Mr. Armstrong, pastor of the Broadway church, is to occupy the Moth- odist pulpit at Malvern_to-morrow, it be ing quarterly meeting day. The insured should bear this in mind. Yesterday afternoon the funeral of the little child of John Page living near the asylum was held, and attended by a large number of friends. Rev. K‘[ Rogers officiated. Leave to wed wis yesterday given Wm. McClelland and Harsiet Gardner, both of this city. Their united ages are 110 years, and the groom is eight years older than the bride. A committeo of the state board of un- derwriters were quietly closeted at the Ogden house yesterday, discussing the advisability of establishing a supervisor here, as in other large citios, - A hanging basket was ¢ from the porch of a residence on Ban- croft street, Yesterday Detective Edgar recovered the same, but don't scom dis- posed to have the takers prosccuted. 1tly snatched The city council is to meet again Mon- day ovening. Will they conclude to do the graceful thing and ‘rescind the back pay resolution? The next best thing after making a mistake is to correct it. The man Murphy, charged with steal- ing clothing from Forman's store, was to have had an examination yesterday, but owing to the attorneys boing busy olse- where, the case was set for hearing to- day. H. Among those reported is one by Mr, Haywood's in Garner township, another by Cross' place in Lewis township, and othors yet to be heard from. A short time ago Harlan was stirred up by the sudden disappearance of Clos son & Hardie, the proprictors of the ereamery there. Deputy Sheriff Rain bow has found both of them at Miller, Dakota, where they have located quite extensive claims, He brought Closson back with him to Harlan on an informa- tion sworn out by the creamery company, dx.x.,-u.gm...nirf...»,:m..... ey under false pretenses, the claim beind that he secured 8500 the day he left. G. J. Ramsey, an old man, was srrest- od yesterday for cheating, Joseph Babh being his chief accuscr. to bave been pretty full of wlisky for several days, and it wade him feel so rich that he imagined or at least claimed, thut Le bad several cars of yards, and hired Babb to oo and transacted oth inuuginary basis. after them, he case was contin ved till the 18th, and the old man let go on Lis own recogizance, Fred Johnson, who is in the employ of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul at Aspinwall, met with a serious accident the other dey by a runaway. There ey R R s R wheel came off and let them down, while the horses broke into a run. Al five were more or less injured, but Johnson the worst of all. He received two frac- tures of the leg. He has been brought 1o this city for care and treatment, and is at the home of Lis uncle, Theodore Bray, When Hewy Seiffert and his bride were returning to their home in Han- again in full | hame on | Rausey seems ock at the e business on a like cock, having just been married in this city, the engineer of the train began blowing his whistle when within about a mile of that town. and kept it up until the train reached the station, thus noti- fying the citizens of that berg that there was a social event demanding their at- tention, Tt was a decidedly novel way to announce the return home of a bridal party, but it worked well and the friends spoedily gathered to receive them and a happy social occasion followed with pre- sentation of gifts and the serving of a feast, J. M. Phillips, who has had about as much official as well as personal knowl- edge of taxation in this county as any man in it, was greatly amused yosterday on receipt of a paper published in his old home and native town, Rowley, Essex county, Mass,, in which paper was notice of tax sale. The total property on which the taxes were unpaid were two pieces, and the total amount of taxes due was £6.38, hardly enough to pay for the legal notice. Stranger than all else, this was all the back taxes that had accumulated in three years, Folks evidently pay their taxes there, and there is no need of calling attention to the probable di ence between £6.38, the total unpaid taxes of three years, and the amount of unpaid taxes in any one year of any west orn town or village. No wonder Mr. Phillips was amused. e — Fresh oysters, A. Booth's Select, at Braun's European restaurant. — Notes From Neola, Correspondonce of the Bre. Neora, Ia, August 9.—G. It will in the fu- ture be run independent in all thingsand neutral in nothing, It is rumored that a man by the name of Cramer intends to start a democratic paper in this place and run it during the campnign, if suffi- cient inducement is offered by the demo- cratic brethren, We would advise him to profit by what was once said by an ominent journalist, “Go west, young man!” Our criminal court has been very quict for some time. M. GALLIGAN. Council Blufts, July 8, 1883, - —— GOING FOR THE GAMBLERS, A Number of Informations Filed by Marshal Jackson, Tho discussion of the gambling ques- tion, and the relative position of the city marshal and city council in regard to the matter, is crusing some results. Yester- day Marshal Jackson filed infermation against Ben Marks, Wi, Lacey, Bowen & Morrison, Jim Wilson, four houses in all. Just what this will amount it is difficult to say. Ben Marks claims to be out of the business altogether, and that some one else is running his old place. At Lucey's it is claimed that Ed. | Andorson is the one to go for. 1t is barely posiblo that the proprictors of theso places will change s0 often that the mformations will be nothing but boy's play. Thero are already some cases pending against some of these sume parties. The filing of the new in- formations yesterday is but another ter of the same s 1t is not unlikely that out of the multitude of cases the de- fendants may pay one fine in thivty days i Keep running, which will be another and roundabout way back to the old sys- tem of monthly fi , or practical license, and will give the council o chanco to say it is consistent with its resolution and | ive the marshal a chance to say that he out that resolution to the best | of his abili J. Tt appears that Mr, Collimer, who was so unfortunate as to lose his. wife by death, gave the child to a My, and Mrs, Martin, living in the west part of the city, about six weeks ago. The complaint was made by some neighbors that the child was be- ing whipped severely, and otherwiee misused, and the child ng brought in waa found to have numerous bruises upon it, black and blue spots, ete. On the trial of the cass, the defendants claimed that the child's tlesh was very easily nmarked, and that the br were not caused by beating, but by fall- ing down stairs and oii’ the stoop, it hay- ing had several tumbles. The court de- cided that the evidence led him to be- lieve that too much violence had been used against the child, but that there was 1o evidence against Mr. Martin so he was discharged. Mrs. Martin was found guilty and fined Steps are now to be taken to have the child deliv- ered over to other parties, A CLOSE CALL. The Kitchen of Woolsey's lRestaurant Has Its Roof’ Roasted, ; About 6 o'clock last evening smoke was discovered pouring forth from the rear of Woolsey's restaurant on Broadway, and the alarm of fire was quickly turned in. The blaze proved to be between the ceil- ing and roof of the wooden building in the rear, used as a kitchen, and it doubt- less eriginated from some defect in the chimney. The hand and bucket brigade went quickly to work, and by cutting holes in the roof, and dashing water in, the blaze was suppressed without the aid of the steamers, though they were on hand ready for work if needed. o — Spider pins only ten cents at Bliss', C— Real Estate Transfers, The following deeds were filed for re- cord in the county clerk’s office, August 10, reported for the Bee by P. Almost overy man who las lived in the white house, from Washington down to Arthur, has kept his private bottle and enjoyed it. Some of them have been mean and foolish enough to attempt to conceal the fact, but the majority of them have man- fully gratified their tastes without being Imll{ly obtrusive on the one hand or slyly ical on the other. It is to Mr, Arthur’s credit that, like a frank and honest gentloman, he takes his liquor quictly and moderately and pays for it, and that he never countenances such contemptible shame in the name of tem- perance as was committed by Hayes, presi- hypocr | ——— man Students, Pall Mall Gazed The annual return of the number of students of the German universities once more reminds us how far we are behind some of our neighbors in the diffusion of a liberal education.
