On Wednesday, the 22d, the galo struck the ship, increasing in fury s the day advanced. After dark the storin grew worse, the sea threatening overy moment to swamp the steamer. At 11 | o'clock the storm was at its height and from that hour until daylight the vessel was almost at the mercy of the elements Great seas swept the decks, carryingawa, 130 out of 170 cattlo aboard, and badly injuring a number of the crow. The second officer, Jones, had his collar hone broken. The waves were tremendous in size, sweoping over the ship. They would lift a great portion of the eattle on their crests, hold them for a momont, and then hurl their living contents with awful vio- lence, to death. The next wave would carry off the bleeding and dying in the twinkling of an eye. The schooner Thistle, was dis patehed to the wreck to render asistance, The French bark Kermalo, with 9,000 quintal of codfish from St. Hattre to France, sank with all hands at the on trance of the river Girraud. The rench banker Augusta, just anchored in roads, is severely damaged and lost six men The banker Emile is reported gone down at anchor at Great Banks with all on board.
