— THE DAILY BEE-COUNCIL BLUFFS {0WA FRIDAY MARCH 2 The Daily Bee COUNCIL BLUFFS. Fridav Morning, March 2, Office: No. 7 Pearl Btreet, Near roadway. Bome one always in the office, MINOR MENTIONS, —8ee Joseph Relter's spring styles. —Mr, D. N, Heister, who has been ill Iately, we are glad to hear is much better wow, —~Weighmaster Honn was showing us yosterday the method of testing scales with the United States government test, Tt works like a charm, —An honest fellow on a load of corn in- formed us that the roads were so bad that it took three horses to haul in twenty.five bushels, Thirty-eight cents was what he got for it, —Edward Smith, of Elliot, Montgom- ery county, and Flora K. Bauer, of Gris- wold, Oaes county, revistered in the mar- riage license book at the court house yes- terday. —BState Treasurer Conger has given no- tice that all outstanding state warrants to number 4,700 will be paid on presentation, No interest will be allowed on the said ‘warrants after March 31, 1883, —Aldermen Eicher and Woods left for Towa City this morning to attend the state road meeting to be held there to-day and to-morrow, Street Commissioner Avery proceeded there a day or two ago, —We understand from Mr. Rose, of The United States Monthly, that every town along the Missouri will be vikited in the interest of that journal before January 1at, and a circulation of 100,000 copies will be reached, —Hon. W, H. Davir, formerly a law- yer of this city, of the firm of Mynster, Balter & Davis, is in London, Evg,, from whence he sends copies of The Daily News, Charles Dicken«’ old paper, to his friend, W. R, Vaughan. The old friends of Mr, Dayis will be pleased to know that he has “‘made a stake” in Texas building railroads, —Who is “‘Col, Pusenbury?” A man is out in a card in The Globe claiming to be the individual, A lion’s skin would not cover up that ass. The ears are bound to protrude. If we had not drawn his por- tralt correctly, why did he recognize it so promptly? Where is the cloth peddler with the thief dodge? Has he more sense than the swindling au ctioneer? If not, it is in order for The Globe to publish his card, Yesterday we had a very pleasant call from Hon, W. H, Morris, of Crete, Neb,, snd wife., Sixteen years ago Mr. Morris landed here in the Bluffe, from whence he went to Omaha, and later to Crete, He relatos tome incidents of life here at that time, Wooden shanties then stood where are now some of the proudest structures in the city, and instead of town clock a wigantic mule used to stand on the hill and ‘wake up the sleepy Bluffers with his na- tive song, Mr, C, W, Rose, of the U. 8, Monthly company, avd an old friend of Mr, Plerce, of Tun Bxs, called on us yesterdsy. He is canvassing the ocounty in the interest of his ‘magasine, A. H, Livingston, of Missouri Valley, took In the G. A. R, Wednesday evening, and dropped into THx Bxm office next morning and subscribed for the daily. A party ot Neola people at the Ogden include H. MMendel, H. J. While there may have been, and in fact there were, some creditable performances, notably the cornet playing and some of the singing, yet on the whole it was not a ‘suocess. ‘We hope we can go to hear atroupe before longin Council Bluffs that is not just on the border land of varlety, and does not drag inall the gobwebbed negro minstrel jokes and Tully of an- uity. “qfluzl there are people in this city vl»vll{p to hear somethlng of & different nature, and why not bring such troops here! A mere farcloal plece of buffonery may, as the prince drams says, ‘‘pat on ‘:om q:-n'l:t{ P " bl who wants to hearit! Let -hnnm. THE CAMPFIRE. What the Boys Did at Bloom & Nix- on's Hall. By half-past eight Rloom & Nixon's hall was pretty well filled with the ancient veterans, their wives and fam- ilies, and the hilarity of the eveniny was Inaugurated. By speclal invitatlon a very re- spectable squad, we mean in quality as well as number, was present from the post at Missourl Valley, where, a short time since, a delegation from this clty were so royally enter- tained. In connectlon with this subject we were Informed by old members of the G. A. R. that usually their assem biles were open to all, but that they reserved the inher- ent right of glving select parties when they chose. This last party was one of thelr select ones and, eo sald the boys, there was no ground for the dissatisfactlon reported by contemporary, and farther, that the said dissatisfaction was In their opln- ion somewhat apocryphal. Com- mander Lindt called the meeting to order and summoned Comrades Sapp, Daily and Plerce, of this oity, and Arndt, of Missourl Valley, to come forward, sit on the platform and be gazed at, Comrade Arndt led off In mn en- thusiastio addre hort, sharp, and pithy; Col. Sapp followed in his hap plest vein of oratory; Plerce of Tak Bk kept the ball rolling with his ac- customed force, and Comrade Daily gave the finishing volley. Maalc by Prof. Davis was interspersed betwecn the forensic efforts, Then the dancing commenced, and a gsy Terpeichorean feast waa gone through. The old vet- erafia showed that their feot had nt been entirely used up in the marches down south, Whlle the wives and daughter were as the nymphs of Diana 20UAYE DRILL was gone through with in not quite so good style as when the rebel flag atil waned at Richmond. Skirmishing was next, and a clearanoce of the lobby by a charge at the polint of the bayonet was the thrilling event of the evening, Up In the gallery the ARMY BEAN was being devoured ad libitum, and coffee so strong that Hercules would have found it hard to tackle was fuor- nished Te Bke local who strajed up there. We told the walter, after trying it, that we thought we had grounds for complaint against the G. A, R., and came near belng dram-head court- martialed fer it. A glant Bolegna was rigged up on wheels, made from a couple of taruips, in the centre of the table. It was lnfi;unhly “Whistlig Dick” or “‘Lady Davls,” and the sorties, skirm- ishes and battle that tock place over that ptace of artillery were as exciting a8 _}:ou in the field, o LADIES, GOD BLESS 'EM, were untiring at the table, and on the waxed floor. And the dreary march, the weary hospital, and even the loathsome prison pen, we fancy many & soldier shought, were not suffered in vain for the comforts of home agaln, and the joy of having dear faces once more around him, —_————— Notioe, I expected to hold a mass meeting of the people In the Interest of an | Larcen: ‘“4mprovement tloket,” on Thursday night, bat it is gmlpnnod to Baturday night, March 3d. The following is the platform form- lated by the Central Trades assembly, upon which they lntend to enter the aldermanic contest, We underatand that it has been adopted by that body and endorsed by the trades union or. ganizations: To reform the existing evils of our olty government, we, workingmen of the city of Council Bluffs, pledge to the people the following measures: 1. The strict enforcement of all ex- Isting laws and ordinances for the pro- tection of life and property. 2. The purification of the police and other departmenta of the city govern- ment that lawlessness and vice may be exterminated and punished. 3. The abolition of the contract ays tem on clty improvemeuts: 4 Fall accountability of all pablic servants for faithfal performance of dutler, 6 Improvementa In tho strects and avenucs as speedily as ths revennes will allow, at the cxpente of the city. 6 Sufticlent compensation to publi servants, and all foes of office deposit ed to the city’s credit. 7. A license law for the regulation of the traffic in Jiquor of not less than $800 per annum The above atatement of princlples we submitted to a great number of both parties about the city yesterday with & view of gotting general expres— elons of oplnion apon it. Most of those spoken to thought the platform *all right;" in fact but one man with whom we talked was out and out sgainst it, Nearly every one, how- evor, waa anxious about the ticket to bo put upon the platfors “What kina of men wiil the labor ing mon put up?”’ was the commonest query. The refusal of Shagart to ran, as announced in yesterday's Beg, created some wonder as to what woald be done in the matter. Mr. Baird, chairman of the republican city central commis- tee, upon befig asked what was to be done, answered that the central com mittee would hold a wmeeting, and if neccessary auoiber cazcuns would be called. ““What do you think of that plat- form?”’ we asked, holding it out to him, ““Well,” said he after reading it, I don’t belong to their crowd. The platform appears to be all correct.” Mr. Tulleys, of Burnham & Tulleys hearti'y approved the movement, Justioe Schurz gave usa breezy ar- guwent on the principle of high li- cense, claiming that it was a cruesde againat the poor man and that the rich saloons were really more dangerous than the others.
