostly femenine wearing apparel, such as false hair and ribbons, These he had been using to attond masquerade partics. He waived examination and gave bai the sum of 500 to appear at the annnl term of the U, 8. court. Yesterday he was indicted ashas been stated. o — A NOVEMBER BLAST. All Hemlock, How it Blows." “Gosh The pleasant sunshine and calm weath- erof to-day proved an agreeable change from Tuesday, during which the Nebras- ka blizzard was abroad in the land. It was a cold, wintry, windy, and horribly dusty day, but Omaha is not the only place that has such weather, as will be seen from the following from The Chicago Nows, which will be found equally ap- plicable to [Omaha, and will be generally appreciated: A NOVRMIRR BLAST, Gosh all hemlock, how it blows! How the dust in voluines goes Cavorting madly up the streets, Blinding every one it meets Filling eyes, and ears, and nose! How the wintry winds give battle To the rusty signs that rattle Au it blow-, Blows, blows, blows, blows, blows, Gosh all hemlock, how it blows! And the hoso—what of the hosn OF the ladies, when it blows? We can see them plain or atripod, On each buxom female biped, When it blows: Ax sho trips across tho gutter, With hor wrappings in o flutter, She in in dreadful putter When it blows; And she glows Like o rose, For she knows That the menfolks at the covnor Havo thoir naughty oyes upon her And her hosy— Hose, hoso, hose, hose, hose— a Bquare deal, as $10 had been paid to bind the bargain as to the §260 transaction, and now that ho had got the horses, he would have to look to the other party who had given him the $10, and who agreed to give him $250 for his vutfit provided the exchange was made. * The result is that the farmer has got a g)uor team of horses on his hands, and his loss will amount to the difference be- tween the value of the mules and horses. I\lus the §10. Itis a question whether ho has a remed, undurfllu.‘ circumstances. The deal was cleserly fixed up, and the persons engaged in it are no doubt ex- perts in that kind of business, and know just how to_ do it without entangling themselves in the meshes of the law. Since writing the above, it is learned that the trade was not such a bad one for the farmer after all. When he learned of the game that had been played upon him, he secured an_officer who at once began looking for the mules. About six o'clock last evening, the missing team was returned to him, with the request that no questions be asked. The farmer now has his mules and is ahead the $10 which was given to bind the bargain. These Are Solisl Facts. Although no names were men- tioned, many persons concluded that he proposed to have Congressman Laird and the Stinking Water transactions investi- gated, A representative' of Tue Ber, upon meeting Mr. Lambartson. called upon him to explain and be a little more definite in his statement relative to land frauds, “The investigations to which I re. forred,” replied Mr. Lambertson, *‘were the alleged frauds in Custer county. 1 did not intend to have anybodyinfer that I had in mind the Stinking Water busi- ness. 1 understand, however, that an investigation of the so-called Stinking Water land business had been made, or was about to be made, by special agonts of the Land Department, and until they make their report on the case no action will be taken by me.” o — THE GLEE CLUB CONOERT, Miss Amy Sherwin to be the Prima Denna.
