NEB WEDNESDAY MORNING MAY 16, 1668 —— 112 e L] //.,,’ slon upon reou. of the board of Inspection, wen destlned for service on . & of Alaska, Lieutenant Jommunder White has been ordered to command her upon the voysge around Oape Horn, Tho board, however, con- demned her unworthy, D. M. Rlordan, of the Navajo In- dlan nqency, demanded that they re- lease all alaves, some 300 In number, and the Indians complied with the demand, The Indian bureau approved of Rlordan's action. The court of olaims has rendered unanimous declslon in the test case of Leopold ve, the Unlted Statee. This salt was brcught nominally for differ- enco of pay, but in fact to determlne the status of cadet englneers who gradoated ot the naval academy In the years 1881 and 1882, The navy department held that they wero under gradastos within the mean- i1z of the not of August last, and were transforred by that act into naval cadets, and thelr pay cat down, and {u consequence of this, they would all have baen compelled to re graduate and wost of them woald then have been dropped under the act as surplus gracnates. Tho court decides they ate not under graduatee, heace they wers not transforwed into naval cadets, bat now remsia in the service a8 cadct englnoers. A large number are interesied in the declslon, Cyclone Notes. Speclal Dis; atchto Tus Brs. 81, Louis, May 15,—The destruc- tion by the cyclone at Macon, Mo., Sunday night, seems to have buen much greater In the country than in theclty. Latestadvices from there say that for fifteen miles southwest of Macon the storm leveled evorything In ita track—farm houses, and in most caser, all outbulldings, A meeting was held at Macon last nigh' to con- sider the coudition of the sufferers aud devise means to ald those In need not have known thelr handwriting. Then it made no diftarence who wrote the heads (the court itself sald Dorsey had a right to doit), so long asthe signatvres were genuine, and that was beyond question. This case should be tried upon the evidence that Gen, Bra- dy had before him,and not that caught in the prosecution’sdrag-net and sifted o sult themselves Wilson, in his address to the jury, referred to the Bismarck Tongue river route as confirmatory of his assertion that a route was not valuable solely in proportion to the amount of receipts at the terminl. The letters passing daily over that route bore a stamp to the smount of $160, yet the balance sheets of the offices on the routes did not ehow the sales of stamps to that amogut, That tended to prove the mutual dependence of the routes. When John Dorsey went out to es- tablish that route he was forced to accept military escort, yet that same section is now settled, even Caster’s battle field has beea cccupied by thrifty emigrante, yet the prosecution would have the jury to believe the service oost too much. Brady refused to dis- contiuae the service and the contrac- tors lost $40,000 or $50,000, Bat that made no difference with the prosecution. If he had let them out; if he had granted thelr request to dls- contivue the service, the go7ernment would have instanced that {n proof of consoiracy. In reality Beady's course in regard to the Bismarck route, was the best proof that there was no con- spiracy. Co-conspirators did not usually force one another to lose mouney. The court adjourned before the con- cluslon of Wilson's addrese. TEA INSPECTORS, Secretary Folger has Informed the preeident that in order to carry inio effect the provisions of the act to pre- vent importation of adulterated or spurlous teas, it will be necessary to appoint asslstant appralsers at Now York, Ohfcago and San Franoisco, who shall perform the duties of speclal tea examiners.
