At the time of the arrival of the 8:15 express train last night, while unloading bagyage, the express messenger, Oscar Whisler, was robbed of money packages amounting to several thousand dollars. From the express messenger and others we learn the following facts: There are usually two baggage cars on the above named express, but this timeit only had one, thus compelling the ex- pressman to wait until the baggage was unloaded before he could unload his ex- press. Heo pulled his truok just beyond the car door and helped to unload the baggage. Aftor this was unloaded he knelt down to pick up the tongue of his truck, Ed, Wert, an em- ploye at the depot was standing just barely three feot from him, and whil he (Whistler) was kneeling down he felt what he . ipposed to besome one brush- 1st him, but soon after he turned w a follow jump off the platfc and run toward the Atlantic flouri mills. In a moment he missed his pouch which hoe carried strapped on his back. He asked Wert if he had scen it. Wert replied that he had not Further search proved that iv had been cutand the pouch taken. The knife of the robber made quite a slit in his overcoat. The whole affair took place in less than three min- utes, and the messenger could hardly re- alizo what had happened. B, CHARGED WI ‘.*;TI‘L\IAIN(L HM A Young Man from Lewis Lodged in Jail, Yesterday there was brought to this city and lodged in jail here a young man giving the common name of John Smith, charged with mule stealing, the particu- lars of which charge are given by The Atlantic Telograph, as follows: A man giving his name as John Smith was arrested at Lewis, Sunday evening, having in_his custody a pair of mules which he had stolen some weeks ago from a farmer near Noola, Pottawattamie coun- ty. The arrest was made by Charles Shinley, marshal of Lewis, who, assisted by Ed. Patterson, brought Smith to At- lantic this morning. At this point the prisoner was delivored to a deputy sheriff of Pottawattamie county who took him to Council Blufis, Smith is a son-in-law of Emory Richardson, and had been keeping the mules at Richardson’s, on the H. J. Graham farm. He claimed that he had bought the mules with money furnished him by a half brother who re- sides in Madison county.
