THE OPERA. The McOaul Company at Boyd's Opera House. A Beautaful and Suce:sful Pre. sentation. The cartain at the Boyd, last even: ing, as It rose upon the first act of ““The Qaeen's Lace Handkerchief,” disclosed a beautifal drop with not less beautifal and pleasing setting, It recelved the hearty appreciation of the sudlence and put it In a cheerful and amiable mood In which to admire the plotureequely attired as they came tripping lightly upon the stage. ‘‘The Queen's Lace Handkerchtef, which, by the way, ia the second of Johann Strauss’ compositions which have been presented here this season, is not by any means the least remark- able of his productions, Indeed, it deservedly ranks among the saccess- ful of the light comic operas to which we have listened. The music s of the light tripping, which, from the earlieat passages, even those of the orchestral overture set tho auditors en rapport with the work. While gratefol to ears which have be- come accustomed to the strains of ‘Plnafore,” it nevertheless displays in its composition the intellectuality for which one looks In vain in works of the kind montioned. Nor Is the plot one which the average will not follow with Increasing interest. Simple though it be, and capable of being anticipated long before it is finally unravelled, it is prettily de- vised andjworked out with concomitant and artlstic skill, It is untrammelled by a tedious alr, the arcas, duos, trios and oconcerted pleces deservedly ap- peal to the sppreciation of the audl- As a whole, the company advertised any, under the management of Mr. averly, which -presented the plece which predecessors have this season l;:eldy ullhmbtd ; that in nearly all the | W; e route for burial st his home at Wa. | 5, Te0EY persons were confirmed on | SCOFIGS tExe wae ever presgnt, es- peolally in the forte passages, a voloe rhaps volces, to which antiquity Tha first act, partioularly from after the retirement of the chorus until the erouping in the finale, dragged, matn. ly because the audlence had looked for greater excellence In some of the princlpals, than it found them to pos- & coneequence, the coldness almost depressing. The samo night be of Miss Oottrelly, both of whom, however, are beautiful Iadles and exoellent actresser. The comedy of the production was in the hands, or, to be more cor- reot anatomlcally spesking, in the limbs, body, shoulders, neck and head of Mr. Francis Wilson, The aseist- anoce this gentleman recelved from the subordinates, while in itself satisfac. ‘ory, did not detract from the most pronounced faot that he was the comio life of the piece. His every look, move, his almost every word, roduced the happiest feeling, evok- ng moat cordlal evidence of apprecla- tlor. A demonatrative proof of the latter was the gentleman’s recall to | pra the stage during the progress of a soene, Of the dressing of the peace, noth- ing bu* praise may be said. The cos- tumes were changea ahalf dozon times on nearly all the principals and the chorus. They were atonce appropriate, rich and beautiful, and, displayed in the lighe of the calcium, they shone with helghtened ¢ ffeot.
