The Philomathean Concert at Meyer's Hall. An 'Hotertainment Well At- tended and Highly Bpjoyed., Wednesday the Philomathean club held the tecond 5f the third serles of concerts which it has held since its organizition, The hall in the second story of Max Meyer & Co.’s musical Ware-rooms was abcut two thirds fi led with the most fatelligent class of the city's pcpalation, The programmo comprehended efght num- bers, all of which were ¢f the most difficnlt of ivstramental and voeal selections in both oconcert and solo plecen. 'I'ne coucert was rather more than usually interesting in its charac. ter, particularly in view of the fact that Peofessor Felix Blavkenfeld appeared before an Omaha audience for the first time after an absence of over four years. Tae professor {3 well and fav. orably kuown as a skiliful planist, and a8 & person who thoroughly under- stands music in all its branches, Tae first number, astring quartette in G, by Hayden, was exceedingly weil done, and eliclted a merited applanse from the audience. In the second namber, a trio in K oo, 14 No. 2, by Mczart, Mr. Blankenfeld made his sppearance before the audience and was greeted by a storm of applause. This selection, while beiog classic, still has a thread of harmonious airs which being in the manner of jinglirg and every day mu- # ¢, caught the ears of the ignorant as well as the cltured masieal persons in the hall. Taie professor acqult ed himaself in & nighly satistactory man. ner, his manipuiation of the key- board being slmply heyond criticlem. The serenade, by Schubert, render- ed by a quartette from the Gee Olub, was woil recelved. The gentlemen were all In exccllent voloe and the enunciation as well as the vocallsm, was good. All in all the en- tertalnment waa satisfactory, not only tothose who listenad to It but alsotothe management., The efforts of Mr. Julius Meyer in making these concerts a leading feature in Omaha entertain. ments shows acommendable spirit and regard for the pleasant side of life on his part, and he cannot be too highly praised for it. It is probable that through his indefatigable effirts the Philomuthean concerts have reached their present standard. The next regular concert will be glven darivg the early part of May, aud is eure to be looked forwarl to as the even: of more than ordinary pleasure. PERSONAL. H. D. Lake, H. H. A Notable Event and One Long to bs Remembered by the People of Omaha, Never before in the history of Omaha was a spring opening 8o largely attended as thatof S8 P, Morse & Co., the popular and well knowa dry goods merchante., Although the evening was chilly and threatened raln, it appears but few ladles were deterred by the weather, for upwards of 3,000 visited the store, many accompaunfed by gentlemen From half past 6 until 10 the store was thronged, and at 8 o'clock there was such & cruth that no one could move through the spacious double store. No one was dissppolated though all were agreeably surprised as the vast throng did not expect an exhibitin on so grand a scale, although the reputation of this enterprising firm ior keeping the largest and best select- ed stock cf dry goods west of has been established for y their grand openings at varlous sea- sonr of the year have always been un- surpassed. But the affair last evening eclipsed anything previous, as their purchase in this and foreign countries has been larger this season than the addltion of several artists in the dif- ferent departments helped to render their opening to be one of the most unlque and artistic exhibitions of dry goods and notions our faber has ever been called on to describe. Owing to the want of space and time it is im- poesible to go into details as it would take half a page of the BEk to do the subject justice, e NAILED AT LAMT.
