The Daily Bee. COUNCIL BLUFFS. Tuesdavy Morning, May 1. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: Ay Oarrler, 20 conte per week. B Mall 10,00 por Year, —_——— Office: No. 7 Pearl Btreet, Near rosdway. MINOR MENTION, ~—See Joseph Reiter's spring styles. ~Additional local on seventh page.| ‘With the dawning of May Officers Morse, Tyson and Edgar retire from the police foroe. The Round Table meets this even- ing at the residence of H. W, Tilton, 819 Sixth avenue, Prof. Farnham gives a lecture at the Bloomer school bullding this evening before the Chantanquan clab, his subject belng astronomy, Mrs. Sadle Oaughy has taken steps to procure a divorce from her husband, Finley Caughy, on the ground of hls being too muoh given to drink, Officers Clough, Morse, Barhyte, Edgar, Cusick and Brooks are detalled to attend the faneral of Officer Ster- ling this morning and serve as pall- bearors. The Rescue Hose compsny are to flva & Maypole party to-night at ohany's hall. Prof. Olker's orchestra 1s to furnish the music, and an erjoy- able time Is promised sure. Col, Sapp, who has one of the nicest herds of short horn thoroughbred Dar- hams in this part of the country, has just purchased a fine bull from fl' M. Marty, the consideration belng $200. Theodore Hessell was complained of yesterday for allowing minors to flny pool and hang about his placa. o was brought before Justloe Ab- bott and the case continued to Satur- day next. One of the notlceable features of BSimon Eiseman's elegant new resi- dence Is the excellent workmanship shown in the plumbing and gas-fitting. John R. Martin, who s dolng the work, recelves much pralse and merrits mauch, for it certainly demonstrates that he is an artist in his lne, It's & good | D omd for him, William Brown and his wife, who are complained of for duolhnln‘ to burn & m|fhbor'l house were yester- terday before Justice Vaughn, and the case continued until next Satur- day afternoon. The hea: of the oase promises to bring to the front many detalls of nelghborhood quarrel- ling and bitter feeling. Judge Aylesworth being away Jus. tlce Vaughn was called to the woolsack yesterday morning in police court and disposed of several plaln drunks. Oharles Ovok, Frank Evans and Pea- nut Charlle and Willlam Henderson were each fined $0.60. Not one had funds enough to pay, but Oook and Peanut Charlle gave security, while the other two took to the jail. Harkness Bros., in another column, call attention especially to thelr line of oarpets, and in general to their line of dry goods. As Is pretty well understood by this time, Harkness Bros. are at the front, and they al- ways have a large and varled stock of new goods in their line, with prices which cause thelr trade to steadily inorease. Mr Martin, the gellst, Is to lecture to-night at the Baptist churck, for the benefit of the Home of the Friendless, He has been here sbout » week, and many have had the op- portunity of him speak as an evangelist, aad can judge scmewhat as to what he oan do as a lecturer. The cause s certainly a worthy one, and with the promise of the audience recelving more than than thelr mon- ey’s worth of eutertalnment and in- struction, thereshould be a full house. —_———— COomplete stock of ocornice and ourtaln fixturesat Harkness myl 3¢, les ros,’ If you want a good refrigerator don’t fall to see those nloe ones of Jewett & Son's make, at Cooper & McGoe's, 41 M. Oll and gasoline stcves at Do Val & Wright's. —_—— Grand Musioc. Remeny! was here last night and brought his violin with him, That he is master of that instruament ls hardly the word. He seems to be wedded to it, and in his hands it seems a thing of life Indeed. He charmed and thrilled his audience last night, as he always does, render- dering musio which seemed almost of heaven. Remenyl seems to be able to do an g and everytalng with it, and t{?:ullc which he gets out of it s only equalled by the pranks which he makes it play. He makes a violin laugh and ory, snd in his power over an audionce he Is not ualled by any violinist. He moves ;?l hearers to laughter and to_tears. In fact, he is a wonder. The other members of the com- pany were very good and were duly appreclated. Warner has an oxocellent soprano voice, aud handles it well. Mr. DeCelle, as tenor, and Adolph Bauer, as planlst, also won thelr share of plaudits, and earned them truly. Don't fail to examine stock of Car- pets at Harkness Bros.' before pur- chasing elsewhere. They have the largest and choicest selection and at prices that dely competition. myl 3t A Short Sesselon. The clty council met, or tried to meet, yesterday afternoon afternoon a8 & board of equalization. There were present the mayor, and Aldermen Eicher, Siedentopf, and Wood. Ad- journment was held until this evening, when it is expected business will com- mence in earnest, Lawn mowersat DeVal & Wright's, Dr. Weat, Dentlst, 14 Pearl street. ———— Now fovoloes of Bilk and Dress g00ds just recelved at Harkness Bros.’ WILL THEY KICK? The New Saloon License Lates From To-Day. — Th e new sslocn license of §400 year goor Into effect to-day, but the saloonists will be allowed the rest of the week to file thelr applications and bonds and pay In thelr money. The ordinance fixes the bond at $2,000, and requires at least one quarter's Jloense, $100, In advance. It has been whispered about that seme of the saloon men object so strenuously to the new llcense that they will not take out any, Of course the license Is only for beer, ale and wine, the state Iaw forbldding the sale of whisky. It is Intimated that some of the saloons will outwardly, at least, stop the sale of ale and beer and sell only whisky. Icrqulry of some of the authorities resulted yesterday in Tas Ber recelving the Information that the olty authorities are preparing for such an emergency, and thatfshall it arise, they will commence sharply prosecations under the state law, and that they are confident that those who are Inclined to rebel will efther take out the required license or else shut up thelr shops, 1If there Is any fight made, It promises to be a bitter one, and it will open if ever within ten deys. —_————— Call ~xamine ‘‘the quick meal” gasolir ve, Kormale only by De- Val & Wrighl London Hoclety, On Friday night next there will lecture at Dohany’s opera house the Hon, Wm, J. Armetrong, of New York. Mr. Armstrong has been re- celved throughout the New Eogland states by very large audlences; also in London he has met with brilllant sucvess.
