[ 11 T <« §10.00 per Yoar, Office: No. 7 Pearl Btreet, Near *roadway. 'MINOR MENTION, —8ee Joseph Reiter's spring styles, ~Additional local on seventh page.] The Round Table had an Interesting sosslon {ast night. Dr. Seybert reporta that Mr. Steln- hilber's wounded fiogers are getting along pretty well now. The Reecae May dance last evening at Dohany's was well attendod and proved a happy occasion, B. McAuley Is to appear at Do- hany's to-worrow evening in ‘A Mes- wenger from Jarvis Seotlon,” Oane of Harkness Brothers' show windows {s made very attractive by the presenco of a May Qaeen there, who has a very attractive appearanca. The heavy showers yesterday after- noon put Maln street in anything but ® good conditlon for fast driving, es- pecially where the filling has been made. The engineering corpa of the T., O. & W. rallway, numbering ten, are making headquarters at tho Paclfic, and are at work laylng thelr line slongside of the Calcago, Mllwankee & 8i. Paul. The direotors of the Council Bluffs aud Northern rsilway company have instructed thelr eogineer, Mr. Reln- hart, to proceed with the preliminary survey to Storm Lake, May-day marrisge licenses were yes- terday glven to Loren Peterson and Minnie K. Stelnbrygger, both of Mis- sourl Valley, and to Peter Hendrick- son and Sophia Hanson, both of this clty. The Cathollc mission s still in pro- gress In acoordance with tha pro- gramme announced in Monday's Bee, All the services are being largely at- tended, and much inurut is mani- leated. Patrick White has been bothered s0 much of late by his divorced wife, Mary Sennett, that he yesterday mught rellef of Justice Vaughan by getting out 8 warrant for her arrest as a vagrant, P. Barry was complained cf yester- day by Martin Lowler for assault. There waa little of a serlous natare in connection with the trouble, and Justice Vaughan, on a plea of gallty fined him only one dollar and costs, Constable Fox has jast received the news that his opera nouse in Dakota has been wrecked by & cyclone. Sev- eral of the Swiss cottages erected there for summer resorts by Council Bluffs citizons here suffered a like fate. The cigar and tobacco stock of Councll Blaffs was involoed yesterday in accordance with the re¢quirements to secure the rebate ontax. Each house had its own commlssioner to do the Involcing, and swear to it, the law requiring thav this work shall be done by men who are not in the bus- iness themselves. The silver cup which is to be glven in addition to the purse in the Bluff city cup stake at the coming May meeting of the Driving Park assccla- tlon, is a beauty, and is attracting mauch attentlon and pralse, as it aj pears displayed in Michaels & Danlel's front window, Among the new sults commenced in the dlstrict court Is one in which T. B Fletcher seeks to recover 5,000 damages of H. M. Sarr, under the claln that the latter -llndered him by saying that he stole some hogs from him, The plalntiff has secured the legal services of Lindt & Hart, to prosecute the matter. One of those who has just been re- leased from jail under the poor con- viot act, was yesterday visible on Brondvny in a disgusting state of antl amendment. He seemed to suc- ceed In getting mone{ enough to get dronk on, and was celebrating his re- lease from Unocle Sam's clutches. The coming meeting of the driving park assoclation gives greater and greater promises of belng very success- ful and Interesting. The number of fast flyers already stabled here, the aumber which are on the way, the purses offered, in fact, everything in. dioates that there s much fun ahead. The meeting opens on Taesday the 22d, Mr. McClarg, having bought the lots at the corner of Sixth avenue and Pearl street, began yesterdsy the pre- liminary work for building hls new cracker factory, He commenced mov- ing the house, which has been occa- pled by Mr, Mayes, it belog his In- tention to locate It at the rear of the property and fit it np tor a resldence for himself and family. Frank Johnson, who has been switchman at the transfer tor a long time, untll sickness caused him to take to his home and within & few months to his bed, died yesterday. He was about thirty years of age and leaves a wife and four children, Con- sumption was the cause of death. The faneral services are to be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock and frlends, and eepectally the rallroad men, sre nvited to atterd promptly, and with. out farther notlce, Horace Barhe who has been ar- rested on two charges lodged in Jus- tlce Schurz court, one for larceny and ono for aesanlt and bsttery, A col- ored man named G. L. Clay, who has been at work tor Barhe, made the complaints, avowing that his employer had been steallrg cattle from J. S, Rand, who is his father-ln-law. The hired man clalms that he helped re- brand the cattle, and becauee he told Rand sbout It Barhe pltched on to him acd pounded him, as well as msde dlvers terrible threats as to what he would do if he didn’t keep his mouth shut. The cases are tet for hearlng on the 8th, when the other slde of the story will doubtlees come to the front. New Involoes of Silk and Dress goods just recelved at Harkness Broe, FATALLY ¢RUSHED. A One-Logged Man Loses the Other Leg and His Life. The Result of Stealing a Ride by Hanging on the Trucks, A fatal acoldent occurred In the K C, yards, in the extrems southern portion or the ci'y, yesterday morn- {ng between 5 and 6 o'slock. The In- coming passenger traln, with Bill Eaton as conductor, stopped to regls- ter, and as It started up again, & man was seen orawling out from under the cars, He was not quick enough, and aa the wheels began moving he was caught and ran over. When found he was still allve but waa fearfully orushed just below the thighs, oue leg belog severed, and the other belng only a stomp, the man wearing a wooden leg, was also mangled. He lived about three-quarters of an hoar, and Dr. Hanchett was called, but it was too late, Coroner Faul was noti. fied, and sammoning & jary examined into the case so far as 1t was possible to do, and gathered from the evidence that the man’s name was Peter Moore, and that his home was near Philadel- phis, bt that he came hero from St. Joe. 1. lssupposed that he was steal- fog a ride by hanglog to the trucke under the car,and then when the train stopped in the yard, he thought it a good opportunity to get off, and tried to do so, bnt being a cripple, he conld not crawl out from under the cars qalckly enough. The man was apparently about thirty-five or forty years of age. He was able to talk but little after re- celving the injuries, and before death ensued, and there was little to be learned fro.n the papers found on his person. He was poorly clad, and had with him some awls, need'es, thread, file and sand paper, and it is thought that he was an umbrellas monder, and sought to get a llving while roaming about the country. The jury oon- sisted of L E. Bridenateln, J. O. Gleason, and E T. Ford, and their verdict was in accordance with the above facts, they adding the usual vindloation of the rsilway company, there seeming to be no blame to be attached. The remalns were taken care of by Undertaker Morgan, and dcly hnrled yelterd:y sfternoon, Don't fall to exsmine stock of Car- pets at Harkness Bros.’ before pur- chasing elsewhere They have the largest and choicest volectlon and at prices that aefy competition. myl-3t. Mrs, D. A, Benedict, 337 Broadway, Councll Bluffs, THE CIGARMAKERS. They Stlll Refuse to Work Unless the Bosses Allow the Advance Aeked For, As stated in yesterday's Dk, the clgarmakers of the city here strack for | G an advance, There are not many of them, there belng thirteen in all, but not 8o many who have been at work. In view of the rebate In the tex, the unlon here declded to ask for an ad. vauce of §1 per thousand. This the bosses allowed, but the clgarmakers also wanted §1 more for old or fancy shaped clgars, and §1 In addition for fillers mixed on table. They also clalm all thele wages in cash, The clgarmakers claim that these prices are no more than what s right, and that #0 far as the demand for cash for labor is concerned, that this Is to do awsy with what they call the ‘“‘track” system, Some of them olaim that fnatead of belng pald In oash for their work, they have to take olgara or to board out bills, ete. Taey want to have all cash 80 as to board where they please and buy what they pleaso. Some of the manufacturers here were asked about thelr side of the affair, and they very stoutly claimed that while they were willing to eon: oede the general advance or §1 » thousand, yet they could not stand the ot.hlr demands, They clalmed that the 81 ralse, together with the §1 extra for odd shaped cigare, and $1 dollar extra for fmixed filler, would make a ralse of $3 on many kinds of olg nd this would be all that the rebate would amount to. They did oot think it just for the clgar makers to have all the $3 rebate, and would not mccede to the requost. The shops here are few In number, and none employ very many hands, so that they say they can go right along with what they have al ready made up, and take time to get other men to take the placea of those that strike, In the meantimo thoie who have struck will not suffer greatly as they belong to the union, and by its pro- visions they each draw §4 a week while on a strike, Thelr new scale of prices had to be sent on to the higher authorities of the union, and be voted on. Having been approved, the unlon as o whole {s pledged to stand by this local unfon In its demand. One, at least, of the cigar manufac- turers expects to make bimself what odd shaped cigars he wants, and give the men straight work at the advance of one dollar, thus adjusting the mat- ter 80 as provide for his trade, and others wlll try to arrange matte that they will be satisfactory, some way. In the meantimo there will be no lack of clgars for those who waut to smoke. Yesterday morning the funeral ser- vices of Sliney Sterling, who has been en the police force for the last three years, were held at the family residence, a goodly number of triends belng In attendance to pay mete trib- ute to his memory, and sympathizing with the stricken family and relatives. Rav. Mr. Bresee cflislated, and con- ducted the service very tenderly and appropriately. Officers Clough, Ca- sick, Barhyte, Brooks, Eigar and Morse served as pall bearers, and the remains were followed to the ceme- tery by the mourning ones and a number of sympathizing friends and there lald at rest. *Those who deaden sensation and stupefy the patlent to ro'iave sufferlng make a grave mistake. They proceed upon the falso idea thst it Is legitl- mate to procure relief from pain by destroying physical senstbility, 7This method, carried to the last cxtremity, would kill the patient to end suffering. It 18 not presumed that Lydia E Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound will raise the dead but It cften does re- store those who are given up as hope- leas cases, The Military Dude. No sight that the falr, says Clara B)ll, afforded was more entertalning than that cf the dude in uniform, He was tall and narrow. Hlis belt re- duced his walst to the girth of ashape- ly belle's, and the spreading epaulets broadened his shoulders so that, if I msy be allowed a feminine expreesion, his corsage was given the rad taper. 1 suppose that real soldlers {n war wear cotton on thelr breasts as a protection agalost bullets. I remember reading that General Jackson found cotton bales of utllity in the fortifications at New Ocleans. His bosom was very thickly protected, This was in harmony with the other girlish outliaes of his figure, but of oonna that was merely accldental. In keeping with the rest of him, too, was his bang.
