THE STAR ROUTE TRIAL. Special Dispatch to Tun Eun. DAY OF DEBATE, WasHINGT N, March 19.—The jury was excusod for a day and argument on the admiasion of portions of Brady's evidence continued. Merrick’ sald Brady had stigmatized all of Walsh’s testimony as false, as ‘‘a lie made out of whole cloth.,” On his cross exam- inatlon the government proposed to interrogate him relative to facts aworn to by Walsh. Brady came upon the stand and declared he had acted (in matters insrease and expedition) from pura patriotic motives; he brought his motives in the case, but he would find that what he thought was solid rock was but quicksand beneath his feet, for it was for the government to re- but his testimony on that point. ‘‘He put his motives forward,” said Mer. rick, ‘and I now propose by the magic rod of truth to dissolve and disclose his propose.” Ingersoll made the clozing argu- ment, He said it was pot matertal in this case what Brady's motives In making expedition were in any other oase; it was not necessary to intro- duoe several other cases to prove Gan, Brady knew it was wrong to swindle the government. No matter if he had stolen in those cases, the presumption was he was innocent of the charge on trial. Ingersoll commented upon the length of trial, that it might run into ars, The court sald the twelve candles still burned. The question was whether the court conld recelve evidence of payments to Brady by other contractors; whether his acts could nct on thelr face be shown to be criminal acts by the light thrown upon his motives in other transactions, On this point the court reserved decision, Ingersoll satld he would continne the argument to-morrow.
