The Victim of Sunday Night's|® Shooting Dead. The Parties 8till in the Oonoty Jail, Jack Martin, the man who was shot in a row at the B. & M. saloon in South Omaba Sunday night, died at noon yesterday. Coroner Jacobs Sshrote and his wife aud the bar teuder, Bcohreiber, are atill in jall Thelr charge Waa ‘‘atsault with intent to commit marder,” which will now probably be changed toa direct charge cf murder, Thus far it has been very hard to got at any reliable details of the affair but the inquest will no doubt throw light on the affalr. Another party named Tautkins was to be arrested yesterday for com- plloity ia the shooting. THE INQUEST. COoroner Jacobs impauneled a jury at 4 o'clock yesterday atternoon, and held an tcquest en the remains cf the deceased, The jary consisted of Messrs Ed. Rliley, Frank Klefner, G. N. Doty, D. P. Angell, George H. G\g, and W. H. Brackin, eneral Cowin represented the de- fense, and J. J O'Counor, in the ab- sence of Diatrict Attorney Godwin, appeared for the state. Tae witnesses were Charles Urban, Matthew Cunningham, Fred Boyd, Joue Yagers, Offiser Baoklay, Officer Whelan, Csptain O'Donohoe and the two phyalelans, Drs. Darrow and H ff- man, who made the post mortem, Without going into detalls, the tee- timony showed that there was a regu- lar dranken row at the saloon where the shooting ocoarred, in whishspree Schrote paricipated. Mra. Sshrote tock someihivg awsy from Martin (probably his cane), aud he went be- hind the counter and strack herin the mouth end s'so hit her little boy. Then there wes a tussle batween Shrote and Martio, in which the lat- ter fali on top, and Marttn was forcl- bly ejected. After the crowd had dis- persed, Martln wes in front of the saloon on the ridewalk, The lights in tho saloon bad been put out, but were still burning in the store adjscent. Shrote was hoatd to eay: “Shoot him, old woman, ehoot him!” and thrpe shots were fired a fow momentslater. Martin fell on the walk and was picked up a little later and ocarried to & bearding house near by. There ho was lald on the floor, and one of themen who helped to carry him in saw Schrote enter and heard him eay, “How do you feel, Jack,” Martin repited, *“You old s—of ab -, the old woman shot me and you know ft, and if I was up I would shoot you!" The same man saw Mrs. Schrote with a pistol in her hand and Schrote with a beer mug afier the shooting. Schrote offered to bet $5,000 or five cunts that Martin was not shot snd was making out a psper to that effect when the police errived. Another reliable ‘vitnees stated that at the time of the shooting only three persons, Sohrote and his wife and the bartender, were inelde the salcon, He heard three shots, which came out from the saloon. An adjournment of the icquest was taken to 7:30 o'clock, when Drs, Dar. row and Huffman made their report on the post mortem, having failed to find the ball after three hours' soarch, Dr. Darrow had had elght years’, and Dr. Hoffmsn ten years' practice in their profession, and they testified to tubstantlally the same tbing. The cause of the death was a gun shot wound, which entered the body of the deceased about three and one- half inches from the meridian line and two and one-half inches above the idium, passing upward and backward, and thence ob iquely through the bowels. The ball was traced to the emall intestines, which had been piercad in three places, and the inju rles were of a character which would necestarily produce death, The doc- tors had been unable to find the ball, which might have passed out of the body by the natural passages. The bullet was evidently a large one, but 1t could not be found without a dis- section of the body The deceased had made a state- ment to D:. Darrow that the shot was fired by ‘‘the old woman” (Mrs, Schrote) ~ He was under the ivfla’ enoe of liquor when the doctor was called in, There were also thres wounds upon the head—cuts—all of which were through to the bone. Oaptain O'Donohoe testified that he was atused by Schrote, who was fall at the timo, when he went to make the arrest. Schrote pulled hir pletol and told him to look at It and see If any of the chamters were empty. Mras, Sshrote said ‘‘What would apy woman do if she was be- hind the bar and was lusulted in that way. Schrote sald he knew who had fircd the shot but wouldn't glve it away. The jary returned a verdict to the effect that the sald John Martin came to his death from a gun shot wound and the plstol was fired by Mrs, Schrote, but that Schrote was acces— sory to the act. A telegram was recetved yesterday from Martin's father, Mr. George Birker, who stated thst he would leave Chloago for Omaha last night, and requesting that the body be held untll his arrival, which will of course be done, Infants and Children t MMarahine or Nercotine, % eives our Children rosy cheeks, shelr fevers, makes them s "Tia_Cnato Then Pahtea tret, and ery by turns, What cures their colie, kills their worms, But Castoria, What quickly erires Co Sour Stomach, Colds, i But Castorin, Farewell then to Morphine € 14th Bty New Yorks SPECIAL NOTICES.
