Monday morning the police court was rather devoid of special interest, there being but threo cases, Frank Nowlan, John Colling and Charles Bennett, and they plain drunks. Nowlan claimed that he had come to town to turn the wheel of fortune, and that on returning from the beer garden Sunday night, perfectly wober, of course, he stepped inside the police station to ask where the hotel was that he was to stop at. He was told to stop inside, as it was too late at night for o tender a youth to be out alone. He denied yesterday that he was drunk at all, and thought this was the greenest town he ever struck. He hadlost his way in coming from the beer garden, and knock- ing at the door of a house to make some inquiry, revolver was shoved under his nose with a_peremptory order to *‘git.” He got, and seeing what he supposed was a hotel, went in thero to make inquiry, but found it was a police station, and was thrown in the back room. The ofticers say he had evidently been drinking, and as he did not give a very good account of himself, and was knock- ingat the doors of private houses, they thought the city was safer with him lock- ed up. He was turned loose again. | Collins was a farm hand from near Neola, who having got paid off came to town to make some purchases, most of which was by the glass, and when he woke up he had not enough money left to pay his fine, Bennet was discovered near the new railway track, Union avenue, and at first it was thought he was dead, but his big dog lying_close beside him growled so that the discoverers of the body dared not venture close enough to examine closely. The police were sent for, and by clubbing the dog off they got near enough to find that the man was really dead, but dead drunk. The dog had made some attempts to get his master up, and to get him home, and in se doing had torn his coat badly. and had pulled off one leg of his panta- loons. The dog having _failed to get his waster to move had laid down to guard him, and he howled horribly when clubbed away. C. A. Smith, of Randolph, on his way west, stopped over here long enough to get a linfs full and soon reported to the police that he had been robbed some way or another; he couldn't tell much about it, only he found himself minus $185. The officers, on inquiry, found where he had been wandering, and taking lanterns, after some search found the roll, which he had dropped in some weeds on the vacant lot near Broadway. He was overjoyed at fiudini the money and wanted to set up the beer or the cigars us an expression of his gratitude, but the two officers thought a 86 note wonld be better. He thoueht half that amount was better for him, and_accordingly gave one of the finders 86 to be divided.” The talk about a reward led Smith to tell some sensational stories as to how the police tried to beat him out of §10. e —— Notice. 1 horeby announce myself to the voters of Pottawattamio county as an independ- ent candidate for county surveyor.
