Cne Lovisvitie, Kv., 9.~A moon. shiner named Henry Wilson, from Bell county, confined in jail here, yesterday received a rather queer present” A large registered letter came to the prison for him, and as the envelope was a ‘m'ge one, and apparently well filled, it was thought a considerable amount of money was con- tained in it. Considerable surprise was manifested when it was npunul{ and the tips of five bears’ tails dropped out. Wil- son was seen by a reporter of the Com- mercial tte later on in the day, and asked concerning it. He is a large, rough-looking backwoodsman, with a hard, but a very singular expression. In answer to the Teporter’s question he said: *“Wal, before I left home, when the officers came after me, I s6t my bar traps near Morton's Ford, in Bell county. I asked my brotherJake to watch it fur me, and let me know if he ketched anything. Three days ago he went over to the trap, and found a bar in it, and he killed him. A little further off I hadmade a pon trap, and when he came to that he found two of the critters sitin’ on it. He blazed away with his gun, and killed one of 'em, wounding the other, but it got away. When he looked under the lid of the trap he found two more bars that had been caught in it, and he killed both of 'em, makin” four in all, not coutnin’ the one that got away. Later in the evening he went back to the trap, and found another of the critters fastened in it. The last one waf a whopper, and weighed over five hundred pounds. He cut off the tips of all their tails, and sent them to me with a letter.” ““How are these bear-traps and pens arranged?” asked the reporter, “‘The _trap is a reg’lar steel trap, and weighs abont sixty pounds. 1t is sot,and abait put in it, so that when the bar pulls the meat it closes up, and you've ot him. The pen is made of heavy wooden posts driven into the ground in a circle leaving a spage of about six feet in the center. On the top is a heavy lid, which raises up and down on the posts, It is very heavy. and takes three men to lift i When the trap is sot, the lid is raised to the top of the posts and fasten- ed with a trigger, to which is fastened the bait., At the bottom is left a big hole for the baa to glt through, When he crawls in and pulls the bait, it throws the tnig- ger, and the lid comes downon top of him mashin’ him agin the ground.” *‘Are there many of the nimals in that locality?” asked the reporter. “The woods is full of 'em. There's been a great deal ef mast on the trees there, and they come into the woods in bunches. You kin go out almost any day and find one or two of 'em.” *‘It seems that the moonshiners are pretty thick as well as bears!”’ “‘Wal, there isonly nineteen of us here now from Bell county; but, lah’s-ah-me, they ain’t begun to ketch them yet; and, between {ou and me, there’s heaps of 'em up thar that they ain’t going to ketch, neither,” and with a chuckle he walked away from the iron grating, and became an nterested spectator in the game of cards that was being played in one corner of the cell. ati Commercial ¢ ‘whey Were Divorced, INDIANAPOLTS, IND.—The Sentinel says: A Kentuckian writes of how he passed from misery to happiness. *“We'd been together eleven years, and we never were what you may call congenial, T mean rheumatiz and myself. Finally it got to be altogether too’ lively for yours truly, and I just invoked the power of St. Jacobs Oil. That's how me and 1wy pain came to be divorced.” — Debt Seizures, Moxstreal, November 12— The On tario Car company of London, has scized for debt 144 cars of the Quebec Central and 270 on the Southeastern railways. OUMAHA, NEB THE MINISTRY, Ministers Discassing. the Snbieet “Calls" to Preach, * Divorce and Sunday School Werk. WEDNESDAY 11:20 1, Fremosn, November 1, Dr. Webb, of Grand Island, had sent his paper on a call to the ministry, not being ablo to be present and it was read by Rev. G. W. Read of Gibbon. Criti- cisms were offored by Rev. Chafiee to the effect that the convictions of the man him self and the opinion of his church were | not sufticient. Dr. Stone: God duplicates His calls one to the minister and another to hear- ors, as a modification of which, however, he said Robert Hall was not encouragd at | first. Rev. Chaffee: ,What is the call not from whom or the evidence of it but what is itself! Rev. Hutten: Paul telis what it is - he must be of good report as the first item, notes of Dr, Barnes being referred to on that subject, Rev. Hapgood, of David City. Dr. Robinson nll Rhode Island teaches the same as Barnes’ notes. Rev. Osborn: Every man of port s not called.” Rev. favored the paper as read. Rov, . M. h‘nggnrt. T aman proachos and sinners are converted, it is ovidence of his call, Rev. Holmes of Blair: Councils should be cautious in ordaining preachers Rev. Chaffee: The woe spoken of rests as much upon what is preached as upon the preacher—if 1 preach not the gospel. At 1:30 devotional meeting, song,*‘Ma- jestic SweetnessSits Enthroned.” Prayer by Rev. Rockwood. Vice-President Holmes took the chair while Rev. Bodell read a paper on “‘Close Communion,” quoting the “Common Book of Prayer and many other formulies and showing that exclusiveness is practised in some way by all denominations—that Baptists are not alone excepted in the order of the strictures. The paper is to be published. At 2:40, Chancellor Balch, of the Bap- tist Institute of Learning at Pella, Towa, gave an addreess being roquested to toll us how he raised money--he said hecould not tell them but if they had money he could show them how it is done. 1t was a good talk, >rof. J. M. Price, from the Morgan Park school of Chicago, spoke of the work of Prof. Harper, . teacher of Hebrew, teaching by correspondence. Dr. Stone read a paper on the philoso- phy of prayer. First, What it is, and second some of its perversions. Objections to prn{ur because God is invisible are as weak as objections to telegraph or tel- phone, or even letter writing, becasse the parties are out of sight. God is not mutable because he answers prayer, for he foresaw the wants of the petitioner as well as the petition. Much of the so- called prayer is not intended for the ear of Giod, but for that of the audiences, sometimes as striking at some one who could not strike back. A profitable and interesting discussion followed. Rev. G. W. Read, of Gibbon, read a paper on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit —its nature manifestation and perpotuity. Criticisms were offered by Rev. Bedell, Dr. Stone, Dr. Smith, of The Chicago Standard, and Rev. J. A. Guild, of Ash- land. Rev A. W. Webb of Palmyria, Rev. Geo. Scott of Tecumseh, and Rev. Hut- ton of Albion were appointed commit- teemen. Programme for the ensuing year: A resolution discouraging divorce and marriage other than is justified by the New Testament, was passed by a rising vote; not to extend clerical courtesy to the same. Question Box brought out many good suggestions from Dr. Stone. Adjourned. Wednesday evening-—At 7 o'clock Rev. G. W. Read, President of the Sunday School convention opened the exercises, addressing a large concregation for a short time upon Sunday school work, Rev.J. W. Osborn, Sunday school missionary, led a_responsive praise ser- vice, after which Rev. I. Thearle, of Chi- cago, delighted the audience with an ex- cellent address upon Sunday school work as connected with the work of the Publi- cation society. He gave Boston Smith's definition of the Sunday school, the Bible study and service of the church. One Sunday school had no small chil- dren, saying they had none—they were used to go and bring in somebody else’s children—must have small chillren or lose the hope and promise. The old are hardest to keep in Sunday school- may be they know so Tittlo they are ashamed to be the The superin- tendent must not be expected to be so much more than a man and so much less than an angel. The assistant superinten- dent must have a good deal of shaking- hand religion, and the secretary should not be kept more than two yers from the study of the Bible for his own sake, The Hib{u should early take the place of lesson leaves. The International lesson leaves are not the best thing, but are com- mended because we can do no better. Adjourned, RY COLLEG OTTERY $30,000 forl $2.
