New York, August 31 —In their weekly report, R.G. Dun& Co,, of the mercantile agency, say that the business of the country is flowing with a pretty full tide through its customed channels, This is indicated by the steadiness with which figures showing bank exchanges at the chief centres are muintained. With depression in several promiuent branches of trade and only moderate & ) most departments of speculation, it is rather sur- prising than otherwise these figures do mot show a marked decline. The trade of the wook has presented no new features. In dry goods there is moderato uctivity, though prices are very low in consequence of over- productions, cotton and petroleum have all ‘declined mors. or less, but the reductions in values on the whole have not been large. The stock market has continued weak and dull, the expected activity after the recent collapse having apparently been post- poned, though there is reported to be steady buying, for investment, of good securities that 2.0 now very cheap. In speculative circle activity has been wanting, but so far as legi ‘mate trade is concerned the outlook continues 0 be encouruging. smmua bought and old.
