One of the most important and unex- sected changes n Omaha business circles SLINGER'S TICKER. How fhe Advertising Man Traded Watches With the Reporter, And O nvinced Him That He Should Treat the Boys All Around. The following waa overheard at the office of The Watchman by our keyhole reporter: “‘And that reminds me—you're speak ing of personal reformation, of something that came under my observation not long ago,” said the temperance editor, as he told the boy with the druggists bill to call next month. “Young Slinger of the reportorial staff had one great fault, he was a habit- ual, and in some instances. an excessive drinker. He was one of the brightest men on the force and was a favoritg with his chief who, either overlooked his short comings or did not see them at all. One afternoon when young Slinger had been pretty thoroughly muddled for three or four days, and was hardly fit for at the reporter's table for a moment, and saw Slinger's watch lying quictly beside tho pastepot, ticking away for dear life, as if bent on putting in much time as possible before it's master’s return, Now this same advertising man was a great joker, 8o he detached his own watch from the guard in a twinkling, laid it on the able and put Slinger's watch in its stead. Ihis done the man of advertisements went down stairs and informed half a dozen of the boys in the oftice of what he had done, and told them to keep quiet and wait fer the cigars, Well, it happened that I was standing in the door, just as 1 am now talking to a friend and saw the whole performance. In about ten minutes Slinger entered the oftice with the tele- graph editor and the day foreman of the newsroom, and, approaching the cashier’s window, asked for an advance of two dol- lars on his weck’s wages. When the cashier turned to look at the cash book to see how much money the applicant had drawn that day, the corresponding clerk gracefully wiped the ink from his gold pen, threw himself back in his chair, and, in answer to the numerous winks and grimaces from the advertising man, turned half way round in his cushioned chair and said: “‘Say, Sling, old man, time?”’ “4Glad you spoke,’ said the advertis- ing man, ‘Slinger has iy watch, and I am going to trade back. The one he gave me was warranted, but it won't rn.’ “What's that!" asked Slinger as he pocketed without examination the two trade dollars the cashier shoved under the wicket. “Why is'nt this the watch you traded me three or four days ago when we were standing on Falconer’s corner waiting for a street car?” said the advertising man as ho sprung the lid of the watch he held in his hand and showed Springers initials. % what's the The astounded reporter shoved his hat |; on the back part of his head, took the ticker from his own pocketand exclaimed: “‘Great guns! I'll be d—— if that ain't my watch and is this is yours! heh?” At this juncture the manager of the city circulation and the night editor en- tered the office, one to get an order for & ton of soft coal and the other to borrow a new two-cent postage stamp and a chew of fine cut tobacco from the book-keeper. Slinger turned the watch over several times and eyed the increasing crowd with dismay. ¢ “Well, I declare,’ he “said finally, ‘I had as good as forgotten the trade und wives to H.
