Holland, the Main street livery- man, has sold out his building and busi- ness to W. D. Cole and George F. Max- well, who enter at once upon the posses- sion of the same, the firm name to be Cole & Maxwell. Both have many ac- quaintances and friends here, and a good business has fallen into hands fully capa- ble of keeping it good. Col. Abbott has returned from North- boro, Page county, to institute a post of the G. A. R., to beknown as Gettysburg post. It iw officered as follows: f’ C., George E. Morrill; Adjutant, J. O, Morgan in Just evening's Globe ublishes his farewell, the financial em rassment of the concern having forced him to lay down the pen, and look for other business. In his farewell he blames the Demecracy for not giving a suflicient support to that paper to enable it to meet its bills, but still, tor all that pro) to cling to the party. It is to {m oped that Mr. Morgan’s next ven- ture may prove more profitable. ugart & Some of the country papers in this vicinity are now trying to help the sup- pression of the confidence business b aragraphs warning visitors to Council lufs to look out for sharpers. It is a poor advertisement for this city, but it can’t be helped unless some of the crooks are caught and punished. They are gen- enally well known to the ofii and they ought to be run in for vagrancy if for nothing else. That charge could be proved on them and they could be made 1o smart, Towa editors seem to be catching it all around, and they ought to form a mutual aid and accident insurance association, Best, of The Harlan Tribune, a brother of the Co)lnoil Blufls news gatherer, thus ates his experience: ‘‘Last Saturda night while we were in conversation wiJ: -Sheriff T- W. One of Baffalo Bill's Cow-Boys Saves a Farmer's Life, Mrs. Dr, Burroughs Thrown from Her Carriage and Badly Injured, There were two exciting runaways yes- torday. One of these was a farm team, near the Union Pacific depot. The horses became frightened by the buffaloes “Wild West” unloaded from a wild and other features of the shew, which was being the cars. The team started on run, and the farmer. tumbling off the wagon, fell upon tho tongue, where he wao hanging and dangling, it seeming every minute that he must fall under the horses fect and be crushed by the wagon. One of the cowboys connected with Buf- falo Bill's company, struck his spurs in The following deeds were filed for re- cord in the recorder's office, October 26, reported for the Bes by P. J. Mc- his pony's flanks and away he flew after the runaway team. Running along side of them he caught vhe horses, and brought them to a standstill, and released the farmer from his perilous condition, BADLY SMASHED UP, Yenterday forenoon, as Mrs, Dr. Bur- roughs was driving down Market street, her horse, who has been used to wearing blinders, but was without them at the time, became frightened by the nmvinfi of the buffalo robe in the carriage, an broke into a run. The horse dashed around the corner, out Broadway, and near the Ohio house the carriage was overturned and Mrs. Dr. Burroughs thrown out, falling with great force on the edge of the sidewalk. She was taken into the Ogden house, where Dr. Mont- omery and Dr. Paulsen were immediately summoned to attend her. It was at first thought that she was very seriously if not fatally injured, but the examination showed that no bones were broken, although she received numerous bruises, some quite severe. The carriage was badly wrecked, its bcd being broken in twoand the smaller parts splintered. The horse alse received some cuta and scratches. Casady & Mats, Orcutt, Rugs and Door o — Dr. West, dentist, 14 Pear] streot. o — RAISING THE TRACK. Should Not the Street Car Company Pay for the Filling? The filling up of Broadway and Main strects raises the question as to who should pay for filling necessary to raise the railway track which runs on both streets. A year ago when a portion of Main street was being raised, the ques- tion was asked, but the street railway company said it was not for them to pay, and the city said it was not its place to pay for it. The amount was taxed up with the rest to the adjacent property. A few property owners protested, and it was finally decided that City Attorney Mayne and the company’s attorney, G. F. Wright, would agree upon a statement of facts to present to the court, and have the question passed The matter has dragged along since then and no agreed case has been submitted. In the meantime the work of filling has gone on, and the expense of filling where the track is has been charged to the adjacent property, amounting probably to$4 or 86 a lot extra. There has been no issue raised in the courts, and no individual seems wi.ling to go to the expense of testing the matter. Now the same ?unntinn arises in regard to Broadway. t ought to be settlod definitely one way or the other. If it belongs to the strect railway company to fill up its own tracks the property owners should certainly not be forced to pay it. The city is talking of paving these streets soon, and it is also important to know whether tho street railway com- pany is to pay for the paving of its track or whether the adjacent property should pay forit. The question ought not to slumber in the pigeon hole, but be brought to the front and decided. Meals at Bochtelo's hotel European plan. on the Boomer; E. P, Cooper, Pleasant; R. E. C—— DRAWING OUT DETATLS, The Full Facts ('nm-vrnlu’u the Kill- Ing of Joe Devore, The coroner's jury, consisting of D, M. Connell, F. W. Fitch and Frank S, Hesse, yesterday afternoon held an in- quest on the body of Joseph Devore, the U. P. brakesman killed Thursday night while coupling cars in the yards here. The deceased living in Omala, the watch and other effects on the body at the time of the fatal accident were taken charge of by the conductor, who took them across the river with him. This has called forth some criticism and comment, and some inquiries were made on this point by the juiy. There scemed no suspicion but that these effects wou'd be safely held subject to the order of the friends, but the simple point secemed to be the technical one as to whether the ef- fects ought not to have been left with the body and taken charge of by the coroner, The inquest also brought out the fact that the use of different couplings by the com- pany was the indirect cause of death, the lack of umformit{ necessitating the de- ceased stopping between the cars to couple them. ’%huru were only two wit- nesses sworn, who testified as follows: Testimony of Chas, Finley—I live in Omaha; 1 was at the U. P. depot at the time of the moving of the U. P. passen- ger cars from the emigrant house to the dummy track. They then brought the main train to the U. They had just co“Eled a car on the emigrant cars; when they coupled the main train on the emigrant car, it broke some of the cars from others; when I got there the cars were about four feet apart and they (the brakemen) were signaling the en- gineer to back up; Joe Devore was hold- ing a link on the head emigrant car; after some delay they moved backward. They could not see the signal of the brakeman, They came back slowly and steadily enough, and when they came to- gether he (Devore) held the link in his right hand up tw the bumper. After they struck they pushed back, and I said “Look out, Joe, they’re coming togeth- er,” and then ho stepped back with one foot, and before he escaped from between the cars they caught him between the platforms, and he said, *“For God’s sake, boys, give the signal to go ahead.” Then it was ten or fifteen seconds before they moved ahead. As soon as they moved ahead he fell on the ground be- side the cars, I went to him and turned him over, he being on his face. The other brakeman, Tom Sully,I think came to him. We then raised him to the platform. I asked him if he was badly hurt. Ho said “‘yes.” After a time wo went for the conductor, and he came, and we then carried him to the baggage car, and then we telegraph- ed for a doctor My business is oiling and repairing cars on the U, I, R. R. It was notin my opinion the fault of the engineer. The train was very heavy. him after he was dead. The conductor did not wish to take it, but the men in sisted on his taking it. One of the coupling is what is called the Miller, the coupling on the other car was the Potter. If both coupling had been the Miller make he would not have been required to have entered botween the cars to make tho coupling.” Charles ‘iuukm-p being sworn, said: “I reside in Omaha. My busines is that of oiler and repairer on the Union Paci road I first saw Devore when he was laid on the platform. T did not hear him speak. Cody is famil- iarly known, Dr. Carver and Captain Bogardus would naturally have drawn one of the largest crowds ever gathered at the driving park. The day was raw and damp, mud abounded, and many who would gladly have gone themaelves [ and taken their families were deterred from doing so. Still the gathering was a large one, and the entertainment prov- ed all that was promised for it, There were pony races bl{ the Indians, the showing ef the wonderful pony express, an exciting attack on a mail coach by a party of redskins, capturing of wild Tex- as steers and wild bisons, the raids of cowboys, and scenes from a grand hunt on theplains. In fact the whole was not only & unique entertainment, unlike any other show in the whole country, but it was also a life like presentation of life and adventure in the wild west, giv- mfi. person a wonderfully true idea of what that life really The wonderful ots made by Capt. Bogardus and Dr. rver seem almost impossidle to be made by human skill, while *Buflalo Bill” himself is no poor shot, though yes- terday he was not at his best.
