The Harmony band is making big preparations for a grand ball in St. Jo- seph's academy on Friday evenirg, Octo- ber 5. The boys ought to have a big If the board of trade had a little more life te it and received the support of busi- ness men who now keep aloof from it, it might do wonders for the city in advanc- ing its growth and prosperity. The scarcity of stores and houses for rent in Council Bluffs is one of the best evidences that the city is holding its own while the constant building and enlarging shows that it is more than holding its own. Captain Hight and Jacob Sims, Esq., talked to a goodly sized and enthusiastic CITY COUNCIL. The Report of the Officials for Sep- tember, A Number of Matters Brought Up, Important At the regular meeting of the city council last night all the members were present except Alderman Weod. Bills were allowed to the amount of 83,7 Alderman — about $16 for extra committee work in addition to his regular salary as alder- man, It was the first bill of the kind ever presented in this council, but was allowed, Alderman Siedentopf only vot- ing no, Ihe Council Bluffs Electric Light com pany asked permission to put up poles along the streets on which to string their wires and the petition was referred to the committee with instructions to draw up an ordinance. Judge Aylesworth, of the sugerior court, asked that his salary be paid out of the police tund instead of the general fund by warrant. After considerable discussion the request was denied. D. R, Taylor was granted a license to sell liquor. Lyman & Co. were granted a contract for building a bridge on Bryant street, to be completed by December 1, at a cost of $1,700. The city attorney made a report con- cerning a dispute about the grade of Bluff and Pierce strects, and the mayor and finance committee were instructed to call on Mr. Miller and see if they could not make a settlement. A resolution ordering a sidewalk on y streot was defeated, K. L. Hines was given the centract for building four-foot plank walk at 33 conts per foot. presented a bill of for putting in the stone guttors on Market strect, at $3.46 per yard., The city treasurer’s report showed the general fund overdrawn, $1,831; po- lice tund, cash on hand, £2/160; sewer. age fund on hand, $498; loan fund on hand, $3,7565; total cash in the treasury, £4, 600 he city clerk’s report showed the re- ceipts of the month, from fines, licenses, ete., to be, for the month of September, Alderman James presented an ordi- nance in regard to as street im- provements ingt owners of abutting Republican rally in Washington town ship Saturday night. Mr. Sims speaks in James township this evening, at Oak land Wednesday evening, together with Charles Harle, also Thursday evening at the White school house in Center town- ship. It will be remembered that a young man named Theodore Brown, who lately lived here, and whose parents, very re- spectable people, are still here, was ro- cently arrested and put in_jail at Blair, Neb., for robbery. Yesterday the sherifi was here with the news that he had broken jail, but while hunting for him here received a telegram stating he had been recaptured. Jennie E. Meyers was before Justice Schurz yesterday, charged with the lar- ceny of a ring and a revolver from a col- ored man namel Charles McDonald. The evidence showed that McDonald had been supporting her and was familiar with her, and let her have the property, but kicked when he found that she was in somebody else’s company. She had given him back the property, and was ac- quitted of the charge. The high school was reported closed {elwrdny on_account of there being no uel' Tus BEEsome time ago called at- tention to the dilatory way in which the board had been acting about making any contract for a winter supply, and that no bids had been advertised for though there was talk of making a contract the sly. The board should have ad tised for bids, made its contracts, and provided for a supply long ago. Thé postal notes do not nieet with as much favor among business men as was expected. The complaint is that there little more surety than in sending tional currency in a letter, although it more convenient than sending stamps silver. Now comes the additional trou- ble that postal notes are being raised, the writing being easily altered, and new holes puncl.ufi. the little pieces of round paper coming out of the new holes bein; used to fill up the original ones. Eterna) vigilance seems the price of a postal note. H. Van De Bogart, who is connected with S, T, Walkev & Co., has had his home again darkened by a deep sorrow, similar to that which came down upon it a fow months ago, when their littl' babo sickened and died. The one now claimed l'zrdunth is little Allie, a boy aged about ee and a half years. The little fellow had only been ‘ailing for a fow days, when it was suddenly taken ill with croup Sunday and in a few hours it breathed its last. The funeral services .| down the first one. property, there being some doubt to the validity of the resolution under which the council has been acting. Yesterday was the eventful day on on which the dummy would begin run- ning up Union avenue to Broadway. The pening day was not very auspicious, and revealed nothing of great advantage, so glowingly pictured for the city, by those who urged the city to give up a $40,000 avenue 80 that the Union Pacific could have a side track. The street cars run as usual to the transfer instead of only to the ‘‘depot” on Broad- way which “‘depot’ =~ consists o« platform, where passengers can stand in the storm and rain, and exchange conun- drums as to when or where the dummy will run. Most of thoe passengers took to the street cars yesterday—that is, the wiser ones did, and those who did not gained an experience of “the wonderful advant; " of the Union Paciflc side track, which will cause them to contem- plate another trip with a shudder. With no facilities, no imformation, and no ac- commodations, the whole affair yesterday was as badly mixed and disagreeablo as the mud, through which the traveling public had to wade. Even whon the train does got to run- ning, there seems little prospect of any hourly trips, The company say they have got to lay another track first, If they really meant to lay another track they counld have done it when they put In_arranging the time table, too, there is evidently adisposi- tion to make it convenient for men to live in Omaha and come over here to work, but very inconvenient to live here and work in Omaha. Tue Bek gave due they find the arrangementsarebut slim rec- ompense for giving up $40,000 worth of property, they need not complain. The council rushed through the ordinance, framed in the Union Pacific headquarters, and they, too, should smile, and accept the situation, e Dr. West, dentist, 14 Pear] strect. il PERSONALS, W. R. Brewer started yesterday for his new home in Minneapolis, where he is to continue in the practice law, in company with Captain F. B, Hart, his former part- mer here. He is a young man of rare ability, and his removal is a loss indeed to the Council Bluffs bar, As a member of the board of education he will also be missed Ereatly. While the many friends of Mr, Brewer regret that he has decided to leave Council Bluffs, their best wishes will go with him for continued and fur- r success, as & man of his ability and character merits. E. P. Cadwell, of the law firm of Sims & Cadwell, has pur. chased Mr. Brewer's fine residence, and will preceed to occupy it at once. e — THE DYDES are coming. By an agreement reached by those con- cerned the examination of Dr. Cross, charged with the murder of Dr, McKune, is set for 9 o'clock this morning before Judge Aylesworth. It is probable that only evidence for the state will be - troduced and that no testimony will be at present in behalf u{ the de- fendant. Capt. Hight, Col. Dailey, and N. M. Pusey will appear for the pros- ecution, and Wright & Baldwin for the defense. e—— A. Booth's select oysters roscived daily at W. T.
