Cheap Railroad Tickots at Bushnell's, Everybody goes to Bliss' for fine styles and low prices, THAE DAILY BEE--COUNCIL BLUFFS, MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 |dy, and the tenderncas felt for the wifo from whose side a loving hushand was so ruthlessly torn, thers were some who re membered another home and another whoso burden of sorrow also seemed or than she could bear. Some s in preparing floral tributes for Dr McKune's funoral, suggested that to Mra, Cross the day must be equally trying She had no direct part in the awful trag edy, and yot upon her hoad also came mueh sorrow for the act of her husband, and then, too, her husband's own fate was atill in the balance, and that uncer. tainty, which attimes is worae than death, waa straining overy nerve, and palling apart every fiber of the heart. With these snggeations crowding wpon them, the ladies prepared a beantiful floral de sign and sent it to Mrs, Cross, a touching expression of womanly sympathy toward sufforing woman, o — THE DUDES arc coming. e THE DUMMY, The Unlon Pacific Start Up Unlon The Spiritualists held another of therr socials Saturday evening. No services at the Prosbyterian church yesterday, except Sunday school. City Marshal Jackson is building a ln-getfi\'ory barn on Eleventh streot. In the base ball contest Saturday tho Why Nots beat the Mutes by 16 to 12 Seo the new goods at Bliss', Officer Barhyte arrested o man named . Riley Saturday nightas thedrunkest man e could find. 1t is expected 4hat Dr. Cross will be brought up for examination before Jus- tice Schurz to-day. A political campaign spoeaker withour auy t’i’?lo less than that of *‘Colenel,” would be a start'er. It is understood that Wells Cook has sold his Broadway property to John Hawthorn, who now runs a mill at Love Iand. The funeral of the late Mrs. John 8. Taylor took place yesterday afternoon at her home near the Deaf and Dumb in- stitute. Charles Longmade now wears the sil- ver medal for getting to the front at St. Joseph's Academy during the past two woeks, The Board of Registration will be in session from 9 o'clock this morning until Thursday at b p. m., at E. A, Bocker's oftice, 605 Fist Avenue. Unless some mighty one comes soen to the relief of the editor who howls ‘‘hole in the wall,” he won't even have a hole to crawl into pretty soon. Postmaster Armour has received 30,000 of the new two-cent stamps, and £2,700 worth of the new stamped envelopes, to commence to-day’s sales with. The brick building next to Tur Bre office on Pearl street is being rehtted as a bakery and is soon to be occupied by Fred Rapp, who has beew connectod with the Ogden house. The Sunday hours for the delivery of mail at the postofice are now from 11 o'clock to 12 o'clock, Chicago time, an hour later than before, owing to the late arrival of the morning trains. A number of Council Bluffites, mainly those interested in Spiritualism, went across the river yesterday to hear Mrs, Cora Richmond lecture. She is one of the best in the lend, in her line. . A young man named Lyons, while helping cut a hog in two in a Main street {market yesterday, got a bad gash in one hand, which will disable him for a time from active service. G. A. Holmes spoke at Oakland the other evening, and The Acorn reports: Ho said that the cry of the homes against the saloons was a false cry. Let's soe. Holmes against the saloons. Well it does seem a littlo puradoxical, The Presbyterian church, which has been so long without a pastor, will soon be in usual running order, as Rov. A. K. Bates, who has accepted a call to the pas- torate, expects to soon remove to this city, and will probably enter upon his duties by next Sunday. The new city juil should be put in such condition that it could be used at once, instead of waiting for all the water works connections, etc., to be put just ri The old calaboose is so filthy and so i capable of holding prisoners that it can- not be abandoned too soon. When a hundred electric lights have been subscribed for, then the machinery is to be set up and the business coni- menced in earnest. The number already subscribed for indicates that the day, or rather the night, is not far off when Council Blufls will have the electric light in all its glory. Tt now appears that the trouble with the firo alarm boxes is that thoy wero built for a dry climate, and that the moisture causes them to rustand corrode, The city council ought to provide them with gossamers, or else throw them out altogether and put in some that can bo xelied on, . A back addition, one story, 80x60 feet, is being built at St. Francis’ academy, and is o be used for a laundry, kitchen, buttery, otc., with a baking oven out. side, and a cellar underneath all, In the spring a still greater improvement is to be made by building a three-story addi- tion, 30x80 feet, with mansard roof, It only costs two cents now to mail a letter, and those who have been deferring writing need wait no longer, as the now stamps are put on sale at the postoffice this morning. The new stamp is similar to the old three-cent one, Ln\ing the same vignette of Washington, but in color is a sort of sickly chocolate, instead of green. It is suggested that the wonderful xeverence shown for the Supreme Court by some of the stump speaking attorneys is due to the fact that the practice has not E:i“d them in such contact with that a8 to bring about the familiar- ity which breeds contempt. Hence their horror at the idea of attacking any decis- ion of the Bupreme Court. The laying of the corner stone of the new Masonic temple next Thursday gomises to be & very interesting and imposing affair, All the membors of the fraternity are to meet at Masonic hall at 10 o'clock on the morning of that day, and under command of the Grand Mas ter George B. Van Saun, and escorted by the Knights Templar will march to the site of the new building, where the stone will be laid with due ceremony. Hon T. B. Parvin, of lowa City grand sec: tary, is to deliver the address, and many prowinent visitors from elsewhere have signified their intention to be present. During all of the excitement attending Avenue To-day but Isn't Keeps ing its Pro The Union Pacific having induced the city council to give it Union avenue, about £40,000 worth of property, and having promised in roturn to give the city o dummy train clear up Broadway, proposes to start the tram this morning. A large force of men were at work yes- terday building platforms and putting other finishing touches on, such as the usual accompaniments of a side track. The dummy does not start from this side until 8 o'clock in the morning, an hour later than the citizens expocted, and in- stead of having a train_every thirty min- utes as promised, the Union Pacific pro- woses to run only once an hour. t is said that the council has already begun to weaken in its enthusiasm, and don't see as it is going to be by any means an advantage worthy of a gift of £40,000. The chances aro that it will scem less and loss so as time rolls on, There is already a protost, growing out of the company's failure to keop its promiso to muko half-hourly trips, and the only satisfaction which hus been gainod so far i the assurance that the company cannot run every half hour until another track is laid, and when that other track will be Inid is vory uncertaln. Perhaps, when the Union Pacific gets good ready. The fare is to bo twenty-five cents from the Broadway statien to Omaha, and ten cents to the transfer, that is if o ticket is bought before getting on tho train, but a follew who gets all out of breath running to catch the train, and gotson just in time without a tick ety will bo invited to pay sixty cents for going to Omaha, and forty cents to the trans- fer. If the ticket office on this smde is run as is the one on the other side any- one going at night and returning from Omaha carly in the morning will have a good chance to pay the sixty cents both ways, as the oftice is not open for the sale of tickets, 1t seems that if the Union Paclfic com- pany intended to run every half hour, and needed a double track for that pur: pose, it would have laid both tracks when t laid the one. This uncertain procras- tination, and sromise of something in the sweet by and bye, is very suspicious. Thus far the city has got nothwg tut promises, and not very big ones either, in return for donating a #40,000 avenuo to the Union Pacifiic. The public is therofor a little anxious to see the pro- mises already given fulfilled, bofore put- ting much faith in new ones, ——— Just received from the importers, the latest novelties in Linen and othor styles of Handkerchiefs, will bo displayed to-day at Bliss', e Dr. West, dentist, 14 Pear] strect. | ANOTHER THREATENED OCARV- ING. A Little 1t pus on Main St Which a Knife Shows Up, There was trouble on lower Main street Saturday night, growing out of two men quarrelling about a woman. The details, as far as thoy can be learned before the trial, which will take place to-day, are that a white woman named Jennie Eppor had formerly been living with a colored man named Charles McDonald, They had some trouble and severed their con- nection, McDonald going across to Oma- ha, while she took up with another man named C. T, Klencky. McDonald came over to this side Saturday night and sought to interview the women, claiming that she had some jowelry which belonged to him, ~ She claims that while thus in- terviewing her the rumpus occurnd, and Klencky drew a knife on him and chased him out of the house into the street. Otticer Cusick was called to the scene of the trouble, and as the man and woman kept themselves locked up inside, he held tha. fazt whilo, McDondid wont. up and swore out a warrant, charging Klencky with assault with intent to kill, on Mhicfx he was arrested and lodged i hearing is to be had this x juil. Pentsel and Goorge Blake, reprosenting the Thurston hose team of Omaha, were in the city, arrang- ing for a race betwoen themselves and the Bluff City hose team. The details were all agroed to, and the artieles were to be drawn up and signed yesterday. It is to be a hub and hub race of 300 yards for 8100 n side, and one-half the yato receipts, and is to take place at Omaha next Saturday. The Thurstons recently won the state championship in Nebraska and they are swift omes, but the Couneil Bluffs boys are very confi- dent that they can beat them, and will enter the race with o determination to win without any “ifs.” The probability is that whatever way this race may result another will take place, as the beaten team will hardly be centent to let it rest that way, and if another race is niade, it will doubtless be run on’this side of the river. s clonn J. Those in attendance at the fair and races seem to have gone wild about her, and The Journal of that place thus tips its hat to her: Many have become interested in the plucky little mare which has trotted every day of the fair so far, and has proved herself to be a little faster step- per than anything brought against her. Lorene, owned by Wade Cary, of Coun- cil Bluffs, is b years old, and comes of ood stock, having been sired by Col, West.
