For some time past this clty has been Infested with a gang of confi- denee operators who have been sharp enough to get in thelr work and gen. erally elude the police officers, 8o successfully did they ply thelr game that the story of thelr operations be- came a sterotyped one and the list of victims was swelled from day to day until it became enormous, Yesterday & haul was made whioh struck home and five men were 1 in jall, who are undoubtedly ot the bottom of the whole business, one of the number having & complete outfit for swindling purposes. The arrests were made by Officers Walker, 8igwart and Boyle and the names of the prisoners were registered as: Rob- ert McCarthy, D. H. White, James Ile, O. H. Childs and J. Adams, alias Reynolds. The gang s of seml-re- spectable appearance and the men mostly young. They were lodged in joll and held to awalt a preliminary hearing before Judge Beneko, Quite nsational ecene accompa- nied the arrest of J. Adams, or Rey- nolds, who was taken In town about 10:30 a. m, by cflicer Walker, Asthe two reached the southwest corner of Fifteenth and Farnam, on their way to the jall, Reynolds suddenly gave the officer the slip and ran at the top of his speed toward the old Withnell house, with Walker in foll pursuit and orying *‘Stop thief.” Reynolds was gaining on him when he reached Har- ney street, and Walker drew his re- volver, but at that moment a young lady, who was walking along the side- walk, got between them and prevented hls firing, The prisoner's break, of course, attracted general attention and a large crowd quickly assembled near the old telegraph office, and many followed the men who were running. Among others was Jack Galligan, ‘‘Old Iron- sides,” of the Western detective agency. Jack is long winded and racticed in ranning from long service Yn the fire department. The pursued and his pursuers disappeared down in the ravine of Fifteenth and Jackson, and the fugitive ran as far as Thir- teenth and Jackeon, where he was brought up against the sewer and tried to throw some papers and other artioles in, but was prevented and his whole kit captured with himself. He was at onoe taken to the city jall and lodged with the rest. The property taken from him at the jall comprised a complete outfit i\ ¢ the confidence business. Alfayer RICE PUDDING The Surprise Party at the Opora House, The fact that Rice’s Surprise Party would play in the opera house last evening was made known to the pub lic for the firat time by the press of yesterday morning, and, although the company had been previously billed for an earller date, the notification of the appearance of last evening must be looked upon as unusually short. Denplto this fact, the audience at the entertainment was one of the largest and most represontative of the season. It seomed to have gathered in ‘wuch the eame way, inexplicable as it is, that mobs do, with the advantage iu its favor that It gathered for amuse- ment and not for destruction, M. Rice's company is not a surprise party. It s, therefore, not appro- priately named. It is not a surprise perty for the roaeon, it is just such aa moat people locked for, is, it is good, better and best in its Individual conatitution, and on the whole ex- cellent, such as nearly all Rlce's ven- tures have been. The company appesred in what somebody, presumably George Fawcet Rowe, calls an Operatlc Comedy Melange, entitled ‘‘Pop.” Just why Mr. Rowe rowed or popped that name upon it nobody cares. Nobody trles to find out, and nobody could 1t he would, The plot and there is a suspicion that there s something to which that name may be applled, unfolds without much effort at unravelling on the part of either actor or auditor, and, at times is rudely cast aside to enable the ladles and gentlemen to slng and dance to their heart's content. The company contains among others the comedians John A. Mackay, George Fortescue, and the comedien- nes Kato Oastleton and Irene Perry and several others of both gender: Of course Mackay and Fortesque are both excellent. And indeed, so are all the rest. There is not an indif- forent actor in the number. The volces are, In the main, good, and those of the ladles, for the most part, are llke their faces fresh and pretty. Miss Castleton was heralded as the bright particular star. But others, even among the ladies, came in for as much appreciation and to their credit be it sald without dolng anything which oaused them subse- quently to sffect the regret oocasioned by modesty when it accidently dis- oloses too much of the lace which adorns the extremities of nether gar- ments., The audience enjoyed the perform- anoe intensely] Hxoited Thousands.
