Valentine seems destined to control a great trade, to be a center of cattle ship- can ping interests, even if the Sioux City and Pacific should be oxtended soon beyond it. Being the present terminus it is the shipping point for all the ranches one hundred and fifty miles to the west, and covering a large radius north and south of great extent, Thero aresome very large ranches in _that district, and cattle men welcomed gladly a road which would transport their stock so directly to Chi- cago and, to reach which, they could drive their stock ‘all the way o grazing count; Valentine i THE ANNUITY GOODS {and supplies which the Interior depart- Ridge and From the depot here the goods are transported in wagons, the Indians being paid fifty conts a hundred for freighting to Rose- bud and a dollar a hundred to Pine Ridge. It is also the supply depot for Fort Niobrara, situated about four miles east, across the river. It is the county seat of Cherry county, the largest or- ganized county in Nebraska. Its county officers are, A. Sparks, treasurer; A Paxton, clerk; John Key, sheriff; Wood, county judge; D. Y, Mears, John HL Shiare and — Bramheit, commis- sioners; Wesley Tucker, - county attorney. Every train brings new in- mmumu and the country all around is filling up with forcigners. A last word as to the wonderful ELKHORN VALL The land there is everywhere excellent. The climate is delightful: the nights al- ways cool, no matter how warm the days. Water is abundant and _trees grow without any trouble. From Neligh to Blair there is one constant succession of fields of fine, light corn. Above Ne- h farms are not so frequent, and are further from the railroad. But at the present rate of emigration the whole will be settled up soon, and the mammoth counties, states in themselves, will have to be divided. The Elkhorn valley will blossom like a rose. GARNET.
